The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

I'd like to put faith in our new administration/coaching crew that they could finally get us a 'champion' with pick 2.

Getting 2 or 3 or 4 'never will be's' and giving a top club the chance to recruit a youngster who might go on and haunt us for years is not what I want to see.

How long is it since we last had a true 'champion' at MFC? Who was our last 'champion'?

I want to recruit someone who will draw people through the gate, play exciting and consistent football and be a top player for many years.

Other clubs have them, is it too much to hope for us to do the same?

A couple of 'good, average' players who last three or four years and then fade into oblivion is not the path I want us to take with pick 2.

If we can't get a 'great' trade for pick 2 then choose a 'great' prospect in the draft.

I don't think we are going to get a 'champion' through the trade this year, there just isn't much on offer.

Saving pick 2 for the draft is probably ideal but then again it'll probably be about two years before that player can have any kind of impact. After our last few years, we need quick improvement and the best way to go about that is to trade for two 'solid', good quality midfielders.

While a champion would be fantastic we need more than just one other player so trading for two midfielders that will come straight into the line up and be our first and third best (around Chunk) midfielders will fill the void better.

Say we trade for two of those types, pick up Cross as well and then draft some likely kids, I think we'll look a hell of a lot better next year.

Note... Possible players involved could be Ricky Henderson, Bernie Vince or Richard Douglas, all good players. As well as that, Adelaide will definitely be looking to get into the draft and have some young talent in the middle.

Rumour going around that Watters is going to get the chop in the next couple of days, Choco to replace him.

Some StKilda mates were talking about it on Facebook. So make of that what you will.

I call BS, timing couldn't be any worse.

I reckon he'll be finished some time next season at the latest.

I do find it interesting that there is a common thread here.

Neeld - gone

Watters - rumours of discontent

Buckley - rumours of discontent

All proteges of Mick Malthouse - common thread on their player management styles ?

That might be fairer but I'd prefer Seedsman who is a midfielder.

2 + 22 for 10 + 11 + Seedsman

Seedsman is a dyed in the wool Collingwood supporter who was rapt to be picked up by them and would have to be dragged, kicking and screaming out of there.

Pick 2 to Collingwood for 10,11 and Paul Seedsman - not a rumour, just an idea

He's another Caulfield Grammarian. Massive Collingwood fan. Can't see him agreeing to that. Buckley likes him too.

Yep, meanwhile the Geelong assistants (as well as Sydney) are coming along quite nicely.

Brad Scott and Guy McKenna were both Malthouse assistants also.

North haven't exactly been convincing under Scott though they have come a way.

I don't rate Bluey McKenna at all. With Ablett and they extreme amount of talent they have as well as some accomplished older players, they should probably have made finals this year, in my opinion.

We're being linked to Jarryd Lyons from Adelaide as a third party to the Polec deal. Solid prospect from East Bentleigh/Sandringham, pretty sure his father is Marty who played 27 games for the Dees in the late 70s.

you are correct just looked it up. Wouldn't want to give too much for a number 61 pick

Nice player. Can find the ball and is a midfielder/forward. Would certainly be happy to get Garry Jnr down. I'd offer pick 40 in this draft for sure. If it's involved in the Polec deal though, Adelaide might like more because I don't see how 40 helps them get Polec really.

AFL trade site reports st Kildare after pick 1. Gws reluctant to trade. We could get involved in that mix somehow.

Would not surprise me one bit; if the wheels were in motion. There's alot of change going on. Nettleford, etc. Needs to be swift if true.

As has been said, other than Steven, what do they have that we'd want?

If Watters got rid of McEvoy AND Steven, they'd be calling for the straight jacket.

Like the concept of trading 2 for a player and ending up with improved draft position as well (and if it were possible trading out a player instead of pick 22 sounds good to me if it's the right player to go).

However, the fact that names such as Elliot and Seedsman are coming up indicates how poor and lacking in imagination our own drafting was going back just two or three years ago. These two players were both cheap buys for Collingwood and now they're being considered (and quite validly so) as bargaining chips in deals that might net a draft selection as high as pick 2. The Pies have several players who have exceeded expectations when drafted.

How many do we have?

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
