In all seriousness though must we have unconditional fawning and worship of players ? For mine they need to earn respect and admiration.

As a person..dont know dont need to dont want to. Goes for all really as im not looking to extend my social sphere with player buddies. I just view them ad players. Whilst at Melbourne 1 would hope they seek to maximise the opportunity and play to their fullest abilities.They are after all professionals ( i wonder with some ) and as such id want honesty in efforts.

Col Sylvia was one of the mist divisive players to have ever found their way onto our list. There was the talented Sylvia, put in an occasional cameo, there was the Larrikin Sylvia, never far away and the laconic Sylvia who seemed the one most often in the jumper at games.

This guy seemed permanently in cruise mode and all on handy coin.

Yeah...lets build a shrine for the bloke..over to whoever can be bothered.

Hey bb, can you clarify what you mean by "divisive"? Do you mean he was divisive within the club or that he divided opinions among supporters? Two very different things, although you could mean both.

I get your point.....Just don't agree with the idea that when a player leaves us for whatever reason, posters are over the moon when they fail at another club....Just have a look at the Mitch Clarke thread......Posters are happy that a player is injured and bragging that they picked this....I find it rather pathetic.

There is a certain amount of petty schadenfreude in this for Dees supporters but there is also a dislike for being force-fed BS, and that is what we got with this nonsense about the need for a 'different environment' that through some convoluted reasoning has meant being at a different AFL club over the Westgate.

I don't think many of us mean him ill will, we just appreciate people being level with us.

And not many of us have seen that with Clark.

I liked Col as a footballer initially when he played for Melbourne,

I originally thought he had the ability to have a break out season, (each season),

But as each season came went I became more and more doubtful and disillusioned .

Col like others failed to deliver for our club through one of our darkest periods

So as I said once before in another thread I'm not Celebrating on the outside, but smiling just a little bit on the inside, Karma is certainly a (Bi-tch ) .

It gets you eventually one way or the other.

In saying that I am sure Karma has something even lined up for me in the future .

An acquaintance of mine knows Colin very well. He has told me over a number of years, that he is a lovely bloke, considerate and respectful of others. This is consistent with other comments about meeting him at off field events.

He has decided to retire which is probably a sensible decision. His career at Freo did not work out. In this case, the irony is that he went from a very poor football club to a very good one. He may not have worked hard enough, however, he was up against it when you look at Freo's list. At Melbourne we seem to have turned the corner and we are seeing some guys who were getting games who are now struggling because of the improved list.

However, for many years Col was a loyal Melbourne man during the desperate years of failure of the club on and off the field. He like many others over the years failed to live up to his potential. Perhaps as others say he was a lazy footballer or to put it more kindly, did not work hard enough. However, he is not on his Pat Malone. There were many others in that stable of underachievement. However, does that make if okay to pass snide or contemptuous comments about him. He has already achieved more than most on the sporting field. He has failings like anyone. What satisfaction is there in pointing these out. I don't get it. Would some of the posters on this site make these criticisms to his face. I suspect not. We should congratulate him on his footy career and wish him well.

Drafting players who had the wrong mindset, a coach in Bailey who by all reports did not push them hard enough (along with a lack of on field leaders thanks to the list policy at the time of Daniher) and then a coach who pushed the already fragile minded players far too hard... so hard that he forced himself out.

Anyway, it actually, finally looks as though that dark age is in the rear view mirror. But that is the kind of environment that Sylvia played the majority of his career in - one where he wasn't pushed and wasn't the kind of guy to push himself. Just my view.
