The one sure way to improve percentage is to improve the win column. Don't let the language confuse, it's no insight, this is Roos spin. He's looking for wins.

Of course he is, who wouldn't be?

But he is saying, or spinning, that percentage is a good indicator - as it is. So is quarters won.

And it's not insight, and nor is wanting to be 'competitive' weakness.

It's all just talk.

It will be interesting to see how everyone reacts next year when we lose.

In the past it's been a simple task of blaming the coach, but who is going to cop the blame now that we know that we have a good coach?

Maybe the players will come under the scrutiny they deserve. Nowhere to hide this time.

I won't be disappointed if, after checking him out for a while, Roos anoints Rawlings as his successor.

I also got the feeling that Roos was genuinely happy with the mids we were able to bring in.

I suspect the type of mid we'll get with pick 9 won't be that far from whom we would've secured with pick 2, and he clearly rates Tyson highly. So this was a win for us in the circumstances.

Vince was clearly a complete left field bonus. And Michie - well, I think he'll turn a few heads in the next few years.

Still gaps in the list though - even though he didn't say, I'd love to know where he thinks those gaps are. He rates our bookends and has plugged some obvious deficiencies in the midfield.

So where exactly? Rucks? Half back flankers? Back/forward pocket?

Will be interesting to see who we rookie list this year (ie, whether we elect to go for some senior bodies, or go the youth track).

We dont have a shutdown back pocket. I know that's a key plank in the premiership model. We also don't have a crumbing/pressure forward of any note. Question marks over the ruck division linger.

The ultimate responsibility for a team's performance resides with the coach and the onus is on Roos as a very highly paid employee of the Melbourne Football Club to perform in his role.

If he fails and you're looking to cause and effect then you can apportion blame elsewhere and upon a number of shoulders but Roos shouldn't get a free pass because of his past deeds or his current reputation if he's not producing the goods.

I don't think even the most optimistic are expecting a break to year, 6 wins would be good 7 or 8 great.

I am, and I'm serious. I'm bullish.

We'll see.

I think the problem with a lot of mindsets is its a bit like the bookies making predictions on the following season immediately after current finishes.

Youre only looking at how everything is then, and it wont have changed much.

Ive played a fair amount of sport over my life and one thing I know is that each season offers new opportunities , new hope a fresh start. Unless every side is exactly the same then dynamics can change dramatically.

Teams that were powers lose a bloke or two...they fall back to the field very quickly, others picking up a key player allows onuses to change and a cascade of roles often to better suited people. Teams become competitive where before they werent. Optimisms and beliefs shift. Things can go from half empty to half full very quickly. :)

Summary of Part 2:

  • Draft has good talent from 1-15 so we weren't worried about sliding from 2 to 9. Enough talent through the top 15 for us to get a quality midfielder at pick 9
  • When asked which players were most exciting, he said 'it's more across the board', it's about ensuring every player maximises potential. No pre-conceived ideas
  • Looking forward to seeing how hard they work and train, and who the leaders are and who drives the group. We need to see improvement in every one of our players
  • On the fixture, Roos says that as you get more experienced as a coach you stop caring about the draw as much, so he hasn't had a huge look at it. We have to gain some respect before we start caring about who we're playing. Whoever we play is going to be a tough game, we simply need to get better
  • Every year the senior coaching role becomes more of a management role, important to have the right people with you and work with them well. You can't just fix all the problems by appointing a new senior coach
  • Most exciting thing about coaching Melbourne? 'The worse it sounded, the more exciting it got'. He sees it as a senior coaching role but also a leadership role. Wants to drive the leaders and playing group. We'll cop whacks from the media and fans, but his job is to help the players get through it and build them up. The challenge is the exciting part. Hopefully we can win as many games as we can, but it's really about the leadership and the transformation of the club and its culture
  • Says that win/loss focus are media and fan-driven. Obviously we want to win as many games as we can. Coaches can do so much, but there is an element up to the players: how will the react? Will they work hard to help the coaches implement their ideas? Too early to predict a number of wins. Says that, over the next 2-3 years he's 'extremely confident' we'll see a 'really competent' team, but he can't say much more until he works with the players. We'll put the best team on the park, we'll get them fit and disciplined, but then there's a bit up to the players to take it on and make it work.

I hope you're right but I always equate it to who you think you can beat and I don't see many that, at present, we can.

GWS, Saints, GC, Bulldogs, Brisbane and maybe Port.

Barry Prendergast.

I was being facetious; Royal was given the keys to a car without an engine.

Prendergast was one of those charged with providing an engine.

His failure can still be noted, even if we should move on from it already.

7 minutes in roughly, he hits the nail on the head. Says that there's only so much the coaches can do to get the players fit and give them a competitive gameplan, but ultimately it's up to the players to put in the work to learn their role and execute it. This has been a big failing in the younger players. They always seem to be looking to someone else to make things happen.

Well done to Burgo with these interviews. I reckon he had a raging hard-on during that Part 2 interview. (must say I was a bit chubby myself)

My view is we are going from the worst coach in AFL history (not VFL) to one of the best. Bailey got 8.5 wins in his last year. We have an easy draw. We have some good experience (Vince, Cross, Dawes, Clark, Frawley, Garland, Jones) and some good youngsters since Bailey left.

Roos biggest challenge will be to get the players to believe in themselves again, that will increase our competitiveness significantly. History suggests he is an exceptional man manager so we've every chance of seeing quantum improvement before game plan or natural player improvement is considered.

As well as the teams you mention I see no reason why you can't add West Coast, Adelaide, Richmond, Carlton and perhaps NM to that list. IMO we have a better forward and backline than most of those teams and with a viable game plan, confidence and a reconstituted midfield improvement can come quickly.

Roos and Jackson are smart enough not to generate any expectations but privately they will believe significant improvement is possible immediately.

Since there's a long way to go to the start of next season and we're all sort of dreaming (and won't remember this by Queens Birthday), why not add Collingwood to the list?

I'm being serious.

If, on Melbourne Cup Day 2012, I would have told you that Port Adelaide would beat Collingwood on the MCG in the first week of the finals in September 2013, you would all be giggling and suggesting that I be certified.

At that time, I thought Port were going to be the pits again (I thought that way when we played them in that Micky Mouse NAB Cup game at Renmark in February). I also thought the Pies going to win the flag. It's easy to be wrong this far out - especially with a flaky team like Melbourne where the group psychology has been in need of sorting out for a long, long time. If Roos can get their heads right, there's no reason why they can't roll a team like the Pies who have proved to be capable of playing inconsistent football themselves.

He'll be there at 40. He's super quick, but would rather change the angle of his run then show off. Chases hard as well.

In sentiment I agree WJ. if ladders replicated effectively with restraints as suggested by some then they'd be no change really. We know this doesnt happen.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
