The Mighty Demons, not the "Dees"

Recommended Posts

Id love to start to see supporters and the football public move away from referring the Club as the "Dees". Yes its a nice nickname but thats the issue I have with it. Its too soft.

What is a 'Dee' by the way?

They are the Demons and now that they are slowly beginning to play like Demons I feel they should be referred to as such.

Dees, which sounds quite effeminate and most certainly not an aggressive name, is used by the media and the footy public far more than "Demons" . Id like to see that discouraged.

Nothing sounds more puncy in the stands than someone yelling out "Go Dees"!

Would love to hear some opinions on this

Most definitely on the lower end of the list of issues the club is dealing with but really is a pretty limp nickname for a footy club. not as bad as fuschias, gee that was a shocker.

The era

Hawthorn were the Mayblooms!

I guess it may have something to do with toning down the sinister conotations of demons and devils. There are many who are uncomfortable with having a devil as a club mascot. Parents, religious, prudish, and bean counting marketing types may find it uncomfortable to follow a club with the devil mascots.

The marketing types have more to answer for. They want to appeal to all the demographics hence we get left with banality.

There are many sporting clubs around the world that use the devil as a mascot including Manchester United, ADC and quite a few national soccer teams. Usually portrayed as the Red Devil.

I also bemoan that our mascot and nick name has been toned down to make it more palatable to sensetive types. I prefer if we whole heartedly embrace the sinister aggressive connotation of the red devil. The wimpy innofensive way our Mascot is portrayed and also the use of the Dees as nickname is a nor here nor there cop out leaving a lot of ambiguity and uncertainty to the self image we want to portray.

All too precious! As someone else pointed out, "Dees" is simply an abbreviation of "Demons". Nothing wrong with it, and I really don't know how anyone could consider it soft. But, go figure!

GO DEES!!!!!!!!!!

The most supported club in the state goes by the "Pies". Can't get any tougher than a nickname that resembles hot pastry and filling.......

Dees is fine!

I hear you Munga but I'm kinda like the others. There are bigger problems that we have.
I think part of the 'Go Dees!' problem is that it is also associated with cries of 'Good kick number 9!' and golf clapping.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
