There are not many clubs that have a spare $600k in their salary cap so I doubt he will get that sort of an offer elsewhere, however I think we should offer him a three year contract around the $400 - $450k mark; he will be good under the right coach and with a bit of senior player guidance.

Give him a big first year with incentive based second and third years so it becomes a front ended contract if he's playing poorly or just a decent and fair contract if he's playing well.

Take out the number 1 draft pick and what do we have.

Now the number 1 pick represents talent and also has an off field significance if he was to go. So I'm not one to say you can completely disregard that so it is worth something but we have to be objective. In terms of what we gave up he owes us more than we owe him but at the same time he didn't ask to go number 1 pick specifically or he certainly didn't demand it. The other thing to consider is we have Clarke, Dawes, Howe and Hogan whilst our midfield is weak. We also have to pay Frawley, Garland and McDonald (and Pedersen - shudders). We can't overspend on talls or third tall types. I'd hate for us to get to a position where we have a big name FA who will represent value to us and not having the cash ie. Essendon with Goddard who didn't come cheap but was certainly worth the coin for the dons at that time.

You can't really work out what is reasonable to pay one player when you don't know what the rest of the players are getting.

I use the other club theory. Example 1- equalisation : Geelongs star players agreed to $500k to keep the list together. I'm guessing that may have been relaxed in order to keep Taylor, plus Scarlett, Harley , Ling , Ablett are no longer there.

Example 2 - marque player: Hawks reportedly have offered Buddy a mill per year , plus must be paying good money for Cyril, Roughy, Hodge, Mitchell. Next bracket Sewell , Lewis ect. Then recruits like Hale and Lake sign for less to play finals.

These figures are speculation, we have Mitch on 700k, Dawes on 500k, Davey coming off a 500k contract. Even if we only pay 92.5% of the cap who are we paying the money to? I thought the 3 Jacks had their contracts front loaded so to avoid problems with out supposed superstar list?? Has Watts already taken home big coin and the next contract is to be more modest?.
