Spent the entire season at Casey without getting an AFL call up which does not bode well for his career going forward.

As I have stated elsewhere, I think he needs to go to a SANFL or WAFL club where he will be viewed as a leader having had AFL experience.

He seems to lack confidence and the desire to impose, but he has speed and is a good kick and ball user.

It would not surprise me if after a year or two in such leagues, he may become worthy of another gig at AFL.

Think we played him out of position for most of his time at Melbourne. Never looked like a defender, but we played him there because he could kick. Should've tried to make him an outside winger (where he played in U18s), delivering the ball forward.

I know we tried him a bit there at Casey this year, but think the horse had already bolted.

It's one thing to waste a high draft pick on a dud footballer. It's entirely another to give him 6 years on the senior list. I don't think he's improved one iota in the time he's been here, and he should have been delisted three years ago. I still maintain that Neeld's reluctance to clear out deadwood such as Strauss in his first year was his biggest failing.

No W00dy. In the AFL you have to go when it's your turn, regardless of whether your position is HBF, wing or anywhere else. Six years on our list and Strauss still hasn't proved that he can meet this prerequisite. If he had shown it at Casey, then he would have earned a senior gig or two in 2014, just so Roosy could have a look at him at that level (as per Blease, Tapscott, Nicho and Evans). He didn't earn that opportunity for a reason!

Sounded good - "elite kick". Trouble was I rarely saw him win a ball, so actually hard to asses.

Agree with that, GTG. I remember being at that Carlton match and being pretty impressed by Strauss' game. Shame he never reached that level again.

I have never met Paul Roos, nor have I met any of his confidants. Yet I can say with great confidence that Paul Roos is not a James Strauss fan.

Will be delisted if a home is not found at the trade table.

Shame for Strauss, as he was a beautiful kick of the footy, and a nice bloke.

He still is a beautiful kick and displays it regularly at Casey. Where he lacks is defensive pressure and urgency / tenacity on his opponent. Gorn.
