The Ox

I was 14 in 1994, an age where footballers are your hero's & David Schwartz was exactly that. I was absolutely devastated when he broke down. I remember sitting in red seat Melbourne members area & people just looking at each other saying how good is this guy, amazing player.

I was nearly 40 years old same, same Matt!

[censored] Moon - I was with you that day (how could you forget?) You couldn't take your eyes of the prepubescent girl that was sitting in front of us.

I was watching the game. Besides, you were too busy guzzling beer to see much else.

BTW, it's 'off', not 'of'. Some teacher you are......

Remember him well, we had forward line neitz, ox, lyon ,pike but injury and off ground activities gutted us. Saw him do his knee against sydney in an innocuous turn and Collingwood in a pre season in Lavington. We could add others like, Jacovich, Jurrah, into what could have been category.

The fact that David managed to play 173 games after the knee problems he had is a testament to his commitment to footy and his durability.

Lesser men would have given the game away.

A giant of this football club.

& came back to be a very very good team footballer. onja OX.

Great article on one of the most exciting and colourful players ever to wear our guernsey.

He was absolutely electrifying in 1994 when he was destined for greatness.

Jesse Hogan's followed up his story with this great YouTube package that takes in Schwarz's three next-to-last games before doing his knee - when he was at the absolute height of his powers.

What a side, what a player, what a waste the last 8 years have been.

Yes but its nice to relive the memories. 20 years ago! Wow! We had great forwards but don't forget the backline! Prymke killed Kernahan that day

1994 Schwarz is comfotably the best player I have ever seen play in the red and blue and that piece of play at 11:25 is the most incredible thing I have seen on a football field just about.

DAT SPIN AT 1:37.

When Jako went down towards the end of the season, The Ox really stepped up his game. Those 9 against Sydney in Round 24 to put us into the finals was absolutely God-like.

Why has this club had such badluck with forwards?

Jakovich was flying before he screwed his back. Lyon was always injured. Schwartz did his damn knee 3 times.

Then we saw Jurrah, Clark, Wonna, Hogan all have their own fair share of problems.

There was probably only one period of time where we didn't have any major on-field injury issues in my time supporting this club, and it was from probably 98 until 2006. Everything around that has been frustrating.

Don't forget Sean Charles in that 94 forward line who played very few games after that due to a carpal tunnel problem I think. He could play!

Avec,

Bring back the poofy headband.

Unnecessary...

And the Schwarta, Lyon, Pike combo in '94 was deadly. Went to just about every game that year.

Lyon was my favourite player, followed later by Farmer. Schwarta was a close third though. Then there was Neitz, Stynes, Viney. Wow, we had some great players in the '90s.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
