For once it looked like we had a real ruckman with Jamar, did enough for first game back.

T-Mac did a superb job on Buddy, he kicked one goal and that was from a BS freekick.

I think Nasher summed it up pretty well - there are parts of the game where you feel like we're a team that's around 9-14 on the ladder, which is an improvement on 2012-2013. Salem looked great, JKH played his best game of the year, M Jones was superb all night, Pedersen's getting better and Dunn and McDonald were solid in defence.

However...

Watts and Howe must be dropped. Their efforts tonight were absolutely disgraceful. They both jogged around, neither seeming to care about anything. Howe just wants to take MOTY each week, that's enough for him. I'm disgusted by his effort tonight. Watts was no different. Both must be dropped.

Byrnes is also inept, no idea how he got selected.

As for the rest, they all tried very hard tonight which was reflected in the tackle count and not being totally disgraced in the clearances. But we have far too many players who just do not have the skills to play consistent AFL-quality football. The amount of times we turned the ball over under no pressure at all (three times in the first quarter alone) is not good enough; it will hold us back until we get rid of the stragglers in the side who cannot kick.

I don't know, I think Roos' game style is at odds with the club's need for off-field prosperity. I understand this is all necessary to weed out the bad from the good, and create good habits and a consistent game plan, but this is as ugly I've seen the club play over a period of time, and it's turning people away.

The club needs a win. It's a double-edged sword atm. I'm not sure the club as the flexibility to be playing this sort of footy. It desperately needs 6 wins this year.

We need to worry about becoming a good footy side, not pleasing the theatre-goers. Roos is instilling the fundamentals into this team, something we have lacked since Northey. It doesn't look pretty at the moment but the foundation is being laid for the future, no point pining for the days of free-flowing bruise-free footy, we've been there done that. We can look good doing that, can even get to a GF (2000) but would never win one.

Wasn't exactly a spray (Terlich against GWS-style) but he pulled them aside and had some not-so-quiet words to both of them. He looked exasperated and just didn't know what else to say. He was pointing to each of them then a spot on the flanks so I assume it's either where they had each stuffed up/failed to go when it was their turn or where they were meant to be positioned and weren't.

If Howe feels hard done by, he has no idea what is going on around him. Jogging from contest to contest is totally unacceptable. Not a single second effort from him all night.

Frawley's marking efforts were terrible. All night he just tried to push his opponent under the ball and then mark the ball at waist height. I liked the idea of throwing him forward but I think he needs to go back again.

Love Tyson's strength at the contest and quick hands, can really see the Black comparisons, Viney is see ball get ball, Salem is class and tough at it. We have something to look forward too.

As the coach said we can't afford to release the pressure during a game, the players that make it through Roos time at the club will set us up for success don't worry about that.

Frustrating to see Terlich and Watts out there. One has a crack but f**ks it up terribly, the other barely raises a sweat or makes an impact but has great foot skills. Arghhhhh.........

Our improvement in being competitive is there to see it is now our offensive inability that is stopping us winning games. We held our own at the stoppages against a great inside side tonight. We ran hard defensively to limit the damage. Aside from Pederson and Matt Jones not many realise you need to run hard the other way as well when you have the ball. I expect that will come over the next 4 weeks as we weed out those that lack the required effort. I expect the lesson may start with both Watts and Howe dropped and Byrnes not too far behind.

Agreed. And would much prefer to see the ball bottled up in congestion than sailing over the opposition goal umpires head every 2.5 minutes. We still have leaky patches, but the days of bleeding goals for quarters on end are coming to an end.

Daniel Cross - Does not waste a possession. Sums it up in a heartbeat. Knows his limitations. Huge workrate.

Jack Viney - Must embarrass some older 'leaders' at this club. Is an absolute bulldog. Workrate, effort, guts, take them on. Pleasure to watch.

Jamar - Needs to clunk a few. Hopefully will warm into it, but a good start first up.

Rohan Bail - Casey bound.

