Howe left public saying he wanted to go somewhere for the oppertunity to play in a forwardline *chuckles*. As he left a club for selfish reasons he opens himself up for booing. Players who get pushed out the door, good examples are Cross, Stevie J and Crowley. All tend to get applause from their former club. Supporters are usually fair with their former players treatment and I think we are no different. Had Jamar played in round 2 I have no doubt he would have been applauded.

I also have no time for players who the club took a big risk on (given where we plucked him from), who then gets too big for their own boots and goes on demanding the world.

Howe was being selfish and wasted our time. I wish him luck, but he made his own bed.

He also had his agent touting him as needing 600k a year. Maybe that wasnt Howes fault but I always thought outside of his marking he wasnt a very good player.

Interesting point OD; I heard one of the early commentators (I think it was Tony Charlton) being interviewed a while back and he talked about the choice they made as the original commentators to take the soccer commentary tack (just naming the players) or the fully descriptive tack.  After trial and error they opted for the latter and the rest is history

One of sports greatest commentators Richie Benaud had 8 rules for commentary,

1. Never ask a statement.
2. Remember the value of a pause.
3. There are no teams in the world called 'we' or 'they'.
4. Avoid cliches and banalities, such as 'he's hit that to the boundary', 'he won't want to get out now', 'of course', 'as you can see on the screen'.
5. The Titanic was a tragedy, the Ethiopian drought a disaster, and neither bears any relation to a dropped catch.
6. Put your brain into gear before opening your mouth.
7. Concentrate fiercely at all times.
8. Above all, don't take yourself too seriously, and have fun.

No waste of time their heads are too big to worry what the master broadcaster from Channel 9 thought.

Though I was disappointed to see us loose Howe (clearly quality player ability wise), I think we have come out in front from last years trade period, when you consider the gains of Kennedy, Bugg, the ellivation in picks that got us Wied/Clarry and we are yet to see what Jake can do for us next year.

The outcomes thus far of Howe's practical defection might also serve as an example to other Melbourne players in a similar position.  

However, overall I'm not completely in favor of the present free agency set-up.  Some have said that the compensation picks should go, however I really think they need to stay.  What I most dislike about FA is that the recruiting club gets a free shot at getting to recruit talent without having to give up anything in return, which heavily favours the already powerful clubs like Hawthorn.  It would still be free agency if the recruiting club had to give up a draft pick of approximate/equivalent value, as the players original club does not have to agree to the player leaving.

there has been some talk that top 4 (or whatever number) clubs should have to drop draft picks for incoming fa's or some other sort of penalty

i think there is some merit in that

I reckon we'll be pretty happy to make it work for us when we're a top 4 team pressing for a flag (or two)... 

As we move into being a regular finals team the free agency tide will swing in our favour.
