How much football have Demonland members played?

I played from Under 9s until Under 19s. Most of my footy was played on the bench, forward pocket and wing.

My main game was baseball but played plenty of school footy as well as VAFA as a ring-in for Old Trinity thirds in my early 20s.

I possessed the marking skills of Dawes, with the speed of Gabelich, the courage of Cale, the foot-skills of Eishold and the physique of Mick Nolan.

I played Juniors, school football at St Pats College Ballarat, then senior/reserve football in the Hampden League.

Now playing football for the Malaysian Warriors in The South East Asian Competition. Good competition with a lot of expats, we play games in different countries every month and have some pretty strong rivalry.

I recall one of players spinning out of pack and promptly going doing like he had been stabbed - and he limped off the ground with a little pocket knife jammed in his thigh. Needless to say  - game called off and Mazenoid removed from the competition.

We had a player who played for our school with his arm broken and in plaster - he wore a long sleeved jumper and a glove to hide his plaster cast - you did not want him behind you going the big spoil.

Underage only. U12s-U16s in WDFL long ago. 

I kicked a goal from the top of the goal square after taking a mark in my first ever game. And then had half the team just behind the man kid on the mark screaming my name to kick it to them so they could score instead. Little faith...

It was my first mark, first kick, first goal. 

I'd go on and be lucky to count on one hand how many goals I kicked during my time as a junior in footy. I wore a helmet like Nathan Burke as did half the team.

Positioned mainly on wing, half forward and of course getting splinters on the pine!

I converted from soccer in year 6 and 7 as I thought it would be easier to kick a goal.

How wrong I was... a short forward pocket that wasn't quick and didn't want to get involved in a contest, kicked 3 behinds in my first season including 2 in one game.

Played juniors kjfa - won 2 flags lost won played three in a row 13's 15's .

played 16 18s seniors till 30 ( missed a few seasons when playing music/ partying ) eastern districts 3rd / 4th division tough footy more so as a skinny half back flanker until around 21 when i put some weight on . 

Club had to choose 2 under 25's to do a preaseaon tryout with the dogs 96 , i was chosen didnt go shoulda although  the other guy made the very last cut but ended up at the tiges on a sup list then divi 1 edfl , he was ten times better than I .

came to OZ as a 10 quid tourist aged 5

Turned up to School and asked who I barracked for so said Melbourne as I figured there had to be a team called Melbourne. I didnt even know what footy was then  til the weather got a bit cooler and then it was kick to kick at school , waxing on the footy ground with ya mates.

Seemed I had a bit of flair   and eventually represented my school  at FF.  We used to get visits from our zoned VFL  club. This being Hawthorn. I was tutored and mentored  as a kid forward by some hack called Hudson, could play bit Im told.  some big kids called  Knights and Mathews also ran clinincs. Not sure whatever became of these blokes

Used to play a little with a local club also and they were under Richmonds zone...Different side of the creek I think.    Somehow my good mate Al and I  ended up playing for the Toiges... got to run out on the G and everything...   ahhh  Little League...dems the days     So technically I might have been on a Richmond list.   I'll claim that

Moved to Sydney and footy was ....well , If you think its a novelty up there now...back in 71/72 it was poofter-ball !!

Back to Vic in 72  out of sorts with footy though still loved it.  School training was a bus ride away so stuff that for a joke. Mainly played Basketball  representatively for many years til one of the school  coaches sprung me in PE  playing footy...a little better than he was led to believe.  So for a little while in latter school days I got to play both sports...But mainly played 2nds   and in the Ruck. Hated it Hate rucking. .Played a couple of 1sts games as a HF flanker ( thats FLANKER !! ) When we played inter-house footy though common sense prevailed  ( not sure why ) and I returned to the fwd line..well CHF

Had occasion here to play against Andy Moir.  His shoulders are good for a lift up btw 

Played a little footy at uni  and some local  burb-ball as well.

71/72  I went to Greystanes High in Western Sydney. It was known amongst  the League Playing Fraternity as PoofterBall

those of us that chose to play it would be relegated to some agricultural paddock or similar to fend for our selves...No posts  ..no umps..lol

Lepers had it better than anyone wanting to play Footy !!

Played junior footy in Victoria (moved lots with Dad in the military) before we moved to Queensland when I was 12.

Made Qld rep teams throughout my teenage years and played Teal Cup (national U17s) with Voss as our skipper and the likes of Aker and Clark Keating while playing against blokes like Justin Leppitsch, Nigel Lappin, Peter Bell and Fraser Gehrig. Did my ACL in the last game of the tournament that required a full recon which I never fully recovered from. Heartbreaking moment when Richard Griffiths (now at GWS) who was the Dees recruiter at the time came over and inquired about my knee. My god, the Dees recruiter knows my name!

Played semi-professionally in the QAFL for a few years after before I finished uni and travelled overseas to play some games for the North London Lions (UK) and Boston Demons (US).

Just as an aside really  but it was my little contribution to educating the great unwashed up there I did play some school rep league.  I had a particular quality , or trick up my sleeve being an ex-Vic who grew up  playing footy in the 60's and whose idol was a Melb player wearing #8.  Like any kid  I loved to pretend I could drop kick a ball just like Taz. Of course I couldnt, but I could drop kick a ball and easily kick it around 35-40m even as a 12/13 year old

Now what used to happen was around/after  the 4th tackle if we were still on the wrong side of the 25 y line  The 'rule' was to get it to me . Id always try to get myself near to  being somewhat dead in front of the sticks.  They were only drop goals...and one pointers but this was schoolboy footy and 3 or so of those was a handy thing.

This of course worked well  till the other schools twigged.  I got carried off a few times..lol ( thought wasnt laughing at the time as I recall )

A funny story I've posted here before was I have two brothers, the youngest one was a bit premmy and uncoordinated but had a go nonetheless.

The youngest one was playing at Full Forward against Powelltown and his opponent was Sean Charles.

So my brother at FF kicked zero and Sean at fullback kicked 5 lol!!

 

A strange fact about the Powelltown ground was it was on a massive slope, on the side of a mountain from memory. I once kicked the ball far side of centre and it rolled all the way down the ground for a goal

Played rugby union... then dropped to the Cross Country team.... 

My real strength is supporting.

A few games for the local primary  in grade 6, the most memorable part of which was having Richard Osborne as a team mate.  Another game for the Blighty Redeyes fourths when filling in to help out my cousins,  and that was it for me. Like BB, basketball was my game as a teenager.
