Fantastic. Has taken leaps and bounds (hehe) this year and will be a real force next year with another full pre season under his belt.

Well done to the club.

2 years? Why do we bother with such short contracts.

History of knee reco's might have something to do with it.

I'd say because Max is young and who in their right mind would want to lock themselves into more than that with a team that has been on the bottom of the ladder for 6 years?

And being industry standard may also be a contributing factor.

That standard's changed considerably over recent years. If Gawn had 50 games and no major injuries it would be minimum 3 years, potentially even 4 years.

Knee injuries are a definite variable in this (IMO).

Good to hear!

And 2 years is fine, as 3 years would be lambasted and four seen as irresponsible. Oddly a 5 year contract would come back around and illustrate a great show of faith.

This is straight from the 'Fans Do Contracts: A How To' book...

Theres also the need to stagger contracts to a degree..Its a juggling act as much as anything in some respects.

This is brilliant news. A rather large cog fitting into the gear.

A mobile 208cm ruckman with better than reasonable skills decides he wants to stay. We should all be celebrating

If, and it is a big if, he stays healthy Max could become a dominant force in the league

He is also a character, that gives a club life. We need more of these

I'm stoked.

Great news. Give him a full preseason, including many hours in the gym, and his influence in 2014 will be immense. There is a lot to like about Gawn's footy. I am unsure if we can fit both him and Spencer in the team but if it is possible these two could give us a better midfield advantage. Couldn't be any worse.

Very strange question oslik! There could be several logical answers, but the one I prefer is big Max saying something along the lines of "I reckon I can be one of the elite ruckmen in the AFL in two years time, so why lock myself into a longer deal on moderate pay, when I'll be able to command top dollar in two year's time?".

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
