WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CAMERON PEDERSEN

Was a mention on Trade Radio that North might be reconsidering their willingness to trade Pederson having lost Macintosh.

Just Barrett rambling on possibly but he did mention that they are now considering keeping him as a 'backup'.

Cam Mooney about to berate Melbourne for trading our early picks.

NM negotiating ploy perhaps? Attempting to push up their asking price.

I think its ridiculous to speculate on goal kicking. Dawes for example never kicked more than 30 in a season at The Filth, Its a big leap to think he can kick a lot more with us. His 5 years were 5, 5, 16, 30, 27 goals. Pederson would even be lower I imagine.

Mate, if I was forced to comment on every post from you that I found ridiculous I'd never get to sleep.

Yeah, the point he was making was Melbourne giving up early picks for getting experience at the expense of not picking up quality kids - he specifically mentioned picks 3,13. Wow. Guess what Cam??

We used those picks to nab Hogan/Barry and pick up Viney at 27. ie. Kids ! .........Mr.W.Anker.

By the time this trade/FA/draft period ends, excluding any rookies we add and obviously Hogan, every single player we will add will add to the side immediately, including Viney and most likely whoever we take with #4. Neeld has said to anyone who will listen that his FD collectively believe that we've got the talented youth to get where we need to be, and we're desperately short of quality mature players to help keep us competitive in the mean time.

It isn't very hard to put these two pieces of information together to establish the obvious strategy for this off-season and why it's been a success for us. I guess it's just easier for guys like Cam Mooney to resort to the "common wisdom" of draft picks = better team and not bothering to look any deeper than that.

Edit: The other thing is that even though we haven't added much youth this year, of the four we have added two are known to be absolutely top shelf and while we don't know the ID of Pick #4 yet, the chances of not unearthing at least a very good player are slim. In short, we've added class, experience and leadership. I can't believe that anyone could not view this as a success.

Perhaps he might look at his own career if he wants some measure of this youth and age issue.

He did, after realising he was about to contradict himself but he said that only he and Ottens were traded in.

The problem with all this is that the Cats 99-02 had Milburn, Hocking, Sholl, Graham, Sanderson, Riccardi, Stoneham, Burns, King, Murphy et al.

This meant that the birthpangs of the Geelong Golden Era formed in a much better environment than our present state.

Most commentators I've read put Melbourne as one of a couple of clubs that have "won" so far out of the trade period. Mooney and Denham are just trying to stand out by saying the opposite...

Tiresome crap in my book, a career in their's.

Each to their own.

I really like Mooney. I disagree with him on this issue, but I don't question his motives. I think he's just got it wrong.

But even then, we'll only know with the fullness of time.

There's nothing wrong with Mooney's angle. The top 25 or so in the draft are bona fide talent and most clubs would not be trading out picks in that region for anything. What he's not factoring in is, as Nasher mentions above, is our somewhat unique situation:

- desperate need of bigger bodies and mature players, not only to fill the void but show the younger players the work ethic, professionalism and will to win, no matter what - elite, elite, elite

- not sure if anyone's noticed but we don't really have a fully locked and loaded (thanks Terry) recruiting department. Todd Viney is hardly a recruiting maestro to date so until the Collingwood dude comes on board, we probably haven't got the absolute expertise/structure needed (yet). For me, that's just as big a reason for trading out picks

- we've got Viney, Hogan, Barry and pick 4 so as much as i was licking my lips over the prospect of Stringer (13), Graham (20) etc etc etc, I can live with it for now

In two years or so we will be the champs or the chumps

Comparing Pedersen to Newton is off the mark. For a start, Pederson has already shown that he belongs (refer to 2011 season). I had him in my Supercoach team and he was a consistent solid scorer playing primarily in the backline. The fact that he has been very effective as a forward at VFL level underlines his versatility. Newton never looked like he belonged at AFL level, not once... well apart from that mark!

