Demons season opener v Saints

dee-luded

None of those has had a season of AFL footy as promising as Jones' 2013.

I'd argue Trengove's first year was better than Jones'.

His second year most certainly was.

Even though there is cause for hope for the first time in a long time, I am going into Round 1 with absolutely no expectations.

Id advise everyone else to do the same

Still excited though ;)

Omg. I am.

I want your namesake to dominate!

I have high expectations.

Thought the saints had recruited neeldy based on How they went last night, and I reckon we are some way ahead of gws for the moment so look out

As I said, perhaps I am being tough on Trengove. Higher expectations might have crept in to that analysis.

The point is that whether Matt Jones is 6th or 7th in line right now is irrelevant, he is in the mix for the midfield and if Watts and Toumpas want to be thought of ahead of him - they should string some games together the way Matt Jones did last year.

I'm excited heading in to round 1 for sure. Half decent coach, new players, and older players have taken very well to Roos (Neeld rarely ever had the players' imo).

But let's not forget the past 2 years for round 1, we thought we should win. Got done both times by big margins. So i will reserve celebrating a win, when the final siren goes. But not before then.

Not sure that we would win either of those games but agree So i will reserve celebrating a win, when the final siren goes. But not before then.

Bruce - was BOG first 3 weeks and early Brownlow favourite then was driven into the ground by a Guerra tackle in the opening minutes, did his shoulder and never really regained that form for the rest of his career.

Exactly correct Dr G. I spoke with his father about that a few years later.

You're not being tough, just wrong.

Trengove was certainly behind Jones after their respective 2013 seasons.

I am waiting for Trengove to demand he be talked about with Nathan Jones, Vince, and Cross in the same way Viney established himself last year and Tyson looks set to do this year.

Agreed.

i was merely responding to your declaration that Trengove had never had a year to match Jones 2013, which wasn't correct.

This club desperately needs Trengove to fulfill his potential. I reckon he has a lot of talent and he now has an environment for it to flourish.

Does anyone know if the practice game next sat against the hawks is on TV?

It should be on the Dees websites once its completed like last year when we played the saint down at Casey.

I don't want to speak to soon but considering the Saints got smashed by the Giants in the NAB game yesterday it looks like the old St.Kilda team we have seen dominant over the past few years are over. They have been slowly sliding down the ladder over the past 2 years and I think this season they will hit rock bottom.

I know its only a NAB game but you shouldn't be losing by that much 2 weeks before the new season if your going to be competitive at the start.

They could be the 2014 wooden spooners

But I'm sure there are people on here who will argue against that.

gotta bear in mind with trengove against the cats, he was only on-field with just over half the game.

so to pick up 13 possessions with over 90% efficiency and a fair few score involvements is actually really great.

According to AFL website he played 76% game time, a bit more than "just over a half". Trengove is a player that needs to find the rhythm of the game.He did that against Richmond but not so much against Geelong who play a more manic offensive and defensive style. He will work hard to lead into space to present and then hand off and then go again. The ground and conditions the other night were not tailor made to that play. He will look alot better on the expanses of the G where he can use his smarts to work into the broader spaces.

I thought Port were a given for bottom last year and Brisbane and the G were not chance the year before. Roos or Roos I would take nothing for granted for Round 1.

I know the NAB cup is rarely an indication of the season proper, but almost every sign points to St Kilda being in a lot of trouble this year. They lost a lot of senior players over the break, they've lost more to injury, and they're just at the start of a re-build with an untested senior coach at the helm. Getting flogged by the Giants wouldn't be doing much for confidence in the playing group either, and Dees fans have seen first-hand how poisonous this can be for team morale.

It's going to be a long few years for the Saints. I would be shocked if they won more than a handful of games this year.

Agreed, can't stand the flogs. Will gladly watch any other team in the league suffer miserably without direction for years, just as we have been the laughing stock of other teams for the best part of 5 years.

It'll be great to tell them to get stuffed when they go grovelling for a priority pick.

Always had a bit of a soft spot for the Aints being a bayside dweller but they are seriously a very odd club.

I said last year I expected them to slide in 14 and see nothing to dispel this thinking. Much pain awaits this lot.Might cause serious harm as well. Don't take much to cause them to implode.

Their culture has been irrepairably terrible for years. They couldn't have handled all the awful player indiscretions much worse if they tried. And the entire St Kilda schoolgirl incident...

And that ridiculous music video they did last year. Truly bizarre stuff. Not sure what's in the water down bayside way...

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
