The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

Recommended Posts

I posted a few days ago on the rumours about St. Kilda being in trouble and, despite the positive spin the Saints have put on their trading of Ben McEvoy, I can't accept that the trade spells anything else but that they're in a bit of strife.

So I'll add another rumour to the mill.

There's another big one to come from St. Kilda in the next few days.

If it's Stevens for Pick 2 I'll kiss you Jack.

There was an article earlier today quoting someone at the saints where they listed Fisher, Reiwoldt and Montagna as being untouchable in terms of trades. I noted with great interest that they made no mention of Stevens in that statement. Combining that with the stated goal of getting three first round picks for the upcoming draft I have to wonder if they aren't quietly working on a deal for him. He's one of the few players they have left who would command a first round pick. I'm not sure I'd be happy with us giving up our pick 2 for him, but maybe they could stack things a bit by offering us something to go with him?

Would rather wait a week to land an awesome trade than have a heap of [censored] trades like last year

Amen to that brother

We only need to look at the McEvoy trade today to see that anything can happen in trade week - McEvoy had not been mentioned anywhere and all of a sudden he is traded to Hawthorn. While we may not be mentioned as much as some would like that doesn't mean we aren't very active behind the scenes.

I'm still convinced we will get the deals done that we want and we will see some improvement to our list over the next few months.

Lets deal with facts.

We have pick 2.

Who really wants to recruit on of the best young players in the leauge?

Adelaide want Aish. Ok. Well we can give you Aish (conditional to asking GSW), how about we trade for;

Sloane or Crouch

We can sweeten the deal if you like. How about Jamar and pick 50odd aswell?

===================================

Or, if GWS are not going to pick Boyd, we can offer boyd up for trade.

Who wants Boyd?

Carlton

Bulldogs

StKilda

Brisbane

Fremantle

Ok, lets do a deal.

Carlton, how about you give us Duigan & Robinson and pick 12, for pick 2, (for example)

and so on.

Stkilda, how about a straight swap for Stevens. You might end up with another Plugger!

The trade period is [censored] stupid. Why don't they have free agency for the 1st week then trade period the next 2. Surely this is a waste of time and over indulgence by the AFL.

They should just have a trade window. None of this rubbish of getting clubs all together in the one place where journos can hang around like vultures and feed us crap.

Let the clubs just do business between themselves from the comfort of their respective cities and offices, and when a deal gets done, lodge it and let us all know.

Wow there is some rubbish around in the media. I'm lucky enough to know Walker and firstly you wouldn't meet a better bloke and secondly he adores Mick as a coach and he is playing with ridiculous confidence right now.

Now something that doesn't probaby belong on this thread (just to hard to search old ones on the phone) is our new "Josh Kennedy like" (not actually him but) midfielder we will have this year in one Jack Trengove.

Roos will be playing him on ball all year and will he modelling his whole game on JPK. Told after the meeting with Roos the whole group walked out a foot taller after they were hanging on every word they said. All ridiculously excited to start as they will be playing a lot more attacking footy this year.

Told from a mate (i know that sounds dodgey to) but he is pretty close with trenners and thinks he will be having a bumper year.

It was widely known that McEvoy was on the trade table. SEN mentioned it on Monday on The Run Home.

The saints did put something out saying they would be trading and it would be unpopular

Somehow I suspect that McEvoy isn't the only one. Considering they said Montagna won't be leaving and everyone knows about Nicky Dal I suggest it is another of their better players. No way is it Jack Steven though, they still need some decent young established players

Armitage so my mad passionate saints fan mum says!

Are there any other demonlanders out there who are concerned that what with 50,000 players out there (slight exaggeration) going left, right and centre from one club to another and the dees HAVE DONE NOTHING. They are like an inert gas!

of course, and anyone who says they aren't is a liar or in denial

1. The fact we have not done anything in the first of a multi-week period is not cause for alarm. Only Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn and St Kilda have traded players yet. That's 4/18 clubs. Just 4.

2. Inert gases actually do many things.

Well if we have the same team as last year and still are as disgusting as we were then at least we can put to bed the blame on the coaches and then be put out of our misery and fold.

But i still blame the last three for everything. Including why demonland has been playing me up forcing me to actually do some work during the day.

The bastards

I don't doubt that there will be appointments/changes, just thought we might have been a little more prominent early re coach in waiting, re midfielder appointments/trades given our year, the appointment of the messiah. Early mail indicates a preference by players to steer clear of the red and blue

Rumour is armitage is on the move from saints too, with saints keen on longer from Brisbane. Arma is a QLD boy but if he wants to stay in VIC, surely our pick 20 to Brisbane, with longer to saints good enough to snare him! Stuck behind a few blokes in saints middle, but runs all day and would fit in well here

It seems to me every available player who has expressed an interest in going to another club equates (to many here) that they are turning their back on the MFC. I have yet to hear or read a comment that these same players have said "I do not want to go to the MFC"

A news station (i think 7) said that Fisher may be part of a deal to get Bruce from GWS to the saints. Not sure how credible they are but they also said if Hawthorn recieve pick 20 as compo for Buddy (i was under the impression it was pick 18, which would go down to 19 if Dale Thomas compo is pick 11, would be traded to the Saints for the second rounder as a sweetener for the McEvoy deal.

the better value players may appear, after all the big names have been paid for?

We may already have some organised, but waiting for the appropriate time to be registered?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
