Paul Roos has taken 23 players up to the national capital today, the majority of who were not on the club's primary list when he was appointed as coach of the club late in 2013.

I'm counting the eleven players recruited since then (the travelling emergency JKH was drafted in November 2013) and Jesse Hogan who was on the club's books as a GWS compensation pick but not officially listed until the National Draft.

Then there's Neville Jetta who was delisted at the season's end but provided with another chance and redrafted as a rookie for the 2014 AFL season who grabbed that chance and is now established as a senior player.

That makes a majority of the players making up what I would call Roosy's new age team. I'm looking forward to them taking another step forward this afternoon.

I Just want us to split these bastards open and smash them by a 100 pts. Go Dees

The one problem going into a game with expectation is you end up left with anger, frustration and dissapointment if we lose. Let's hope for a 2-0 start to the year. Dees by 7

Today was the first time in a long time that a legitimately classy player (JKH) was left off the team. I thought Kent would be left off but he would have been equally unlucky. That's a good sign and it's great that Terlich, M Jones, Bail, McKenzie are in the VFL because our developing players are now in a more competitive VFL side.

With Dawes back, this is a solid forward line:

HF: Dean Kent, Jesse Hogan, Jack Viney
F: Jeff Garlett, Chris Dawes, Jack Watts

Will be interesting to see where Frost plays since he's starting on the interchange bench. He's a very interesting player and if we can mould him into a ruck / forward that's huge for us. Roosy and co must be aware of how shallow our ruck depth is outside of Jamar. And Frost is a big unit. Having him around the contest at stoppages is a big plus, he's good at ground level and he fits the mould of the more agile modern rucks like Grundy and Martin.

Definitely want to see us smash GWS. Hopefully last week has given the guys a template for playing four solid quarters. Can't believe the Dees are still paying $2.55. Seems too high.

I reckon it's a 50-50 game. Overall I really want us to back up with another 4 quarter performance. I still need to be convinced last week wasn't a once off

There is no reason why we can't win this of we go in hard all game and play with confidence.

Some will argue Trengove, others Petracca - but I think today's side is the best 22.

I'm not expecting to win, the Giants seem to match-up well against us. But I'll be disappointed if we don't.

It's funny cause GWS supporters think they should win; and we think we should win. It'll be an interesting game today...

This game makes me nervous. Yes we defeated an albeit depleted Suns team last weekend, but now we go up against a team that comprises a good balance of youth and experience...and let's not forget that much of their team are top ten draft picks (top five even), who are all starting to accumulate the number of games that see them moving to the next level courtesy of experience.

I hope we win, but there's no way I'm going to consider this a fait accompli!

I think they're right and they'll win today. They are a pretty good team and playing with confidence.

Also interested to see how Garlett backs it up. remembering him at carlton he would play well one week then going missing for weeks on end

Both sides go in with confidence after good first up wins and it is definitely a 50/50 game. They look like they have spread the depth better across young guns and experience. As Frosty said this could be the beginning of years of rivalry between the two sides.

Barndee I hope you have some kind of rain man ability with numbers.

I think the real area we can get on top is our forwards vs there backs.

Having said that they could get hold of us out of the middle if we aren't careful

GWS are a much team than the one that snuck home against the Saints last week.

I'm expecting it to be a nail-biter.

Demons by 3 points.

A couple of massive match ups.

Dunn/?/frost vs Cameron(who is just a kid)

Jamar vs Mumford

Just a kid? He's 22 years old...hardly "just a kid".

This looks to be the best team we've fielded in years. With only four on the injury list, 3 of them kids we definitely have no excuses today.

this team will slowly become the best team we have fielded this century under Roosy's guidance.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
