PLAYER NUMBERS 2013

Nice to see a thread like this rather than all the distractions:

I'd prefer to see us keep all low numbers filled and I think players should aspire to a low number and earn it.

On that basis my wish list :

1 HOGAN (If as rumoured, but I'd prefer a current player like McDonald)

2 Jones, Nathan

3 HOWE

4 Watts, Jack

5 DAWES (ox must give him the jumper)

6 WINES (keep him close to Viney)

7 VINEY (Needs to be his own man)

8 Frawley, James

9 Trengove, Jack

10 BYRNES ( next to the cap)

11 Clark, Mitchell

12 Sylvia, Colin

13 McKenzie, Jordie

14 Dunn, Lynden

15 MAGNER (deserves a low number)

16 Grimes, Jack

17 Blease, Sam

18 GAWN

19 Strauss, James

20 Garland, Colin

21 TAPSCOTT

22 BAIL

23 TYNAN

24 PEDERSON

25 McDonald, Tom

26 Nicholson, Daniel

27 VACANT

28 Macdonald, Joel

29 VACANT

30 Sellar, James

31 VACANT (I like the idea it becomes the captains number)

Sorry Rob.....I hate the idea of a Captain's number.....All the rest I can live with except Magner....Still a rookie....

yes I am with you, there is a sentimental value to following the same player in the same number through his career - I think what really turned me off all this promoting was when Jurrah got moved from 48 to 24, and hardly fired a shot after that. A curse!

Agree. The Wiz from 33 to 8 is the one that sticks in my mind.

I understand that it seems to me it removes the elements that concern others like the phantom curse or being taken by someone who leaves.

On the others the idea is if you are in the regular 22 your number should be in that area as well. A bit like the positional numbering in Soccer or Rugby.

Actually more like we think you are good enough to be in our 22 and if you aren't you should aspire to a number between 1 and 22.

I'm with those who don't like this automatic change from a higher to a lower number the player's career progresses. Keeping that high number (say in Howe's case #48) accords you even more respect as it shows you did the hard work to 'make it' despite not being a fancied high draft pick.

For the record I'd also like to see ...

#3 to Hogan (I hope he hasn't taken #1 as it's time for another great #3)

#5 to Wines/O'Rourke

#7 to Viney

#10 to Byrnes

#18 to Rodan

#23 to Barry

#27 to Pederson

#31 to Dawes (earned his stripes in it, will do it proud)

Looks like the "straight swap" of Rivers & Gillies is now complete. Rivers will wear Gillies' old number next year, while Gillies will wear Rivers' old number.

Much as I want the new recruits to earn the higher numbers, I reckon #3 would be a good fit for Viney.

Bit surprised that Dawes didn't ask for/get #31 given that was his number at the Pies and the significance at Melbourne.

# ..31 Just a number these days....

Sorry Bossdog, it will never be just a number...too much emotion attached to it. Will always be deserving of great honour in my book. Can't allow HWSNBN sully a great legacy.

BTW no pun intended with the word sully...altho I could write a gem of a poem with it about HWSNBN

To be honest, I like that the numbers are getting announced but I worry about how we have to rant on and on about who got who's number from 50 years ago. I worry that the club is to enmeshed in it's past rather than caring about the future. I could be wrong but just my take.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