Actually, Juice did look like he belonged once: for ten minutes at the Dome against North. He was on fire. He had the fabled 'Superman' logo next to his name. I turned to my brother and said 'maybe he can play'.

He was dropped two weeks later and never seen again.

I remember that game.

Drank a shiteload that day and was in the NM cheersquad.

It was fun watching our 4 goal lead dissipate into a big spanking loss.

I remember it too, I had a big night the night before in which I broke up with my girlfriend and badly injured my arm, somehow I made it to the match in a big spot of bother - little did I know that the nightmare that was my life was only just beginning

Someone has to disagree on talk back. If nobody did then it would be hell boring to listen to. Its always good to see 2 sides to the arguments.

Alot of posters here seem to be wearing demon goggles sometimes and do not consider the other opinion.

Not saying that I agree with him as I have stopped tuning in so I have no idea what he was rambling on about this time.

Rumours circulating of a 4 way trade to get Pederson to the Dees:

MELBOURNE

recieve Cam Pederson from North Melborne, lose Stef Martin to Brisbane.

BRISBANE

receieve Stef Martin from Melbourne, Lose pick 33 to North Melbourne.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Receive pick 33 from Brisbane and on trade that to Port Adelaide to Receive Ben Jacobs. North lose Cam Pederson to Melbourne.

PORT ADELAIDE

Recieve pick 33 from Brisbane, on traded by North Melbourne and lose Ben Jacobs.

A lot of stuffing around to secure a guy who can't get a regular game at NM - the bigger question - is he any good ? Edited by Weedster

Surely, the old adage of '...there is more than one fish in the sea...' applies here and there must be someone else we can target to play the role earmarked for Pedersen. Its not exactly like he is the saviour of the MFC and we need to jump through hoops to get him.

The latest on FB believe what you like. Essendon trade us second round pick (maybe lonergon also) for Gysberts. We then ontrade that pick for pederson. So forgetting lonergon whome the bombers are rumored to be delisting anyway it's a straight swap Gysberts for pederson.

I personally wouldn't touch pederson for anything more then a third round pick (49) and I certainly don't want to trade an outside mid with alot of upside (yeah yeah another one with potential) for another James seller type player.

LH I'm not sure about needing to target others too much though I'm sure the FD have ideas/options as much as I surmise they are just sitting and waiting now.

All the big moves we wanted are in the bag. I'm sure we'd like both Ray and Pedersen for their role-playing but we don't need to cow-tail to either the Sinners or the Roos. We CAN walk away.

I'd be letting them both know, yeah.....be nice, but we don't have to. Both StKilda and Nth must garner some picks in order to facilitate much of their desired trades and in Nths case moving on a player they don't want.

I'd wait and let the bastards squirm. Don't buckle now MFC , they'll both deal and on much more reasoned terms once they see the clock ticking !!!!!!!!

When has Gysberts ever played an outside mid game? I thought he was slow of foot with a poor tank - hardly the recipe for an outside mid type.

Yeah the two rumors doing the rounds for Pedersen to get to the Dees are.

Gysberts to Essendon

Pick 35 to North Melbourne

Pedersen to Melbourne

or

Martin to Brisbane

Pick 33 to North Melbourne

Pedersen to Melbourne

Personally I'm more keen on the Martin trade then the Gysberts one, but we'll see I guess. If we were to trade Gysberts for Pedersen I'd want something else to sweeten the deal. Even if it was only something like North's Pick 58 back as that would become our 3rd active pick assuming we trade Pick 49 as part of any Ray deal.

If we get Pick 33 & 35 I would keep one of them, Pick 49 and nothing more for Pederson, if the Saints don't want to keep Ray Pick 35 & maybe a change of our 4th round pick (in our favour). I would not use a 2nd round pick on Pederson and I expect continued improvement from big Fitzy this year so in saying that I don't expect the club to be held to ransom by North.

I expect late dealings on Friday for these moves

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
