Based on my limited viewing of the Scorpions games, if you had to ask me who was a better player out of Cook and Williams, then I would have to say Williams.

Granted that Cook was a first round pick and Williams was plucked from obscurity onto the rookie list, my view is that we have two players essentially competing for a key forward position in the team. Williams looks bigger (may not be quite as tall) and certainly stronger. He also knows where the goals are and appeared to be a reasonable set shot.

I would be interested to hear a case (if any) for keeping Cook over Williams.

Add, that he had 4 weeks off ill and that for 4days he was in a coma.

Then came back and played good football for Casey.

This guy is tough and wants it badly.

Time will tell if he has the skill for AFL

But he exhibits all the other required qualities.

Luke Williams - the guy that ended his career on '05?

yep, mighty luke williams, 51 spectacular games and 10 fabulous goals.

If you play for the dees you probably don't want to see the wiki entry say "He spent most of his career with Melbourne playing in the Demons' reserve side, the Sandringham Zebras, in the Victorian Football League."

Haha isn't it Leigh Williams? He does look pretty good when he's out their, as someone said he really seems to have the desire which I reckon Neeld loves in his players.

Posted

Leigh has displayed an incredible desire and determination in even getting back to training, let alone playing any level of footy this season. So easily could have been excused for throwing it all in....yet he came back through the 2s and apparently played good footy late in the season in VFL.

I will be interested to see if he can make the next huge step.

Bit late on Cook isn't it? He's gone one way or the other.

No harm in friendly debate about the comparrison though is there RR???

I think the Casey game is on the ABC this weekend - I am pretty keen to have a look

Posted

I love Williams desire. He's competative and does all the 1%'s.

The only concern I have over Williams is that for a KPF, in all the VFL game's I've gone to I haven't seen him take many contested marks/pack marks which is something that you'd ideally want in a key forward.

I have no issue with him having another year on the rookie list mind you and seeing how much more he can develop.

Williams by a mile.

Can withstand a bump for starters.

A has the ability to crunch through packs.

Besides that has a good pair of hands and can kick a ball.

So really no comparison.

Cook if your talking skills

williams by a country mile if your talking effort, desire, application and i think those are attributes make up for any shortfalls

would love to see him given a crack next year

A comparision between Leigh Williams and Jai Sheahan would be more relevant now. Both rookies and potential KPPs. I'd be really interested if someone who has seen a bit of the Scorps could comment. Living in Canberra I havn't seen either of them, live or on TV.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's only gone at this stage according to the Herald Sun. No word from the Club yet. May well go, though.

Good opening post, demon3564. Welcome aboard.

A lot of comparers on here haven't seen any of the players 'live' anyway/either

They just go along with the general consensus.

The unsubstantiated rumour on here at the moment is that Cook has gone, (it was in the quality newspaper the Herald Sun we have down here)

Sheahan was a 'shock' at not being picked up in the draft last year, we rookied him, probably had something to do with assistant coach Greaves who coached him at the Geelong Falcons last year, looks to be a player

Cook as an AA at under 18 level, he is a good mark (soft hands) he is tall and can read the ball really well in the air but has had issues with injuries and getting his fitness up to where it should be and has impacted on his weight gain as well (which he needs)

MFC have supposedly lost patience with him

Leigh Williams was a gun local league footballer who was kicking lots of goals in the East of Melbourne, we have lots of players from out that way now, so probably picked him up about him that way, he is a good mid sized forward who does the 1% really well, could be anythhing from what I have seen.......his whole physical shape has changed

Hope that helps

Good info. Thanks Satyricon. Knew some of that but not that Williams is good at the 1% stuff or that he is working on his body size. Sounds promising. Would be fantastic to pull a good player from relative obscurity, especially since we have not done as well as hoped with high draft picks of late.

Nick Smith has more potential than both combined, every time I watch the scorps he is clunking them. If you could develop his set shot he could be a beauty

I think it's Tim Smith. But I agree NAH, I really like the look of him.

Posted

I do like the look of Williams. He's strong through the body, able to hit packs and players hard. Not the best mark, nor the worst. Has very good game sense. He seems to like tapping the ball on to an open teammate while crunching the pack as well. Only real issue is his height, but he's about the same as Pavlich, and he almost won the Coleman this year.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
