Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

What I think/hope round one will look like

FB: Georgiou-Frawley-Dunn

HB: Grimes-McDonald-Terlich

C: Watts-N.Jones-Michie

HF: Trengove-Dawes-Toumpas

FF: Howe-Hogan-JKH/Kent/Blease

FOL: Spencer/Gawn-Vince-Tyson

INT: Viney-Cross-Fitzpatrick

SUB: Blease

Don't think Roos will play JKH straight away so Blease will probably hold the small forward role IMO

Which in turn would make Byrnes or Bail the sub (if Blease isn't). But I think JKH is in with a chance with a strong performance against the hawks. His training form and efforts haven't been like a first year player and that's why I'd give him a shot.

Besides that pencil in the pencil Jake Spencer as ruck. His play against Geelong has all but got him that role. 1 or 2 of Gawn, Dawes and Fitzy are fighting for the left over spots.

Jack Viney probably has the odds against him to get in but if he plays Saturday that can change. Otherwise another of Bail, Byrnes or Matt Jones are in line for a game.

Lastly we can't discount Clisby or Strauss with a good performance down back.

Id put Watts and Michie before Viney at this stage,as he is still a developing kid with limited preparation, and will be used with stints in the forward line,as Roos has already mentioned, just like Toumpas.

michie's played 1 afl game

He isn't match fit - but he is already an established pure midfielder with instincts for the footy in close - he is ahead of Watts and Michie.

I must have been watching different games over the last couple of weeks. How anybody could seriously suggest leaving out Watts in round one I can't imagine. He is already in our half dozen most important players, now he has a defined role and knows he has full confidence of the coach and his team-mates. He is critical to the implementation of our gameplan.

And he will get better every game as he gets used to the new environment. He is a potential A-grader just waiting to burst out into a stellar year, and this is the year it will happen.

I will re- run this post in September just after our first final in seven years where one J Watts was BOG.

This thread is about the stkilda game ....round one.

Michie is ahead of viney at this stage.

Nothing to do with where the players are rated.

I think you have comprehension issues; I am saying that right now - Viney is a better mid than Watts and that if he can get some match fitness next week and impress the coaches in the 20 days before Rd 1 he will be more important in the middle.

Nowhere did I say Watts would not, should not, play Rd 1 - in fact I have said that he could be an extremely damaging outside mid.

Ironically, you have gone to the other extreme with this hyperbolic explosion about Watts; he WILL have a 'stellar' year, is a potential A-grader, and this kicker - 'he is already one of our most important 6 players.'

Jones, Frawley, McDonald, Garland, Vince, Cross, Tyson, Trengove, Grimes, Clark*, Viney, Hogan, and Howe all say 'Hi'...

Friendly bunch of blokes.

It has everything to do with it - I said if Viney can get his match fitness up to a point that puts him into contention - he is more important in Rd 1 and beyond than Watts and Michie.

Hasnt played a game yet this year, and you say he is more ready for round one than Watts and Michie?

Im glad you arent in charge of the club, and i rate Viney, who is one of my faves, but no use rushing anyone in who is not ready.

Roos is smarter than that.

Would have said the same last year...

However with Tyson and Cross now in the midfield, Viney is not an auto lock for round 1 based on fitness.

His form will dictate whether or not he plays round 1.

Michie has impressed me enough already to earn a spot in round 1. Great pickup.

Poor kid. So if you were running the club, he is no chance? Try telling Jack that.

Watts and Michie will play Rd 1.

But if Viney plays against Hawthorn he is a chance to show.

Agreed that Cross and Tyson ease the demands on Viney.

Not saying he isnt a chance.

Just saying Watts and Michie are ahead of him at this stage, which is a fact you still dispute.

Personally i hope Viney tears it up against Hawthorn and is picked in the side that will also certainly include Watts and Michie.

Viney is hungry and ready for AFL now I'd hate to be the one who told him he would be developing at casey

He is also coming off a hip injury.

I am talking about Rd 1.

If Viney plays against Hawthorn and can show his fitness levels are up to scratch he is only behind Jones, Vince, Trengove, Cross, and Tyson from midfielders picked at selection.

Nowhere have I said that Watts and Michie won't play.

I agree with you rpfc I don't think Viney has proved he should be in the team in preference to ones you have mentioned.

Hopefully under Roos we will have a list that has a higher talent level and players will not be just gifted games because there is no one else.

Recent form , intra club and NAB challenge have Watts and Michie ahead of Viney as midfielders , averaging more than 20 possesions each.

Viney....no recent form to speak of.

Lets hope Jack Viney has a great game v the Hawks so he can be considered for rpund one rpfc.

Alexis Georgiou

Wrong, he lost his feet for no apparent reason on a couple of leads which allowed his man easy uncontested mark out in front...... He slapped himself on the leg both times it happened, so he knew he stuffed up. Not that I'm concerned, I reckon he'll be a gem, but not 1 player was perfect & without mistake on the night. Just ask then or Roos & I'm sure they'll say the same.

Not proven yet bb IMO.

If we stuff up Jack Viney we may as well fold. His very first game against Port he showed what he can do. A positive against Geelong was that we matched them in clearances and centre clearances. Having a better back up than King in the ruck will give us a bit of a boost. And as much as Geelong missed Selwood within a year or so at least at clearances Viney will consistently show his worth. Especially now we have the 4 new midfielders for support. Viney and Jones were our only clearance winners last year.

if you are talking about fitness you did not make that clear

if viney is declared fit, there is no way he takes a backseat to michie

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
