We got lucky?

This was one of the most 4 qtr effort win in a very long time. We got challenged several times yet we rose to the challenge and came up on top.

These are what the top teams go about it. I am not saying we are one of them but we earnt every goal through sheer hard work.

I tell you what we got lucky with it was Lynch getting suspended. I really think it was the difference, they had no tall to go to while we had Hogan and when the game was there to be won Hogan kicks a goal and crashes a pack which resulted in a goal to Newton. They had no one who could do that.

The game is more dependent on momentum and conversely momentum killer moments these days. Cool heads can counter momentum. If Ablett kicked that goal, their momentum could have been unstopable as they were surging. The game turned back our way after that fumble. Luckily Lamumba made that great play after Toumpas mucked up. We havent had many cool heads in the past.

Watch the replay Jamar smashed Smith for the first half. Gorringe took his spot and done a lot better job, he helped them get back into the game. Smith had an absolute shocker.

Whilst I think Jamar was an important player for us and we would have struggled to win without him he didn't smash Smith. Smith had 37 hit outs v Jamar 29, they both had minimal impact as far as disposals go with Smith 6 and Jamar 5.

I think Jamar's ability to impose his physical presence was important and not just in the ruck contests. Smith will be a very good ruckman and whilst he did get some telling taps to advantage Jamar made it hard for him to have a real impact on the game. He didn't smash him.

Not sure if it has been discussed. What did people think of Jetta in the last quarter when he got hit and stayed down? The commentators were clearly not impressed at all and the hit he got didn't look that bad but I've always thought of Jetta as a very tough player, I wouldn't think he would stay down unless he was hurting.

I agree, if you watch the footage without Derm and co casting aspersions (with little evidence), you'd assume the copped an elbow to the back of his head, was stunned and lay there gathering himself.

Bit late to this but after a weekend away had first chance to sit down and watch the whole game..

fmd...who are these people in Red and Blue....they're playing footy and a very watchable variety of it.

They actually seem to function as a team. A little raw but you can see it.

Ive been on Watt's back so long now i cant remember when it started but it was because he needed to be who he can be and not an imitation of it. Here hes playing a very good game of footy. . I think he finally arrived, long time coming but keep at it Jack. The Van Man...almost the find of the draft. Looks like hes a 30 gamer already. Ive liked Kent for a while...hes going to get better still. Newton dispelled the doubts. It looked like the Dees were actually enjoying the game, enjoying the contest, reveling in the reward for hard work.

That little dance by Harry after his goal was pure ecstasy of the moment.

Still some silly hesitations, some intriguing decisions at times by players but all in all light years from where we've been. Still a long way to go but such an encouraging and enjoyable start to a season, cant remember the last one.

I thought he copped a forearm or shoulder to the of the neck/head. I've never seen Jetta shirk an issue and don't think he ever would. I think they were talking macho carp. If they had watched Jetta closely over his career they would know that he was probably stunned and hurt rather than shirking.

Anyone who's copped an elbow to the side of the head knows the feeling. Can take a while to shake off the stars and unscramble the brain. He copped a beauty at full momentum. If he wasn't so tough he would have stayed down longer. He didn't shirk the contest either.

Agree Nev is no shrinking violet. A few forwards will attest to that.

I don't think Jetts shirked it, he stayed in the contest and got hit. In saying that, one thing I noticed more in rnd 1 was a number of players across the comp looked to have taken a knock that didn't look that hard but they thought was going to win them a free kick so they stayed down. The players stayed down expecting if they looked like they were hurt or had been knocked to forcefully the umpire would give them a kick. The players stayed down but appeared fine not long after, a nod to the protection given to players now days and if the contact is too forceful then more likely then not a free is given.

Incorrect. My memory lied to me also, but when I checked the replay it was after the Prince goal and we led by 18 when that fumble happened. 8:15 remaining check it yourself

Just had a look at the Shaw report footage. Great to see the Melbourne boys getting into it including Jack Watts. Also impressed with Jeff Garlett's concern for Dean Kent lying on the ground. He appeared, with a protective arm, to be making sure no one landed or trod on Dean. Well done Jeff Garlett!

Jesse's eyes lit up and he was starting to set up when the umpire took it off him.

I just love the fact that he has no compunction about taking such a critical kick at an important time in what was his debut game. Great attitude and further evidence of his self-belief.

Also on Jesse-watch, how quickly did he get to his feet after splitting the pack in the last quarter - he was as nimble and quick as Newton, who then teamed up with JKH for his second goal.

If it had been on the opposite pocket, I would go for Salem. What a beautiful kick for goal. Look at our last goal on Saturday from Salem. Split the middle so effortlessly.

Yes he's a very good kick, don't know if we have yet seen an attempt at goal, set shot deep on the boundary though. Watts has nailed a handful of them

To be honest, seeing him crash that pack and get up quicker than the GC players brought me as much joy as his goals. Reminded me of Neitz and Schwartz in their day.

I'm just so happy that his first official game in dees colours was a win and he snagged a couple of goals. He will put in a game this year that will have the rest of the competition shaking in their boots.
