Melbourne aren't budging on a 2 yr deal, Geelong offering 3

This isn't a dig at Jamar, but I can understand Riv wanting 3-years if Russian got it.

That 3 years for Jamar might turn out to be one of our bigger fails in this next rebuild.

Melbourne won't say it and Rivers has been a fine servant, but I'm guessing that privately they won't be all that disappointed if Rivers goes. If he was a full-back or centre-half back it would be different, but he's a third tall and we have Watts, Garland and Davis that can play that role. And he spent half the year as a makeshift forward.

After the poor public relations with some other former players they're making all the right noises, but I don't think they're concerned at all. Just my guess.

This is spot on. Sadly, because he has been up there as my favourite player for years now, and has put up with enormous amounts of crap football in the latter part of his career while never dropping his head.

But you are right on - the need for him has probably passed.

I am personally not that unsettled by the prospect of Rivers moving elsewhere. A fine servant indeed and has certainly had a good year, but I don't think he's a huge loss to be honest. I remember too fondly him getting man handled by T. Cloke and his short disposal out of the backline was lacklustre. A good intercept mark no doubt, but won't begrudge either him or MFC to moving on.

Can't really agree with the above. He hasn't put a foot wrong this year, being our most consistent and reliable defender before jammed into a forward role he didn't want but performed to the best of his ability.

Will be a bad loss, but life will go on.

He's consistent but he plays pretty much the easiest position on the ground and he isn't as damaging as a Josh Gibson or Sam Fisher. He won't leave a gaping hole.

Will look terribe if he ends up at Port or Brisbane.... i can understand Geelong but one of those would suggest something is wrong

JT I think JR is exploring the options he is most likely looking at his last contract so he needs the largest salary he can get and able to play in finals if possible.

If he cannot get to a good side for better or similar money to the MFc . He will probably take the money and run.

If that happens to be Brisbane good for him.

They will go close to the eight next year.

If he got there with a sizable pay increase he would be far better off the staying at the MFC.

The MFc will again struggle in 2013, if it comes down to Port with a sizable salary increase he is still better off and they will still probably finish higher then the MFC.

You'd have to think Port would not be in his sights, unless they offer a 4 yr contract.

Its been reported that the cats have offered a 3 yr contract vs MFC 2 yrs. $s and length of contract would be big factors as well as chance of playing finals.

Don't think he's been linked to the Lions. That would be Moloney.

Not to mention, coupled with Moloney leaving, we could even accrue enough FA points for an after-1st-round-pick as compensation >> anyone interested in securing pick 5??

Even If with Beamer and Rivers going (likely) we will currently only be nett 1 down. (Byrnes) might result in a 3rd rounder. we get another FA and there's no likely compo

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't the FA week now over? Or does it just go on and on?

It goes on til a week out from the end of the month long trade period.

Or something similar to that.

Minus the points lost through getting Byrnes and any other FAs.

Byrnes FA points = Moloney FA points, I would think.

No way, Moloney will easily outweigh Byrnes.

Yep FA stops a week before trade ends. Still only provides a week unencumbered trade. Personally I reckon FA should finish a week earlier still allowing a fortnights trading with all knowing where they stand. (maybe next year )

Neither is worth much. At the end of the day, they are both unwanted by their current club, regardless of brownlow votes, grand final medals, etc.

Byrnes was snapped up by Melbourne. Moloney is being shopped around to every club by his manager, and it appears no one is all that keen.

But if you say so.......

Surely if we received pick 5 for Moloney and Rivers the universe would break?

If you read the right Twits you can figure out that Rivers is off to Geelong.

Sorta figured it was always going to happen as long as they massaged him the right way.

Oh well, I enjoyed watching Riv play for us but people come and people go.

Next.

Give JR the 3 years deal at $350k to stay at MFC. 4th in our B&F and we are happy he's going ???????

I wasn't panicked 4 question marks in, but was convinced by the 6th.

Whatever shall we do?!

Yes, but the compensation probably will outweigh the benefit of keeping him.

Where do we need him? Not in the backline -- remember that he played the majority of the season as a makeshift forward, to varying degrees of success.

Barring injuries and the players we're looking to brig into the club, we won't need him as a forward.

A good player, but the effect he can have on this young squad is minimal, in my opinion, considering his admittedly not-the-best leadership skills.

He could be very good at a club like Geelong though, where he is not needed for that.

Embrace the list build.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