JW - Ditto

Georgiou - Bit of mongrel and serviceable

Vince - Needs to have more influence with less possessions.

Tom Mc - Building into a solid bookend.

Dom Tyson - Silk

JKH - a player. Not blistering, but makes up for it with a bit of inside ability

Dawes - love his leadership and workrate and effort.

M Jones - OK tonight but needs more tricks

Byrnes - good finisher, but horrible handball turnover in the 3rd. Salem and JKH should squeeze him to pension day.

Pedo - I have been a knocker, but serviceable, and puts his body on the line.

JW - all at sea when opposition have the ball. Can't bee-line to a player that is likely to get the next possession. No real bonefide attempt at smothering.

Dunn - flourishing under Roos all year.

Jetta - doing more than I thought he could ever do.

Howe - much better than his output.

Our effort and intensity around the contest tonight seemed really good. The Swans poor disposal percentage was due to our defensive pressure.

But bloody hell the Swans ran off half back, and ran away from stoppages with more ease and regularity than is believable. You could see it coming every time we didn't take a mark across half forward - they just swept in away via Shaw, Rampey, Jetta etc....

Our kicking at times is embarrassing. Viney in particular needs urgent kicking practice.

Matt Jones was outstanding tonight - great game. Likewise Pederson.

Watts was again lame, and that easy hands out in front mark he missed in the frist quarter took the wind out of the Dees sails - I was right near it and the look on team mates faces was both shock and deflation.

The entire midfield need handball practice - STOP HANDBALLING TO STATIONARY TARGETS!!!!!

We lack class. Especially up forward, but also an outside running classy midfielder who can run, carry and deliver with efficiency and high frequency.

You can see where we're heading though: N Jones, M Jones, Tyson, Viney, Salem, with Cross and Vince to guide them over the next year or two, plus hopefully Toumpas to add in, maybe Michie and/or Riley as well. It's coming together in that regard, albeit slowly.

The swans had no trouble sweeping the ball out from our forward line. i thought quite a few of the Swans kick ins and passes out of the backline went through Jack watts opponents who were usually running well ahead of him, anyone else see this? I dont understand why our players cannot man up better than what they have been doing?

I am amazed that we do not seem to be able to find crumbing forwards who can hop in front of or at the back of the pack, swans were able to knock it away from Frawley and Dawes all night long and have their players successfully crumbing? where were our forwards?

Salem nice start to hopefully a long and fruitful career with the Dees.

Lastly the umpires, we got caught last week with holding up ablett because some coach complained about tagging. This week holding the ball was a hit and miss affair. and god knows what happened to the incorrect disposal rule, i.e. throwing the ball, dropping the ball, etc. It makes it damn hard for teams to play good footy when the rules change from week to week or from game to game across the same weekend.

This season to date except for west coast we have been in matches even though our skills let us down.

This in itself is a huge improvement. We will continue to get better this season and more so once we have another player clean out.

The tide is turning but very slowly.

I thought Matt Jones was great tonight, Pedo at least contested for the ball and yes he did his usual stuff ups but not as bad as other weeks, McDonald is a great defender but I hate when he has the ball. His disposal is shocking. Dawes just runs his guts out and doesnt give up, I wonder if he goes home and puts on the 2010 grand final just to put himself in happier times.

Howe, I wonder whats going on. He got put forward tonight and he isnt doing his lead up anymore. Took a nice mark but needs to do more.

Dunn I thought just worked hard and played really well. Frawley didnt have it his own way tonight.

TGR I agree with a lot of the above but I cannot agree with comment on Jamar.

The main thing I went to watch tonight was Jamar, Yes he got a lot of tap outs but 95% of them went straight to Swans players.

Their midfielders must have thought it was there birthdays.

Watts you wasted too many words on him.

And what really shytes me is these two have the skills that the side is crying out for. We have a dozen hard working journeymen trying to win the ball, if only these two were there to receive it more often. It seems to me Watts is avoiding engagement. His confidence must be shot to pieces. Howe needs a run on the ball to get him involved
