Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Changes for Round 3

Recommended Posts

I'm going to go with the following team for round 3:

B: Jetta McDonald Frost

HB: Salem Dunn Howe

C: Lumumba Jones Vince

HF: JKH Hogan Viney

F: Garlett Dawes Watts

R: Jamar Tyson Michie

Int: Vandenberg Newton Brayshaw

Sub: Kent

Outs: Cross, Garland

Ins: Michie, JKH

- Jamar should ruck 85% and then we can use Frost for the rest and move Watts back while he is rucking

- We need more mids so this gets us one extra runner (we will not get close to Adelaide without having a long list of mids)

- Crossy has been a great player but I think Michie can do his job better now- He's great for depth though for this season

Would we consider bringing in Grimes to tag Danger? Could follow him around the ground then defend when he goes up forward too.

This will allow Viney to play a more attacking role which I think we need.

Would also give Brayshaw more time on the ball. We desperately need to keep developing our midfield and there is no doubt that unless we break even in the clearances on Saturday we will lose by 10+ goals.

10 days ago Roos suggested that he just wanted to see Grimes enjoying his football again. I'm not sure a re-introduction to the big stage on Patrick Dangerfield would be much fun. But like you, I think he's up for it. Grimes has the character to come back a better player.

I think that's the sort of thing Grimes would actually really enjoy.

It's a single minded task, which if performed well, will go a long way to helping us win.

The reality is that Grimes will struggle to fit back into the defensive 6 pending injury or horrible drop in form.

He doesn't replace the 3 talls, so is competing with Salem/Jetta/Lamumba all of which are better than him either offensive or defensive or both.

This means if he's to get himself back into our best 22 it has to be in a different role. Is he good enough to be a straight up midfielder? I don't think so, but I think he has what it takes to be a good tagger. He has good endurance, good defensively and overhead, OK speed, and has the right "team first" mind set to do that role.

I think he's worked hard enough and gave a lot to this team for many years, and deserves to be given every opportunity to get back into the side and cement his spot.

Plus if this works it means no McKenzie and letting Viney settle into a more attacking role. Viney is a clearance machine and that should be his primary role. Tagging is good for his development but I can't see it being his long term role.

For the idiots who want Cross out of the team, can I remind you that he is our leading possession winner after the first 2 games.

Vs GC. 24d 8m 4t

Vs GWS. 23d 4m 1t

Leg speed is not everything.

There is certainly a lot to consider, but basically we need to rove to the opposition rucks, or smash their mids when they pick up the ball.

I was at the game on saturday and once they had the space they were off. I also went to the GC game and we just ran and spread.

So rather than worry too much about talls, I would be getting in guys who will tackle the sheet out of their mids and players who can run and spread.

Most of the players play in the same 30-40 metre space these days so taking contested marks is only useful when there is one on one, two on one.

Couldnt believe what I was seeing on saturday after half time. I was hoping to see more of the run and spread of the GC game

And that is often while shutting an opposition player down. Actually quite baffling people would even consider dropping him.

I agree. I'm just struggling to push away the thought of Demonland post another thrashing and a Dangerfield BOG performance.

Think Talia will go straight to Hogan 'Pennant'

If Frost goes out who takes the 2nd ruck duties? can't be Dawes, he's not a ruck's .....

I don't get the Kent love from some, he has a bit too much Col about him at the moment. As well as work rate, his set shot kicking is poor and I'm not sure about his footy smarts.

My fears exactly I said it on another thread if Dean doesn't get his attitude right we will be talking in 5 years time again about the player he could be. Like Sylvia he has all the tools. It's up to him now. Even if Talia goes to Hogan then we know Jesse has the desire and will to run him up the ground. Don't discount Hogan pinch hitting

The only change I'd make is with the sub. Brayshaw should get a full game in place of ??? as the sub.

I originally named Kent but he was one of the few to chase in the second half. Frost, Garland or Howe could make for an interesting choice as sub.

I thought Roos said it was his role for this year(or the intermediate) as part of his development.

Is this founded or just speculation? Genuine question. He seems like he has a bit of attitude, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing and I thought he was one of only a handful who tried to chase when they got on top, and he was dangerous in the first half.

With regard to the GWS game, apparently everyone who played at the MCG in round one lost the following week (cause of hard surface after cricket maybe?). Maybe that's one of the reasons why we lost :P anyways i'm expecting a nail-biter this week. We play good at Adelaide oval.

laughing at how everyone jumped off Ben Newton and other players cos of 1 game

Who's everyone? I find it more amusing people pushing for Grimes to come back into the team. Managed to watch a few games over the weekend, effective users of the footy, what a concept.....

Will he play next year? It's the balance of being competitive and looking forward.

Looking forward we are more than likely to feature Petracca in our best 22, as a forward/midfielder. No problems with Cross playing this year as part of our best 22 as he is not keeping Petracca out, just keeping his place warm.

I would really like to see this duel, I know Hogan is only in his 3rd game but he does provide a lot and it will be a good test.

The other one I want to see is Tommy Mc on Tex, I hope we don't fall for using Dunn again. If anyone remembers that master stroke a few years back then you know it aint gonna work.

...on Kent, I like some of what he brings to the table and he is still young in football terms but he has a long, long way to go.

JKH, those who talk about his defensive pressure, I think you will find that is one of the reasons he was out of the team on the weekend. It's not that he picks and choses, he is young and does get exposed in this area at times. I'm being kind here but he just forgets to go.

So far this year, Cross and Viney have been our best midfielders, so neither of these guys will loose their position to Petracca next year if they keep this form up, it will be others.

Thats because Petracca will be played as a forward next year.

Subject to injury, soreness issues ect, I'd leave the team as is for one more week, see how they go. I have a feeling what happens will tell us a lot about whether we are heading in the right direction or not. Its not so much the result (playing Adelaide in their current form, away, is a big ask), its the performance.

No change. Tempted to drop Howe for his utterly disinterested display but maybe There is something I don't know here. Also thought frost was poor but our lack of 2nd ruck options are slim.

I reckon no change this week.

Roos will give them a chance to respond.

There was something not quite right. You can't drop everyone and some of the worst were usually our best.

As a result i think he'll back them in. But i wouldn't want to play poorly this week.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
