Today was Byrnes' first game apart from a stint in one of the practice matches and he was a bit rusty although he did kick a goal. His contribution is more from the assistant coaching angle although you can see he does talk it up a bit on the ground as part of that role.

It's a long way back to Cranbourne now so I will try to get my report in tomorrow.

Sounds like Riley just played himself back into the seniors and maybe Matt Jones as well.

Does anyone know if Billy the kid played or was he 23rd man for the seniors and required to wait until the AFL games started?

Riley was very hard at it. Head butted an essendon blokes knee in a contest at one point but won it and came out unscathed. Stretch didn't play. Harmes played well up until early in the 3rd where he copped a cork to the knee/lower quad. Didn't play much further after that.

I assume also that Fitzy played the whole game down back and it's very encouraging that it sounds like he is showing good signs there.

But when three of our best six were TMc, Garland and Dunn, it is almost impossible to make a case for including him this week to play on Tippett - would you agree demonkey?

Was his kicking OK or still a bit of a liability?

He took some good marks but appears to lack a lot of confidence when it comes to getting rid of the ball. He was good but needs to back himself more. Did some very nice things but also made a couple of simple errors.

Did the Toump play in the second half??

15 touches to half time; didn't break 20 at full time...

Good to see the top 4 Casey players all MFC listed. Not so good that none are Toumpas.

He often runs out of puff in the second half. Or some strange phenomenon where the game opens up and he stops finding space The alternative is the bombers put someone on him to shut him down.

The biggest concern is he can have 15 to half time and not made any significant impact on the game with them.

And you know that because you were there MoFo?

good to see Casey beat a legit AFL seconds side

Gawn must get a promotion soon surely, he has too much size and talent to be playing at VFL level, he must be given an extended run for the MFC

Good to hear ANB doing well

For me Gawn can only play as the main man in the ruck, he's never going to be a key forward or forward/ruck. If his tank is not up to it then he would be a liability for us.

I think Spencer holding down the 1st ruck spot at Casey may well be detrimental to Gawn's development.

My biggest surprise reading this report was that Bail played. If he was fit enough to play for Casey, how did McKenzie get called up to the seniors before him? (Not that I think Bail is a long-term prospect for the seniors. I just have him well ahead of McKenzie).

I get the feeling ANB will make it into the firsts before Toumpas or Stretch do.

I think he and Stretch will both play this season at some point...

Good question. And Bail at least would make a legitimate substitute - McKenzie is a close tagger at best and nothing else.

SCORPIONS LEAP by KC from Casey

The Casey Scorpions leapt into second place on the VFL ladder after a resounding 33 point victory away from home against the Essendon VFL team.

The Scorpions list was tested with the mounting number of injuries at Melbourne and for the first time this season they fielded a majority of VFL listed players after Cam Pedersen was withdrawn for AFL duties. Youngster Billy Stretch, who has impressed in his two games so far, also did not play. Into the team came Oscar McDonald and Alex Neal-Bullen for their first senior VFL games along with senior Casey men in assistant coach Shannon Byrnes and Will Petropoulos returning from a long stint off through injury.

Kicking to the scoring end aided by a slight breeze, Casey attacked early with rookie James Harmes kicking two goals but the Bombers pulled back and it took two late goals to give the visitors the ascendency at the first break.

The second quarter was a tight defensive struggle with skipper Evan Panozza and beanpole Jack Fitzpatrick holding the home side back on numerous occasions and but for some skill errors on the rebound, Casey could have been further in front than a mere 5 points at half time.

With the breeze stiffening, the Scorpions put in a magnificent third quarter kicking 7 goals 5 behinds to 2 points to effectively ice the game. Midfielders Aidan Riley, Matt Jones, Rohan Bail and Mitch Gent were in total control with the support of Jake Spencer in the ruck giving the forwards, most notably Max Gawn and 23rd player Paul Pattinson multiple goal opportunities. The game was never in doubt but the visitors dropped down a gear in the latter part of the game to still run out convincing winners by 33 points.

As for the two debutants to Casey senior ranks, Neal-Bullen was impressive with his hard at it style of play picking up 21 touches and effecting 8 tackles while McDonald put in a handy first up performance. Harmes was subdued after his early burst and managed only none disposals for the day.

The Scorpions take on old rival Sandringham at Casey Fields in next Saturday's telecast match. The game starts at noon.

Just watched the 1st half. I would have to say out of all the MFC players Toumpas was best on ground for me so far. He used his pace and broke the lines, something we have rarely seen from him. His kicking was exceptional as well. About to watch the 2nd half.

Riley: Tough bugger! puts his head over the ball and wins the hard contested footy.

ANB: First glimpse and thought he was actually quite impressive. Another inside midfielder that will just get better and better as each game goes by. Needs to tidy up on his kicking but 2st game in the ones will do that to you.

Fitzy: A gun backman at this level. If he could now make the step up and bring this sort of effort into AFL level we could have a surprise packet here.

Terlich: Got his pants pulled down by Hardingham.. Long way back I would have thought.,

Jones: Wins the ball but his disposal by foot is just what lets him down unfortunately..

Gawn: Took some great marks in the last line of defence in the 2nd qtr.

Spencer: He is seriously a monster of a bloke. I have been a big critic of him but I wouldn't be against giving him a fair go in the ruck at AFL level.. I think he is next in line after Jamar and we need to seriously consider giving him some games to see if he has what it takes. Looks more nimble this year.

White: Quite half so far. hopefully I see a bit more in the 2nd half.

OMAC: A development year for McDonald. You would rather the ball in his hands then his Brother lol. Has a great kick on him.

Bail: Just another battler for me to be honest. Didn't impress me at all.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
