Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I want wines. In regards to having too many inside mids I think that is crap. Players aren't all stupid if they see jones/viney/wines take possession of the ball they will run and spread. Players like Morton and bennell would wait on the outside hoping we would gain possession. They would leave the task of getting the pill to others which would result in us not getting enough first ball usage. The best mids are complete mids not inside or outside but both eg:Watson. That's what we are after. Not a clearance king like Beamer who prided himself on one stat but complete mids. Jones/viney/JT/wines may give us a chance.

I'm with you CFH, people are also underselling Viney's pace because he is seen as an inside midfielder. The lad is very and agile and has a good turn of pace, not too mention he has a very good fitness base so he will have no problem linking up and breaking lines.

If he gets taken before our pick I will literally cry! I am loving this idea of the Viney/Wines midfield. Two hard edged inside mids whose toughest critics are themselves and they both thrive on outdoing each other in the physicality stakes, please let this happen football god!

The third part of the trifecta is Jones, he will be determined to stay the number one Mid at Melbourne and you will see him reach for another level next year; he's got a lot of pride and won't want to be relegated to 2nd or 3rd.

BTW I hope beyond hope they take Wines, but don't be surprised if it's O'Rourke.

Just watched the O'Rourke highlights video on AFL.com and i think this discussion is definitely worth reopening. While not as tough as Wines, he still wins the ball and his skills and creativity look top class in the video. Definitely a Pendlebury clone. Tough decision imo.

I was one of the few on here not just blindly saying we should take Wines. I still think O'Rourke will be a better player, and is more rounded. People should watch his highlights video to see him read the play, break away from packs and hit up pinpoint kicks. That is one of the key things we lack, and when I look at our midfield at present I don't see where else this skill will come from. He'd fit in well at our club because of this.

Wines or O'Rourke? Watson or Pendlebury?

Can't lose really.

I'll put my faith in the footy dept.

You've compared Wines and O'rourke to Watson and Pendlebury? Do tell me Jose', what happened to a past number 4 draft pick we had not three weeks back? I remember supporters like you comparing him to Goodes early on. We can lose, and we've lost before with early picks.

I wish supporters would stop with these ludicrous comparisons. It kills me. I'm assuming you've seen as much footage as I have of the two, which isn't much, yet you are willing to compare them to two of the top mids of our game.

From the limited footage I have seen of these two, I would prefer O'rourke. We are crying out for a classy mid with elite skills, pace and one that can still win his own ball. That's what I'm hoping O'rourke could be for for us. We have our bulldozer in Viney. Add Jones, McKenzie, Trengove, Tapscott, Rodan, Grimes and Bail.

They're all boys who enjoy getting the pill. O'rourke looks to be some silk that we are sorely missing. Pace and kicking skills complimented by an appetite to win the contested ball. The dee's need it.

I would hate it if we took Wines at #4 and then in a few years O Rourke turns into an absolute A grade gun (Which i think he will) while Wines becomes a just another B grade hard working mid.

I would hate it if we took Player X at #4 and then in a few years Player Y turns into an absolute A grade gun (Which i think he will) while Player X becomes a just another B grade hard working mid.

Decisions are made on the basis of available information.

Had a look at their highlights - they both have good attributes, O'Rourke's decision making and skills and Wines strength (which he is big enough to translate into the AFL) and smarts to be in the right place. Stringer is the standout in those highlights packages - he could be anything. Jack Viney looks terrific too though, inside ball winning and he's got pace and dynamism.

I would hate it if we took O'Rourke and he turned into Morton and Wines became Dangerfield. I think Wines has more to him than "hard working mid". I would personally choose O'Rourke but dont think we can lose either way. Both will be deserved of top draft positions.

If you read ANY of the bios on these young players, those are the 2 they are compared to.

By others, not me.

But none of us know how these 2 will really pan out.

Hence, faith in the football dept.

Not rocket science steve.

Hard for you though, I know.

Thats why I dislike statements like olisiks. Exactly the point I made.

Yep, sorry.

As a general rule, I just don't read his posts.

Obviously even when they are being replied to, it seems.

Not even our Footy Dept., unfortunately, but based on what we have to go on, both Wines and O'Rourke will make a name for themselves in the AFL.

Edit: typo.

I'd prefer wines based on the attitude and toughness that he would bring to the club. It's been mentioned that we need more run and carry players, however, with the inclusions of byrnes, barry and rodan, to go with blease and even nicholson, i think we have enough players for now to provide us with that pace. Even jones, trengove, grimes and sylvia have shown they have the ability to spread from the contest, rather than just attacking the ball. There will plenty of opportunities to pick up more outside runners, but being able to have the two best bulldozers in the one team is something that is hard to pass up.

We desperately need some genuine, long term class in the middle.

Viney and O'Rourke as a midfield combo for the 10 - 12 years should have any MFC supporter salivating, one a genuine inside gun the other pure class with loads off upside that we seriously need.

Love the look of Wines and wouldn't be the disappointed in the least if we took him but O'Rourke for mine.

I think when it comes down to the crunch Neeld's instruction would be to pick the grunt player. Also O'Rourke seems to be rated outside the top 10 by a few experts so I don't know how much debate there really is over Wines or O'Rourke. Interesting to hear others opinions on whether O'Rourke is actually top 5 talent or just the next best mid after Wines.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
