Remember leading teams is about leadership throughout the team. It's about ownership of the teams destination and so on. It's not just a method for finding leaders but also for developing them.

Either way Grimes and Jones stand out in so many ways - the way they play, the type of players they are, the way they train, the way they behave off the field, age and experience level and so on that it doesn't matter if you go by leading teams, common sense or any other measure they look like they will be captains. If Grimes was never moved from half back so much these last couple of years he'd also have a better playing record that might've silenced some critics.

However, I must confess to agreeing, I don't think Jones should be our next captain (but he might well end up as it). I honestly don't think he is a natural leader, he is more of an introvert. Yes he leads by doing, but in an ideal situation he would be one of many mids that lead by doing. That's where we are aiming. He's been seen as a leader largely because he's done more than others, as evidenced by his two B&Fs. I think Grimes and/or Garland should be captain, with Viney groomed to take over in about 3-4 yrs.

Our best captain of recent times was an introvert in James McDonald. He had the respect of the players, and the entire competition for that matter. Jones doesn't need to be captain to lead so that's one reason why it doesn't need to be him, there could well be someone that gets more out of it and becomes a great leader for the club.

But he remains for me to be our best option in the midfield brigade, we have Mitch as a forward option (but he needs to focus on staying out there) and Garland as a smokey in defense who really came into his own as a footballer and a leader last year.

I'll be surprised if Jones isn't at the very least a co-captain.

You're usually on the money GV but I'm a traditionalist and I can't see more than two skippers.

Also, I can't see Jack Viney coming into the group this early based on some of Roos' comments about giving young players time to earn their places in a team. It would follow that unless a player's exceptional, then 20 years of age is too young for the job.

He didn't exactly have a Joel Selwood-like debut year but he's definitely our version. We're a young team, having a younger representative on an eight man leadership team might make some sense. Co-captains is likely but I like the idea of Clark strutting out of the change rooms as one of our captains. Grimes is a good all round player who does and says all the right things off the field. Jones deserves to be a captain as he will lead us by example and has two Blueys to back him up. What we're missing and what the MFC has often lacked is sex appeal. Mitch Clark, is the antithesis of the traditionally conservative MFC stereotype. Fit and firing, those around him walk taller. I want him leading our team.

I hope not. Let the kid develop his footy before you put the weight of expectation on him. I know you're not suggesting that he be captain but we've just seen Trengove and Grimes impacted by leadership and we shouldn't make the same mistake with Viney.

and because of a so called failed experiment, "son your too young to be in the leadership group".

I'd love to see Clark as a skipper, however with his injuries i can't see it happening. It will be a stressful season for Clark i reckon, with the constant query in his mind if he'll get re injured. The club won't want to take his focus away from just getting back on the park and staying there.

My tip? Three captains:

• Grimes - no way they'll demote him, he would have stood down if it was on the cards
• Jones - he's our clear on field leader and more and more an off field spokesperson, also has put his hand up - the stuff about him being an introvert is a furphy
• Garland - loves the club, determined, intelligent and played his best footy last year when it would have been easy to go missing - the mark of a leader

I thought the same about Trengove. I still think he has tremendous leadership ability.

Let's just let Viney worry about his footy first and learn a thing or two from the past as Bob has suggested.

The Viney leadership question is an interesting one. If a 19/20 year old Joel Selwood was at Melbourne would we expect him to be in our leadership group? Does Viney have the on-field ability and the natural leadership skills of Selwood. I'd probably suggest he's a little behind in terms of on-field ability but his natural leadership skills seem to be of a Selwood level. Views on leadership are changing every decade. What's the point of having 8 or 9 members of a leadership team if we're not going to have different age levels represented? Should young players simply know their place or should they be encouraged to have a say in team meetings, reinforce team rules on the park and feel like they're contributing to the culture and direction of the club?

Quite frankly IMO the next captain of this club should be someone who displays hardness, grunt, courage and will never back down. Enough of the same old future of our club, glamour boy, pin up of the club. If this club truly wants to be a hard club and a tough club, then having a captain that displays this will help immensely.

Not necessarily. Nathan Jones .. Mitch Clark Chris Dawes anyone who will stand up and pull the team with them. Whoever it is just needs those qualities in my opinion
