The AFL is run by an independent commission but it set a precedent last year of taking notice of the clubs who were upset about Melbourne's application for draft assistance because of the fact that we had recently been the subject of a tanking investigation. Now the AFL is colluding with a club that has been involved in at best poor governance over a drugs program that involved injecting its players with thousands of needles. The collusion involves assisting the Bombers (who lost draft picks as part of the sanctions against them) in a substantial way with regard to a "trade" deal that's nothing less than a phony scam.

Wouldn't be because a courtroom would force the AFL to disclose their behind the scenes dealings with Essendon, would it? Perhaps Andy D. warning them that ASADA was on to them?

We got shat on when the rest of the league ganged up on us over the PP. Time we return the favour to Essendon.

Yes, Essendon will have to play their part by terminating Ryders contract, but that hasn't happened yet, so all anger directed at Essendon is unwarranted I would have thought until it happens, if in fact it does.

Seriously, at this stage I would settle for picks 17 and 36 [what ever Ports first 2 picks are] for Ryder, but if this new scenario does play out, and we can get picks 17 and 21 instead, of course I would take it.

But it's a long way off happening.

Can see why Port and Essendon would just love this. Essendon get two picks inside the top 20, and Port get two players (including Ryder) for the price of pick 17.

So this means any player under contract but having been at a club for 8 years (soon to be 6 if the AFLPA get their way) can now magically be converted into a free agent at the whim of their club if their compensation pick serves them better than a trade would. Especially with the way contracted players are now demanding trades on a whim.

Geez, can't see that being open to rorting AT ALL.

Point 1: if they get a pick directly after their first pick, wouldn't this be third round thanks to exclusion from the first two rounds for their governance issues?

Point 2: if they void the contract, isn't that like 'retirement', then the Mal Michael clause kicks in?

He should be traded as there is a valid contract registered with the AFL.

If this goes ahead, I can see brown stuff flying everywhere. I am more riled abou this than anything I have seen in a while. The competition is dead if this gets up....it is not a competition but a display event for marquee teams and everyone else can just get Fcccked.

Obviously there's a few reasons this won't happen (diluting Frawley's compo the obvious one), but surely if the AFL approve this deal it opens the floodgates for all kinds of outrageous draft tampering. Collingwood could even offer to pay us money on the side to put towards Lamumba's contract and thus push up their compensation to a higher band. Or they could do it legitimately if he was a restricted free agent, as they could push up his price and force us to match it, again pushing up their compensation.

This is well and truly muddying the waters.

Exactly, what's to stop them from doing the same thing? It's basically tanking for priority picks in a new disguise: cancelling contracts for better FA compo.

& essendon look to get 2 picks back for ryder, & then gorringe as well, as a replacement.

the AFL need to keep 2 steps back from the system as it works, they are constantly winding the key to the clockwork themselves, & interfering with the natural order.

the game is becoming a joke of manipulation.

AFL, step back, fix the interchange & the fixture to even things up, make the bottom 8 draft positions a lottery, & just watch proceedings from there.
