I bet you Adrian Hyland reads demonland.

That article is basically a compilation of a portion of the more considered posts on the topic on this forum.

Fine piece of work. Pity it's buried in the second half of the sports section.

Meanwhile the Hun bays for blood and reinterprets every element of selection for round 18 2009 through its selective and flawed 'tanking filter'.

The AFL started the leaking on this investigation but we seem to be keeping it going and the constant drip will erode us.

Says it all........hope Vlad reads it.

Pretty good summation there. The last paragraph is a little soft considering what he has written before it, i would have mentioned courtrooms myself. But the Aged may have asked that he soften the punches slightly....

But he nails the cynicism of the whole sham well.

That article shows an ASTOUNDING about face by the Age.

Someone's had a word to them, but not the AFL, because this makes the AFL look silly.

yes, but it would have been better if it had been said by a non-demon fan

but this at least got some of those issues out into the open

Sure, but do you reckon they would have published it while Caroline Wilson was on the attack? Not in a million years.

The fact that they have published shows a complete U-turn, regardless of the perspective from which it was written. In fact, I think it comes across as very balanced and reasonable, given it was written by a supporter.

i think it's great that it was from "one of our boys".

We have all got to stand up against this bumbling farce.

Time the AFL Investigated themselves.

Did Dwayne Russell actually compared Jim Stynes to Lance Armstrong?

[censored]

Don't get too worked up by anything he says. Russell is far from being an intellect one can respect. He said prior to the 2007 Grand Final that Port Adelaide would defeat Geelong due to their 'superior club culture'. What a goose.

This is a pretty good summary of what has been said on the 'Land by some of our more considered posters. My position on this evolving somewhat. I reckon the club and the AFL should get together, smoke the peace pipe and put rules in place that ensure this doesn't happen again.

Clint, I actually agree with the amnesty bit at the bottom. Going out of your way to spend a season on the bottom via the selection table or suddenly dropping players for a particular match in order to lose does stink. Is it technically legal under the current rules (due to a lack of a specific rule)? Yup. Does that mean it is ethical or moral? Hell no. Segregation was legal in the U.S. South during the sixties. Did that make that moral?

If the rules were ensconced that team selection needed to follow X guidelines and the club still breached them, then we need to cop our fair whack. There are no such rules.

An amnesty has a precedent as I believe the AFL held a salary cap amnesty sometime in the late 80's/early 90's when it was obvious that nearly all clubs were breaching it. Salary cap breaches is/was more clear cut than these tanking allegations as there were concrete rules to abide by.

Mind you, Geelong's PR dept is a real winner, making everyone believe that their culture is pristine.

It's conveniently forgotten that Stokes was caught with bolivian marching powder, and I can tell you from personal experience he's not the only one down at Catland.

They were simply a much better outfit.

Very true Jose. Though it just wasn't a case of being a much better outfit. He shot his mouth off and proceeded to watch his beloved 'Magpies' get brained by 119 points. Great insight there Dwayne!

Yep Adrian hylands views seem to sum up what the debates on here have said for months. Great to see it out in the public eye, although not sure how sympathetic other clubs will be to the article

Great article that I believe gives a accurate summation and context of events than six months of dross regurgitated by the media to date. I find the timing interesting and the cynic in me wonders how long if at all this article has been sat on.

Fantastic article. It really is. Surprising enough that it even made it to print, but totally unsurprising that it was pushed down the back.

I liked it, but I didn't like the last line about an "amnesty", as that implies that Melbourne did do something wrong when the rest of the article highlights that they didn't do anything wrong.

I think he might have been saying that an amnesty would be called for all the other clubs he'd mentioned (e.g. Collingwood and Carlton), in that they wouldn't have to fear a future investigation, that the AFL would tighten the rules and move on into the future without repercussions.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
