Honestly, I watched FC last night and I read in the interview that the 3rd year was a fait accompli.....it was just a matter of everyone sitting down for a chat.

He is DEFINITELY not going past three years, (his words) but 24 months is a long time in footy....

the final 2 minutes is an eternity, at least in a few of our recent games

Let's say that at the end of 2016 we've just bowed out of an elimination or semi final (I honestly believe this is a good chance BTW) after coming from the depths that we've come from, how could anybody possibly just walk away without trying to finish the job.. it's unfathomable really

And if Roos feels that Rawlings IS the best option, and IS an experienced coach (certainly as an apprentice).

Do you want someone more experienced at senior level.....maybe Neeld, Voss, Geishen, Wallace, Matthews??

True....Ratten had our midfield up and firing. Can't remember the circumstances of his departure? Was it a more senior gig elsewhere or maybe some ND idiosyncrasy?

He was knifed and not supported by a CarlTank Board who just wanted a bigger name. Malthouse has done them a fat lot of good.

Very much in favour of second chances. Previous failures can be a great learning experience and light a fire in the belly.

Think someone like Ratten could be a great get especially after being part of the Hawk system.

My source (who has been right about everything thus far) has informed me that melbourne will be targeting Brett Ratten as Roos' successor.

What troubles me, perhaps unfairly, is why didn't Hawthorn appoint him as fill in when Clarkson was indisposed?

OK, after watching Footy Classified after I posted this topic I began to wonder about the accuracy of the comment from the Club so I tracked down the number from the person that rang me yesterday and just rang him again to get a confirmation.

At least I could confirm that he was ringing from the Club which was a relief as I was beginning to wonder if it was a scam.

He based the comment largely on a Matt Burgan article from 22 May headed "Three years for me as coach: Roos" If you read the article it doesn't say anything different to what Roosy has been saying all along. He said he apologised if he was misleading what the situation is but that's what that article says which actually it doesn't. Other than that he said he cant confirm that Roosy has actually signed but has had general conversations within the Club that the plan is for him to coach a third year. That doesn't mean he has signed yet.

So, sorry for starting this topic with what I thought was reliable information directly from the Club. For what it's worth like most here, I'm sure Roosy will sign for the third year but clearly that doesn't come from a reliable source.

Coaches in his own right on a legendary run from St Bedes Mentone, for 3 flags in C, B then A grade.

Was at Collingwood for their 2010 flag.

Then at Hawthorn the last few years, including last year's success.

Could be a Neeld option, could be a Clarkson.

I trust Roosy's judgment.

I find it a bit odd ( and not highly believable) that there hasn't been talk with Roos about a third year. From Roos media stuff I can't detect any reluctance to go a third year ( as opposed to his stated position of no 4th year)

Without any facts I would have to take it as given that the club wants him for a third year.

Would I be wrong in thinking that club would have said to Roos - we want you for the third - you tell us when you are ready to announce the third year to the world at large.

It poses the question - when would be the best time for the club and Roos to announce the third year ? Wouldn't it be the sooner the better ? I am not sure why there is a delay.

Maybe Roos is waiting to see if PJ signs up for a few more years (technically PJ's term expires in a few months). If PJ doesn't sign up then PR would like to know who the CEO is before he himself signs up for 3rd year.

On gas we don't panic and rush to a Scott Burns or any other untried Coach. Talks will start seriously with Bomber at conclusion of this season. It will either be Bomber or Ling, hopefully Bomber.

In Mark Neeld's first year, mentioned early that there was a falling out between Stef Martin, Moloney and Neeld. Said that both were going to be traded at years end. Secondly, mentioned that Mark Neeld was going to be sacked before the end of last year. And thirdly, said that we could lock in Roos as our next coach towards the end of last season.

Given a couple of assistant names have been thrown around (I.e. Luke Beveridge) I'm going to raise another reason in favour of Rawlings.

At the end of this year, Ross will have spent 12 months working closely with Rawlings and will know him and his work/coaching style very well. After 2 years Roos will have very good knowledge of whether Rawlings is a genuine understudy who could carry on the culture that he has started.

The alternative is that Roos interviews someone and hopes that person will not talk the Roos talk but walk it.

If Roos feels Rawlings is the one, then I would be much more comfortable than if we interview and hire an unknown.

I'm not saying I'm rooting for Rawlings but it is clear that there may be advantageous of his appointment of he is capable.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with it as I would rather someone work under Roos for 2 years before taking over, but if anyone could make it work it would be Kirk as he knows Roos and his game style as well as anyone. But I get the feeling someone will be appointed this year and that almost rules Kirk out of the race.

Thanks GNF. The 3 years thing is obvious i reckon. I mean this stuff about if the club want to know he'll give an answer is just a nice way to annoy pesky journo and answer without answering. Control the message and when you want a nice little boost of positive news and some media coverage announce it then. Make the media dance to our tune not the other way around. A sign of the new MFC in my book (note: i'm not having a go at you at all - just in case you though i was being a smart arze).

Can't see Bomber being an assistant coach personally but there is no doubt they seem to get on really well if 360 is any guide. Stranger things have happened i guess.

Dom Tyson, notwithstanding his recent public declarations about GWS players, has already been a great boon in this area.

His performance under Roos will be a shining beacon of hope for players looking to go to greener pastures.
