We are the club taking the least number of rookies tomorrow. We are the only club out after the 2nd round. Just a trivia point.

And we got out of the draft by pick 53 which is solid as well. The rookie picks I guess you can argue point to us making good calls on Harmes and King last year and therefore them being around for a second rookie. Of course what we really want is them to step up to the senior list in the next year or two and then more rookies to keep coming through, that's how you develop the depth of your list and do more with less picks.

Yes yes and yes.

No, no and no. He's not better than Garlett and I'd rather get valuable games in to Kent, Salem, Toumpas, JKH, Petracca etc.

I think he would be a really good addition, he was providing a good 3rd fwd presence and "getting games into..." I thought we would have learnt didn't work.

I believe that the clubs that were eligible for a 'pre-selected rookie' won't be revealed until after the PSD, as the 6 or so picks in the PSD can take said players.

So if the Lions did 'pre-select' this Hammelman kid, Carlton (for example) can take him in the PSD before the Lions lay claim to him in the Rookie Draft.

That is my understanding.

Knightmare gives his thoughts on Melbourne's Rookie Draft priorities and options:

Some class and pace is needed now that the midfield has been bulked up.

Fordham, Glenn and N.Newman could be some list fits and some guys who can make the grade.
Fordham as a taller outside mid with some class and pace. Glenn as a classy multi-positional player. Then Newman is a ready to go back flanker who can provide some rebound. All have chances to make it.

That is not my understanding. If he is preselected, he can't be taken by anyone else in the PSD, or Rookie Draft.

Not interested in more generic mids with experience, I think we've got enough that are fringe 22: McKenzie, Newton, Michie, Riley, Bail, M.Jones - that's gotta be enough soldiers.

When was the last successful KPF rookied? It just doesn't happen, they come early in the draft or F/S.

We don't need any more KPBs.

First ruck depth is OK with Jamar, Gawn, Spencer - if there is a fwd/ruck prospect like King I'd have some interest.

But I'd be looking for small defender and small attacking forward.

Disagree... if available go with Matt Hammelman as ruck/fwd option

Agree ... small attacking fwd ... Tom Wilkinson.

You're right about the dearth of key forwards taken in previous rookie drafts although I suppose James Podsiadly might be a sort of exception in that he was rookied on three occasions (1999, Essendon @ 58, 2001, Collingwood @ 8 and 2009 Geelong @50) and ended up playing a pivotal role in Geelong's 2011 premiership team.

Even, if you don't count him, the fact is that the recruiting landscape is rapidly changing since the advent of free agency and mature rookies. The Pre Season Draft is virtually defunct these days as a result of delisted FA's and many players are now being re-rookied after being delisted by their own and other clubs while the rookie list is now where most of the players from state leagues come from.

I suppose it's all going to depend on what the recruiting staff think are the club's main needs and on the quality of what's available but in any event, most of us will know in a little over four hours' time.

I named Aaron Vandenberg as someone we will look at pick 53 last week.

He had a meeting at the club prior to the draft.

190cm ball magnet midfielder.

Got 56 disposals in one game this year.

Pick 20: Mitchell White from dandy stingrays

DOB: 10 Apr 1996
Height: 188cm
Weight: 85kg
Local Club: Seaford/St Peter's College

"An on – field leader with the way he speaks, constructive feedback to teammates on where they should be positioning. A great spoiler, time after time again, he uses his leap to spoil effectively over the boundary. Used the ball really nicely to teammates. Played across the back line and through the midfield. Good as a third man up option. Looked a standard above today."

Like the bit as a 'third man up option'!!

Both Capiron and Bampton weren't picked up but were both touted as mid to late draft picks in the National Draft.

I wonder what's going on there?

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
