So we give away Howe to move up 3 places in the draft?

Dumb deal for us.

And maybe pick 22 back to on trade for Kennedy and a third rounder...which we can use for Bugg?

Agree. would much rather north. Due to other offers, they would be forced to use pick 15 for Howe with maybe a swap of picks like our 3rd for their 4th or something.

But I also think he may chose the pies unfortunately

I am so over him making us dance to his tune!!

Two can play Howe's game!!

Its time for us to show some mettle and play hardball: if he chooses Pies we ask them to match the best trade offer we had.

If they can't match it they will have to withdraw their offer to Howe.

He then chooses between (presumably) GC and North.

Don't understand why we would want to trade Howe to move 3 spots up into the draft ? Thought picks 1 & 2 were clear cut but after that wasn't too much difference between the rest of the top dozen. So why would we want pick 3 ? I'd much rather gold coasts 2nd rounder or their pick 19 compensation pick they have I think ? Then on trade whatever pick we get for one of melksham/Kennedy/bugg... Don't see the logic in moving 3 spots in the draft

Theres probably more to all of this than being reported.

I am sure theres plenty... its not like the morons in the media would have a clue what Roos, Mahoney and co are engineering behind the scenes

Completely agree!!! This whole thing about a player now selecting where he wants to go is rubbish, how the hell is a club suppose to push for the best possible trade when a player that is not a FA nominates 1 club!!

I like what clubs are starting to do (Brisbane & GWS) set an example

And since when did managers think it was ok to tell the clubs what to do. ie Connors telling Adelaide to accept compensation from the AFL Re Dangerfield

Ugh, they'll probably just offer a straight swap for Kennedy. We'll turn it down and they'll throw in their 3rd or 4th rounder as steak knives.

Howe was our only real chance of getting genuine currency so if he chooses the club tied up in every other trade that's not a great outcome.

This is what I feared.

Time to harden up Melbourne.

Playing finals requires a mindset. Part of it is how you go about dealing with teams off the field. We need to box clever here...push hard but just hard enough.

This is probably why we keep our cards close to our chest. The fact that Collingwood know we want one of their players (and he's already asked to be traded) works heavily against us getting the strongest currency for Howe now. Just look at the way Collingwood played the Beams trade last year as an example of how to play the system; they probably wanted Crisp all along but coerced Brisbane into "throwing him in" as a steak knives inclusion with 5 and 25. Lo and behold, the very next year he's performing like an A-grader.

Something stinks about the way their club operates; everyone knows they're ruthlessly underhanded. They're just another club who tanked all those years ago to secure their players (and the shiny priority pick) for their premiership tilt.

It wouldn't surprise me one iota if Collingwood had agreed to terms over a year ago and told him to underperform in 2015, so they could trade for him cheaply.

It is being reported as Howe and 6 for 3 and "steak knives" (Mark Stevens). So player or maybe a late second rounder they might pick up. Hoping it is a second rounder that we can hand over for Melksham.

Lots of shadow boxing at the moment.

We're in a good spot re-getting value for Howe...

  • Howe has a good media presence as a walking highlights reel that the fans will love
  • We have three clubs interested in him
  • Gold Coast have reportedly offered him a four year deal for pick 3 upgrade from 6 and 2-3 rounder

And it looks like GC are moving... :)

so we see if North or Pies are willing to pay more.

The best player we could possibly get access to is either Parish or Curnow, neither of whom will be available at pick 6. This is the reason we're entertaining the upgrade.

I presume we'll get steak knives back for pick 6 and Howe, but don't expect a clear win for us. The win will be access to the best non-academy mid in the draft.

Pick 3 and their second rounder for Howe and 6 would suffice. That second rounder, with ours, potentially lands us Kennedy and Melksham to go with who we believe is the best player in the draft after the two key position players.

The highlights of Parish on the run, reminded me of Ben Cousins in full flight.

I like the way the club is targeting players and then determinately pursuing and trading to get them. IF the "steak knives" are like the "steak knives" we got for pick 2 a couple of years back, we'll be laughing.

Agreed, it isn't enough. They'd have to throw in their third rounder (to get Bugg).

Second round pick. Howe could very well get us a first round pick from North. A three place upgrade is nothing. Three places and their second round pick is about right. Third round pick would be worthless to us.

A guy on Punt Road End (RFC Support Forum) claims to be family friends of Adam Saad and believes he is considering asking for a trade back to Victoria already. Obviously, take this with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't mind pick 3 and Saad back for Howe, 6 and steak knives. We could use some speed and skill of half back.

2 years ago we swapped pick 2 for Tyson and Pick 9 (Salem)

This was presumably on the belief that a handful of places in the draft is worth less a whole other player

Wouldn't Howe+Pick6 be the opposite of this strategy?

Depends on the player(s), the list and the opinions on such of the people in charge at each club.

We gave up two picks and gained two players.

If we give up Howe and 6, it'll be for 3 and a second/third rounder. Two for two, just like 2 & 20 for Tyson & Salem.

If they do this then they are 'Jonesing' for another 'Brayshaw' they have lined up a long way out...

Some kid who won't be there at 6.

On face value, yes. But Tyson was far more valuable than Howe, two years removed at the time from being a number three pick.

Also, if we can grab 'steak knives' in the form of a second or third rounder that would then go for Kennedy, it effectively becomes Howe + 6 for Kennedy + 3, which would probably be a win if we're set on Parish or Curnow.

Howe isn't a free agent. Melbourne shouldn't care what he wants. He wants out and we want the best deal. If he's not happy, he can go into the draft. Sick of selfish players getting their way. He has done SFA in football. The nerve.

We should have our best interests at heart. And only our best interests.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
