i think we should take the time to applaud James for his tough and bold decision to join the team that just won their 2nd consecutive flag only 5 days ago

What a brave man

it not the contract amt that determines compo

it's amount + #years + player age

don't forget frawley is young and will draw a longish contract

Exactly. Unfortunately for us at this stage "Chip" has not done us a favour. A 4 year deal at the Hawks for around $450K per year won't get us a band 1 compo. More likely band 2 or 3. However the AFL after knocking back our compo pick and wanting to see us not lose out on the MC situation may give us the pick 3 under a "special" circumstrance. Won't hold my breath on that one!

Why will Frawley only get a 4 year deal at 450k? Are they already trying to fit Jones into the cap for 2016? We won't get any special circumstance pick from AFL.

What does he need to get to get band 1?

Posted

I wonder if he had planned to go to the hawks the whole time. I dont think geelong will be happy. They thought they had him.

He didn't. And they did.

Posted

We need 5 to 6 years at 600 for band 1 and the hawks will not pay that

Posted

We have put on offer on the table for Frawley, presumably higher than what the Hawks have offered.

Surely this too should be taken into account when determining his "value".

Posted

I think the way Roos talked in his presser about pick 3, there's no way we are not getting it. If we didn't, I think he and PJ would have an absolute fit.

He talked about it like it was a done deal, and he is too polished a media performer to put himself in the gun like that unless he knows.

Not sure how current this is... http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/free-agency

COMPENSATION

A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;

2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round

• end of 1st round

• 2nd round

• end of 2nd round

• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

I bet my bottom dollar the "no PP" decision came with a guaranteed pick 3 compo for Frawley.

If not, this competition is totally [censored]!

Posted

I don't think I could stomach pick 21 as compensation. Arguably 3 is too high but 21 is just pissing on us while we're down. Would be a shocking look for free agency as a whole and the monster the AFL have manufactured against lower teams.

The difference between those picks is the difference between getting two elite players to our club. I'm absolutely convinced the AFL rejected the PP because we'd probably end up with pick 3 for Frawley. Perhaps the AFL didn't foresee him taking a low ball contract in exchange for a likely premiership, and have now sent us well and truly up [censored] creek without a paddle.

Also consider perhaps this is a ploy by Frawley's manager to get Geelong to up their offer by leaking that he might be going to the Hawks?

Posted

don't know if it is true, but it was reported that freo made a much bigger offer to frawley which would have equated to band 1

even melbourne it seems offered more than what we think the dorks offered

yet it seems none of this is taken into consideration

Would be the ultimate parting gift from Frawley if he took a contract of peanuts just to win a premiership. Says all I need to know about the kind of character he is.

While it would screw us totally, I'd rather a player chase success than money. Says more about his drive to succeed rather than his drive to fatten the wallet.

Posted

Jaded...once they leave us I dont give a flying f... what becomes of them. They are no longer Melbourne until they are again.

Money..success. They can can go. I just want value for them doing so and then to welcome someone new on board.

They're all widgets inthe big picture.

Who will take the place of Frawley in the banner?

Maybe put Dangerfield in there for shits and giggles!

Posted

the public interest already has

look how many people didn't give a rats about the grand final , it will only get worse for the AFL

the younger generation are falling off and following soccer. and its not just melbourne people

It's a marketing fixture driven by ratings & which teams will achieve the best ratings on TV....

Until the afl find away of a true home & away & play it's other twice the comp will never be fair!

Posted

Chip? Spud more like it, poor type of fellow.

It would be just our luck for Hawthorn's offer to be so low as to mean it's band 2.

The AFL should be giving us band 1, but they don't always do the logical thing, so I would not be surprised in the least to see us only get band 2.

They did. But unfortunately that is not where he is going. The system is the system and by the looks of it we lose out. I think we are used to it. However, on a brighter note i believe Danger is to make a decision by the end of the weekend.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
