I love the effort he puts in. He just throws himself at the contest and holds nothing back. He still needs to work on his skills, but you can't possibly fault the work ethic and he's now had a couple of games and is getting his head around the pace of the game. I think he's going to make it.

I think his skills for his stage of development are good. Doesn't make too many mistakes. He missed that set shot but that was about the only negative,

Been waiting for Harmes to take the game on since first getting a seniors gig. In fact it's my regular comment when barracking and I see him in the play - "take em on Harmesey!"

Saturday's form showed some flashes of what he does on a more frequent basis at Casey. It's the first time I've seen this from him at AFL level and was a great thing to see. I hope he grows in confidence from here on. He has some natural talent and a lot of grunt, plus a tiny bit of X factor.

Laid a couple of nice tackles and kept the pressure on too, really made the most of being subbed on, one of if not the best sub performance we've had.

Hopefully onwards and upwards from here as he looks a likely type.

Looks a likely lad - loved his tackling and contested mark. Could easily have had 2 goals.

With Harmes, ANB and Stretch (as well as the more obviously highly rated Brayshaw and Petracca) we had a pretty good recruiting season for young talent - and throw in VDB as well.

I suspect that many may have thought that the first three youngsters may have had to wait until 2016 to get a decent look in - surprised me and though works in progress haven't disappointed one bit.

Maybe it's just because he's young but from watching him at the ground and then on the replay he seemed not unhappy being the sub which is a nice change (even if the rule will go next year). He had a spring in his step and seemed to be giving a bit of positive energy to his team mates when on the bench.

He took a nice mark to get that shot on goal and I'm excited to see if he can take a few more good grabs and maybe a big hanger before the end of the year.

It's going to take more good drafting and development to say we have anything resembling depth but I'm pumped for the preseason we should be able to have now we have guys like Harmes, ANB, Stretch, Brayshaw and Vanders who will all be keen on improving to get in the best 22. The intensity and skills should go up and with some continuity we are a chance to see guys really working hard knowing nothing will be for granted.

Harmsy Chomp is amazing! He had an impact from the moment he came on the field and I am so thrilled that he kicked that goal, his first in AFL thanks to AVB! :)

Go Chomper!! :)

Not often you see two players still currently on the rookie list as the last two touches in a goal.

Other than maybe Bernie's third, no other goal got me psyched up more than that one. Crucial in the context of the game and he was just so stoked about it. He has an enthusiastic bounce about him that I find infectious, I wonder if it has a similar effect on his teammates. Just looks like he loves being out there and is playing accordingly.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Harmes is our sixth debutant this year (Hogan, Brayshaw, vandenBurg, Stretch, Neal-Bullen, Harmes). In addition, there have been four players new to the club who have played this year (Lumumba, Frost, Garlett, Newton).

Apart from 1858, have we ever had six players debut in a season before?

Finally looked comfortable at the level, I liked that he took one of his big marks that he frequently was able to take at Casey as well, this is something he's really good at.

Even some of his tackling, pressure acts, and little knock ons to a teammates advantage that don't necessarily show up impact-wise on the stats sheet were really pleasing.

Look forward to him keeping it up for a few more senior games.

All very good points and great to see a lot of positive posts here. Harmsy deserves it.

His ability to get his arms free in tackles is so important and I think the biggest reason he has been able to impact games so early. He works perfectly in Roos' game plan of attacking the contest and getting the ball out back to the man with vision ahead.

His intensity is great with the ball and tackling when he doesn't have it. Even when he can't lay the tackling he closes in on the player and gives less space and opportunity to dispose of the ball. Has a bit of Viney bite to him which I think gives him the edge over ANB at the moment and uses the ball a little better.

Very happy with his progress. Want to see him play out the rest of the year in the seniors.

Still quite raw - but he has three really good attributes - goes hard at the ball, runs hard and has neat skills ( and yet he plays for us - go figure !). The neat skills being the most important - as we have shown continually - turn the ball over and you are shot to pieces.

I didn't think that the Pies were that bad on Saturday - they just butchered the ball. And the incessant pressure from the Tigers made the Hawks turn the ball over which is a rarity - and hence they lost.

This is the beauty of getting more "Brayshaws" - rarely makes a bad decision and just executes his skills well.

i like him more currently than ANB. Not sure why, just do.

ANB reminds me a little of Grimes (awkward - kind of lanky movement) but so far he has been effective. Could change as his body develops.

One thing I have really noticed in the last few games is all our players really looking to get the arms up and high before just before the tackle impact and looking to wear a tackle and be looking to hands off before going down. It finally looks like the top sides when we do it.

I love the fact that he is a big boy who loves to tackle and run and jump at it! I was at the Geelong game so ANB is first in my books! Hopefully he becomes our Poulopulo & Harmes our Isaac Smith!!

have said this before myself. agree totally.

Disagree, nothing like Grimes.. Has genuine goal sense and better footy instincts.. Never seen Grimes kick a snap badicslly over his head from 30 out.. And pretty sure I never will!!

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
