It'd be a big call, GV.

I'd certainly give away pick 2 for Shiel. Actually, I'd add a sweetener if it got the deal done. Shiel is quality. Aish is also quality, but Shiel is mature and we know he can do it in the big time.

If Shiel is contracted, we might need to give a little bit extra to get the deal done.

Put yourself in the shoes of GWS. Shiel has come to you expressing an interesting in heading back to Victoria. His manager informs you that Melbourne has put forward a very lucrative contract offer. You don't want to keep an unhappy player and see this as an opportunity to either get a mature player or spread the demographic of your young picks. What would you ask for? And what would you settle for?

I think GWS would be looking for the flexibility of pick 2. They could use pick 2 to trade on to other clubs for players that they'd want.

I think that McDonald's value to us would be higher than GWS, purely from an off field/culture POV. I don't think that they'd be happy to do a swap of McDonald for Shiel.

From a Melbourne perspective, I would do the deal. I love McDonald, but I think that the ceiling of Shiel is far higher as a damaging, goal kicking midfielder is far higher. The problem is that I would find it very hard to release a really good person from our club when we are trying to build a strong culture.

If I was GWS I would be asking for Frawley.

I think that's probably right. If McDonald is the best we can/are willing to offer them, then they're probably more likely to want Pick 2, which will open doors to other clubs and other players which probably exceed McDonald's worth.

Having McDonald made the transition easy when Rivers departed. He and Chip are both required to play on the big men, Garland again showed this year his flexibility to play on a number of differant types of players effectively. These three down back plus our forwards being fit are crucial to us being competitive. Now if Watts is in the midfield he's on a wing with Toumpas on the other so the Swans can stick their offer. I haven't seen a lot of Shiel but if he's good to go lets get him. We can become more competitive quicker than most think.

You would assume "talks starting" really means we've been talking to Shiel's management for some time and we've offered him a pretty attractive contract and now it's a matter of whether GWS is prepared to let a contracted player leave.

Just like we were never going to get Roos

Completely different scenario Mgdee. Roos didn't rule out coaching all year and actually chatted to us and showed intrest.. Adams Wants nothing to do with us at all. There are 5 clubs that are his preferred destination before Melbourne so highly doubt he will get through to 5 clubs before coming to us. Get this through your head if he doesn't want to even speak to us DONT bother with him then..

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
