So to answer a few questions.

I can't see Strauss in our best 22 can you??

So if I can't then IMV and reality says he plays at Casey AND if he does kick ins there then yes lets see some big torps.

I don't think i saw anything before his broken leg to suggest "Elite" footskills and as result have commented accordingly.

I hope he can come back and play but IMV I don't think he is quite up to it at this level!

Would LOVE to be proved wrongand maybe footy dept might rate him higher and that is the prerogative of the footy dept!

I can see Strauss in the best 22, dependent on the opposition, when you say you saw Strauss, on how many occasions are you basing this judgement, the 18 games he has played at senior level, I thought the first few would be him gaining a bit of confidence being at AFL level and then nearly another half of them are when he was returning from a badly broken leg.......I saw him through his Junior days and playing for Casey...hence my opinion

As for best 22, I think Neeld is looking for a best 30 or so, so he can play mix and match, if the opposition doesn't have many tall defenders we can throw a big fwd line at them........if we need grunt in the middle it will be Jones, Viney, McKenzie etc....if we want to spread quickly it will be Byrnes, Rodan etc

Brad Dick hasn't done much yet either.

Watched him playing for East Frei in WAFL, very lazy will not chase and apply pressure. Great when everything is going his way but lacks hunger. Not exactly Charles Atlas either

If people continue talking of having someone with 'elite' kicking back there in defence the surely keeping Tappy back there would be a better option. He is a longer kick then Strauss and adds a lot more grunt also.

I think he has a role Olisik and really liked the improvement I was seeing in him till he broke his leg in 2011. Personally I would not judge him yet but each to their own.

Ok, confused Olisik, if you didn't rate him, you wouldn't expect a pick under 20. Considering what most players went for thru this trade period I would suggest that you do in fact rate him based on a sub 20 pick.

i didn't say i didn't rate him. I said his over rated and that I would accept a pick sub 20 for him as I don't think his worth more then any player in the top 20 of the draft this year.

Granted trolling may have been incorrect wording I'm sure you're just another frustrated supporter.

I get frustrated because we write off players as not even close to best 22, and according to the elite list evaluator Olisik who would trade asap, these players are simply no good. The guy is 21, had a break that ended the career of an elite player like Nathan Brown and managed to forge some 7 games together in 2012. At the same time he operated at over 80% efficiency which no other player on our list did.

I think Strauss' has lots of flaws to work on, I think his lack of possessions based on my own vision are that he works too hard defensively that he isn't confident enough to run off his player to make play offensively. Whether this is lack of fitness or lack of confidence I am unable to tell you but I see a 22 year old Strauss far more likely to attribute to future success than Bartram or MacDonald. Even Nicholson, sadly us as Demons supporters due to years of disappointment and terrible players are drawn to a flashy fast player but Nicho is average defensively for the opposite reason to James in that he overcommits going forward. His kicking could also leave abit to be desired.

Picket I guess what I'm trying to say is take a few minutes to watch his video in the Vic Metro where he hits up Watts three times in a row and his game against Carlton where he also finds Watts with a 55m pass through the middle and you may find the reason why I think he will be apart of our future but I guess 2013 will be either his best 22 year of AFL scrap heap.

Look, I'm not sure if you know how this works, but young players have 6 months of running, training, weights, drills, intra-club matches and NAB Cup games to press their claims to be in the 22 come round 1, 2013.

We can all speculate as to who's "best 22", but a more accurate picture will emerge by late February. Until then I'd recommend keeping your powder dry and not making too many absolute statements.

Strauss has a really good kick on him; a few things I noticed at Casey a couple of years ago before the leg (the Scully game for Casey at Werribee). Howe, Tommy Mc and Strauss stood out, particularly his kicking which was pin point, low hard and accurate. HIs senior games back after the leg he hasn't taken the game on and used his kicking to advantage, in fact I found it frustrating that he tended to give off a lot when he got the ball.

Neeld has certainly showed some confidence in Strauss by offering a two year contract and must see him as part of the future. Hopefully Straussy will get some games next year and play some good footy

in his first few games didn't show much with is kicking which was a standout for why he was drafted, was quite weak one on one and in the defense, i thought we'd picked a dud, but then a few games before he broke his leg and the game he broke his leg in, won a few one on ones and attacked the game and looked to be competent player. started to find his place in the team and i thought he would be a decent player. then the break happened, a few people on here seemed to start rating him more and more and before you knew it he was one of the stars of the future. Some people seemed to start rating him more after his injury then when he was playing then when he made his come back i guess it was a bit of a dissapointment to some of these people, but i think he'll train hard and come back and start developing again like he was showing. i almost forgot about his injuries before his leg held him back as well, i think it was hip then shoulder wasnt it?

this also reminds me of one passage of play i think against carlton, he didnt slot a goal from 55m but hit a 55m pass to a running team mate surronded by 3 or 4 opposition players.

if he can build on this then he will be a fine player, especially if the backlines not under as much pressure and he has more time to kick rather then dish off a quick handball which i think happened after he came back into the senior side. having more tall targets and more structure up the field would only help you would hope.

Just drove past Princess Park and saw the boys completing what I assume was the 3km time trial. Stuck my head out the window and cheered the boys on.

Nicho and a larger figure (maybe Tom Mc) up front, Trenners, Jones and Bail all together about 50 meters back. Big mob not far behind. Did notice Pederson, Blease there also as was Watts. These are just the players I noticed.
