MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION

Demonland

Recommended Posts

It's a team that can get the job done, although Magner would've been well suited to this match so disappointing, again, not to see him selected. Skill level will be well below par. Desire will win this one.

...and Dunn being selected again I can't fathom.

This week is absolutely a must-win. If they lose they won't win for the rest of the year, which will mean 1 win in 2 seasons. They are NOT that bad. I don't care how many injuries they have. You must perform in winnable circumstances. No excuses.

Also, Doggies, I don't think they've played the 'G this year.

Must win. Absolute must win.

Having both Pedersen and Sellar as emergencies worries me. Could this mean one or both of Frawley and Dawes might not quite be right?

Absolutely. Dawes limped off last game. Frawley may not come up.

Sellar will probably play with Casey and Pedersen and Magner will be kept for the Dees, just in case.

That is an advantage to the Blues in their game against Casey, as all of their emergencies can play.

Looks can be deceiving. Might wish to double check this.

In the match against this year's likely grand finalist (Hawks) Rodan layed the most "effective" tackles in the team with 8. He also had 3 "effective defensive acts" which include smothers/spoils etc. He does play off his opponent a little too far IMO but then so do many within our mid field and they also tend to be lost in general play by their opponents far too easy, especially Trengove. One thing Rodan does have is pace though, and what he lacks in close checking often allows him to provide run and spread from a stoppage when we do get first use. At the same time he also contests and goes when he has to. His burst speed does allows him to close down on an opponent fairly quickly at times and pressure the ball carrier at the last minute. Sometimes it's effective and other times not so as he's given his opponent too much of a head start. And this is what fans tend to notice when we (or he) don't get first use of the ball.

Although in the 2 matches he's played, Magner has averaged 6 tackles (not necessarily all effective) vs Rodan's 4.5 average. Almost on a par here although Magner's only played 2 matches, so not much to go on this year.

I spent a bit of time watching Rodes and his direct opponent last week at most stoppages, was not pretty.

Most of our inside mid work from most players isnt pretty atm in general, as we're being dominated with first use etc going the way of our opponents. Apart from Jones, there's very few rotating inside mids atm who are capable. Rodan isn't outstanding I agree but he's more capable than our other alternatives at this point with the exception of Jones. II'd recommend you review the match against the Hawks. Obviously much better quality than the Saints. Had a fairly productive day both offensively and defensively.

I would suggest it would be fairly difficult to perform week to week given where our stocks are at. Remember Jamar was missing last week as well whereas he wasn't against the Hawks. Having our most experienced ruckman in the middle also helps.

I hear you though and certainly not saying he's anything spectacular compared to the rest of the comp. Just not one of OUR worst atm thru the middle as many here seem to believe.

Edit: Spelling & the odd missing word (from phone lol)

I think this is the least amount of changes we have made all season. If nothing else hopefully it provides the players with stability which will hopefully result in a WIN.

Something we have not had enough of.

This is a game we can win for sure; the Dogs are a weak side.

We can't afford to give them a headstart like we did with the Saints last week. Those three goals in five minutes killed us. We've kicked the first goal in a match twice all year (Josh Kennedy for West Coast has done it five times himself). I'd love to see us get the first and get a lead (even a tiny one) going, just to see how it helps our confidence.

The side is getting better. Still a few holes (Dunn, Nicholson), but with Frawley back in, we step up another notch.

The doggies play a real contested style of footy, with a lot of their goals manufactured from midfielders. If we can close Ryan griffen down (IMO he should be viewed as highly as ablett, pendles and Watson this season) and limit the influence of will minson, we will be right in this game. I'd love to see watts, Dawes and fitzy really move around the forward third and have use the mcg space. If we can get some meaningful footy to these guys one on one we can stretch the dogs defensive talls.

Looking for Howe to have a big game. He's been down the past few weeks, and I'd love to see him grab the game by the throat and give our defenders a target linking up between the arcs. He is a player who can really light up his teammates with a big mark and goal, or a run down the wing. Hope he really lifts.

Lastly, I think for the first time in a long time we can win the coaches box battle. Brendan McCartney is a good teacher of young players, but I'm yet to see him inspire or show any initiative with his coaching. I'd be looking for Neil Craig to make a surprise move or 2 that no one picks. Might be frawley on the ball, Tom McDonald to chf without a match up... I just think he could manufacture something and show some initiative to give us a really good start!

See you all there tomorrow night!

I think Cudi is insinuating the GWS & GCS wins don't count. I'd agree. So that'd be one win. Against Essendon last year.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
