On PRE a bloke called wayne stated that Vince should tag the umps because they have been damaging... made me laugh. That said apart from the reversal of the free in the goal square, I am prepared to live with the umps hating us and not winning the free kick stat, I like the hardness and they are bound to get it a little wrong, but it's worth it. And while I think Hawks will belt us, I reckon we're going to hit them with everything and I'm looking forward to it.

Bad call. We were 24 to 12 against at one point. And by my count they got 3 goals. Infuriating. And what about when Vlastuin took out JKHs legs in the goals square and got no free? Its not just the bad ones they pay. Its the bad ones they miss.

They got 8 FKs per quarter. Many were BS. Particularly the ruck ones.

Should have been a 10 goal win. Not that any of us are complaining of course. We smashed them to bits.

Any thoughts on Dom Tysons game. Thought he fumbled a lot and made poor disposal choices But still got plenty of the ball!

Seeing it live thought he struggled, he did get caught a few times. Watching the replay he did still get plenty of it and put the ball into fwd 50 a few times so he balances out the good and bad I thought. He and in general I think all players are taking the game on which when you can get away looks great but if you get caught looks like you are doing the wrong things.

There was one play where Dom took it straight out of the middle and sent it long inside 50. I think it ended in a JKH goal. He has definitely started the season slowly but that's not a bad thing, just shows we've got others in the midfield who are stepping up. He will find some form as the season goes on.

Dom looks like he is labouring. He had been playing lower minutes in the first 3 rounds. He spent a lot of the last quarter at half forward. He seems one step off with his disposal. If he clicks into gear it will make a massive difference.

Jonesy was miked up and they ran a small highlight's package of his leadership on the ground - the guy's amazing and inspirational.

Spoke about the mental state of the players (this is for you, SWYL) and he coped with the situation by digging in further, but he admitted that he wasn't 'giving enough of his time to help...'

Was asked the perennial JW question and he responded by saying internally, everyone's backing him every week.

In his 3rd B and F speech, he publically thanked the coach for challenging him even further and cited Christian Petracca as the most exciting coming through. Loved Jesse, Salem, Brayshaw and Vanders. Spoke about the 'intensity' and how much 'they wanted it' (players mentioned)

But I thought he had more of an impact at the stoppages and I think he worked himself into the game a bit more.

Lots of work still to do though.

No1. He is getting the ball

No 2. He is trying to take the game on

Yes he is getting caught a bit but it is the nature of where he plays. Its hot in the clinches and he will improve. Still young. Still learning. Huge upside to him. You want him to be taking the game on. Most of the best mids do that. They don't immediately dish off a handball.

When he got the ball instinctively prepared to give off but had no option or option was in a worse position than himself. Went looking for second or third option and couldnt find one or was tackled while in the process so it didnt come off.

As the confidence improves with the group and they provide better support both options and shepherding his outcomes will be better

My point was that even on PRE they thought the umpiring was woeful and biased in their favour. I'm saying I like how we are a harder team.

Exactly - the problem wasn't necessarily the decision making of the umpires when awarding frees to the Tigers (although some were baffling) it's that there were different standards applied to us and them. Howe gives away a free to Griffiths for holding leading to a goal, tiggy touchwood free but if you're going to pay it fine - then down the other end Hogan getting molested by Rance yet no free? Also the too high/HTB 50/50's ALL went their way. Then you've got the baffling decisions like the marking infringement against Salem and the chopping the arms against Jamar when they both barely touched their opponents.

It was the inconsistency between the umpiring the two sides got which stunk, I won't hold my breath expecting Wayne Campbell or Mark Evans to do anything about it though.

I felt watching the game live that Jones made a lot of mistakes and he did, but having watched the replay twice now, gee he was good.

Col Garland is also very underrated. Thought his performance was very solid. Didn't feel we played that well to be honest. Our tackling in the second half was excellent, but our decision making at times was deplorable. That's the positive for me. Still lots of room for improvement. Was very happy with the win.

I'm sick of hearing anyone that is beaten by Melbourne as being insipid. We're playing solid team football these days. Not always consistent, but when we're on top, we can break away. The media continually patronises us, but I guess that'll happen when you've been insipid for close to a decade.

Yep. There's still a lot of room for improvement in our midfield. Jones, Vince and Tyson could all play a lot better. Newton is a new favourite of mine. He's so well balanced. He's a quicker Tyson and he hits the scoreboard. We're building a goalkicking midfield, which is what we obviously must do.

One other thing I'm loving about the season so far is our first quarters.

We're the only club in the competition to have been leading at quarter time in all four games so far.

We'd be doing mighty well to make it 5/5 next week.

I noticed that Tyson slid his knee in to the goal post when trying to smother and maybe that was the reason for him being moved to the forward 50 in the last quarter.

It drives me up the wall that the media still talk about our wins in terms of our opponents playing badly and missing an opportunity. Richo on the Saturday night pre-game show was a classic example. All of his comments were about Richmond, not one mention of the fact that Melbourne were harder, tougher and played better.

Probably the same muppets defending Watts.

Kent, Vandenberg, Brayshaw, TMac, Salem, Hulk, Viney (when fit and in) led admirably by the Jones Boy. All starting to become consistant contributors and never shirking a contest (*referring to the newer boys not the Captain).

Most in the team are taking their game to a new level physically this year.

Roos needs to make a hard call on Watts, and quickly, as he just isn't going with them here and becoming a substantial liability. We are effectively one man down in a physical contest sense when he is in the team.

Pedo is an instant in for Watts IMO. Not the greatest footballer but at least you know you will get a contest and no squibbing. I like Watts as a person, top genuine bloke off the field, and a highly skillfull ball user on the field, when he does get it. But mentally he has now proven many times he isn't up to the physicalities of this sport. It's time to give others a chance at proving they have what it takes at this level.

I'm obviously one of those 'muppets'.

And I'm very happy to put my hand up as a big Watts' supporter.

Let's see who's the muppet at the end of the season.

That wasn't a great play though. Bombing it long to JKH is very low percentage when he had vandenBerg streaming through the midfield inside him for a handball that could've then seen a pass or running shot from 50.

The best bits of Tyson's game where the quality clearances he won in the 3rd quarter when pushed up to a stoppage as a high half forward. The way we broke from the clearances with sold enough (given the wet) ball use and getting it to advantage as the ball went forward was much different to the way the Tigers were under constant pressure and going forward without any fluency (Shane Edwards aside)
