I really like Nathan Buckley and he may have let the lid off the pot today, but in general, I find his views very refreshing.

I can't say I like him much, but I do find I agree with him most of the time. He's pretty much the Stannis Baratheon of the AFL in that respect.

What? Can't a coach give a player a spray anymore?

Getting a too precious if anyone has a problem with that

Oh, he's welcome to do it.

It's just that these days, people understand that it's a stupid, selfish, emotional indulgence that achieves nothing.

So I guess what I'm saying is, he's welcome to do it, at Collingwood.

Incident with Wittsy says more about his coach than the player. Still room for challenges to be laid in this game but too overt today.

Gracious step back.

Dammit, I still have to respect him.

Why oh why wont at least one club give me a completely unambiguous run at legitimately hating them.

Surely not too difficult a task Goffy. Do you have to look further than our opponents of last week?

Well if my boss carried on like that to me in front of others I'd be putting forward a complaint of bullying. It was very unprofessional and a fast way to get a lot of his players offside.

One of the basic fundamental rules of managing people is that you give criticism behind closed doors.

Only one way from here for collongwood while Buckley is in charge and it's decently not up!

He looked like a Bull Terrier, I thought he was going to bite him.

Hmmmm where was all this when Roosy verbally destroyed Terlich earlier this season?

Put your Collingwood bias aside FFS.

Well, I for one was really disappointed by Roos losing his cool and giving such a pointless spray. Remembering this was early enough in the season that the 'magic' hadn't really started to show, we were 0-3 including two disappointing losses that we went in hoping to win.

When I posted about the Buckley brain-fade I was wondering if I should mention the Roos-Terlich one. And clearly the spray didn't do anything to convince Terlich to change his ways. Here he is in the VFL, doing exactly what he got sprayed for it seems;

Dean Terlich: Dean played half-back and half-forward. He had 16 possessions. I thought he was another who was pretty consistent over four quarters for the team. He positioned himself well and communicated well with his teammates in the defensive area. He just made a couple of disappointing decision-making errors, with ball in hand. He tried to be a little bit too cute, when the conditions were certainly not conducive to tricky ball use – he just needed to play the percentages.

Why were you disappointed? Early in the year or not, if a player deserves a spray, he should get a f'k'n spray. If you can't cop a spray then you just have to harden the f up.

Dean Terlich absolutely deserved that spray. That was by far the worst game I have seen him played. Didnt stick to team rules and was making poor dumb decisions.

Glad Roosy gave him a rocket.

Some players or people need to seriously harden up. If your not sticking to the basic fundamental team rules and not sticking to your role you deserve a kick up the ass. I have copped sprays in my playing career. For me its to cop it on the chin and try and win back the respect of my teamates go that one extra harder at the contest.

Im only 24 and not part of the older generation. But I am all for players copping spray when they need it. Players these days are way too sensitive. I have always liked the way Bucks goes about it. Infact id rather him coaching my team then Mick Malthouse. Collingwood will be a powerhouse in coming years. But for him to come out and say what he did on twitter was fantastic and a credit to him.

For me it's not about hurt feelings or anything like that. Having a coach blow up at me would be distracting, and I'd be thinking about it for the rest of the game. It would not be good for my performance at all. Maybe I'm soft that way, but that's just how it is. If Witts isn't like me, then maybe the spray was a good thing for him. Otherwise it was a bad move on Buckley's part.

For example, do you reckon Jack Watts would respond to a physical kick in the bum like that? Hell no. He'd play like shite and might even want out of the club. Jake King probably would love it though. There are some people you need to talk to, and some people you need to bake.

It's not about "deserving" a spray. It's about responding to a spray. The purpose of a spray (or anything a coach does) should be to get his players to play the way he wants them to play. Spraying someone because you're [censored] off does nothing, and makes you look like a dill.

It wasn't a bad move by Buckley because Witts responded afterwards and actually played alright

I know you don't speak for Jack Watts but if any player would want out of the club after a spray like that then they are playing the wrong game and should retire immediately.

I disagree about players deserving a spray. Paul Roos mentioned he already notified Terlich about doing the team things against GWS. Again he didn't follow instructions and it cost us a couple of goals. did he deserve a kick up the backside for not doing the doing team things which resulted in a couple of goals? Absolutely!!

Roos gave Watts and Howe a spray against Sydney. Ever since then they have both been one of our best players since. Again both deserved a spray for not going harder at the contests. For two very talented players it is frustrating for a coach to see them not put in the effort. Sometimes a good spray is what you need to kick start your career.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
