Or we could have kept both picks to draft 2 "ready to go in 2013" 18 year olds.

Even if it meant risking the services of Dawes: "Toumpas, Wines, Grundy, Viney" looked a lot better than "Hogan, Toumpas, Barry, Viney".

And it still does now.

the only way would be to not get Hogan and hope GWS didn't bid on Viney or take Toumpas or Wines

Fair call! Should-a could-a would-a doesn't get us anywhere. We have a plethora of mids, we are getting our hands on the ball more. The rest is elementary.

Only time will tell Sassy.

Lets get Hogan on the track and fully fit first. And not just that, we need to be able to deliver the ball to his advantage or into his lead much more efficiently than we've done in the last 7 years if we're to see him become that dominating forward we're all hoping for. What a relief it will be to see him running around and fit.

Toumpas is a WIP. He just seems a half yard behind AFL pace (both across the the ground and speed of disposal) at this stage. However, we wont really see his likely potential i believe until he has 60 to 80 games under his belt. He is showing glimpses of real class though which is a great sign. Being a long suffering supporter ive seen many early bloomers in the past fall by the wayside. Along with many other youngsters in our team he'll need to take many steps up from here over the next 2 or 3 seasons to compete effectively at AFL level week in and out against the very best.

To all those ^^ posters who say we should have kept the pick we used for Dawes: wasn't his injury problem at Collingwood related to his hand, not his knee of calf?

And had we kept the pick, we have had such a fabulous record of using our high picks (or at least perhaps in "developing" them) who knows who we would have picked and what would have become of them?

Melbourne IMO should continue to trade until they learn how to use the high draft picks

Its an apalling record We need ready made players not skinny kids or bean poles who take 10 years

Early picks are only as good as the development & culture a club provides....

How many of our failed picks from the last 6 yrs would be still playing in other clubs.. Eg haw, Sydney, Coll

Morton was not even in the top 10 in running @ WC but was a top 5 for us!

Despite the fact we weren't able to get Grundy. Maybe if you said "Toumpas, Wines, Broomhead and Viney."

Even then, there's a very high chance GWS would have been happy to use one of their top 3 picks on Viney, and made the bid.

And Hogan v Wines is far from decided, especially when blue chip forwards are much harder to find than mids.

Overall, a poor appraisal.

Yes, hindsight is 20/20, and it would seem simultaneously premature.

We had pick 13, Grundy was taken about 17. How were we unable to get him?

It may have been part of the Hogan/Viney deal...all things are not always as they seem.

Thats rubbish imo. Viney was not worth a top 2 pick. Shoot me down but clubs did not rate him that high.

It's not that they didn't rate him, it's what they knew we were willing to pay.

We would have paid with Pick 3, but thankfully we got into the Hogan deal which got us a bookend and secured Viney.

Oh no, here we go again. The knowledge our supporters possess is unbelievable. How you don't get a gig running your own AFL Club is amazing.

    It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.
