Apologies for side-tracking, but have you contemplated changing your forum alias?

I read daily but rarely post, I will get around to it ones day!

I read an article recently about plans by GM to launch the Opel brand in Australia. I seem to remember the plan is to try and play the on the "Europeaness" of the brand. The idea that a Opel Astra or what ever might be able to compete against the BMW and VW cars better than a Holden Astra in the sales stakes.

If that is their plan then sponsoring the Demons would seem a good fit. And if it is a GM plan they will have plenty of marketing bucks and will be a long term strategy.

Hey, I just realised that the European version of the Chevy Volt - the Ampera - is made by Opel...

Electric car for those interested.

Well done MFC, great result!

Things are getting back to good things off field and I'm confident the MFC will come good on field!

I think this page outlines the story JM. > http://www.melbourne...41/default.aspx

Ahhh... I checked that exact page immediately preceding my post, so it has since been changed, obviously.

Fair enough, had to happen I guess.

Can I rent an OPEL through HERTZ?

Yep. Right after you book with Webjet.

Congrats to the Mfc on securing joint major sponsors Webjet & Opel. Better late than never.

Massive coup for the Club. Well done!! Half the cars with holden badges (eg astra etc) are Opel anyway. Might indicate consolidation for GMH going forward.

Would be nice to hang on to them for more than 12 months and not drop them off!!

Great news for the club.......

Congrats on a week or so that has seen the club secure what we can only assume is an excellent deal financially

Three great new sponsors. Nice to see things coming together off the field!!!

I've never seen an Opel car on Australian roads.

Does this mean they're going to start marketing their vehicles here?

The Barina's have been rebadged Opel's for years.

One might say that our start to the season has been quite hOPELess

The thing I like about this (apart from the $$$$$) is that in 2000 LG chose to launch their brand in Aus through us, and now Opel have chosen us to do the same. Great get Cam, you've had the month of you're life and come out very well.

Interesting how everyone was jumping all over Schwab for the collapse of the EW deal and his lack of due dilligence etc etc and calling for his head... thus far I have seen very little love for him in this thread. Funny (not) how we love to kick a man when he's down but can't find it in ourselves to praise him when he does well.

Thanks Cam... good get. (by the way, does anyone have an idea of the $ worth and agreed period for this deal?)

I think you answered your own question by asking that latter question. We all want to know how much and how long these contracts are for. If we've got good results in that regard then we can praise Schwab.

Not really... the fact that within lierally days of the EW sponsorship going belly-up, Cam has sealed not one, but three new sponsorship deals (WebJet, Hertz and Opel), which although maybe not exceeding the total of the EW deal (which with the benefit of hindsight was probably unrealistic anyway), hopefully will prove more valuable in the long term. Posters such as Thomo were happy to condemn, but where are they now?

And before anyone says, oh, but the possibility of such and such being a sponsor was handed to Schwab on a platter, understand that he is still responsible for convincing the potential sponsor of the benefits to them and for ultimately sealing the deal; for example, the Kaspersky sponsorship may have been handed to him by a supporter within the company, but it still wouldn't have happened without Cam's hard work and assurances.

While I don't know the value or length of this sponsorship deal, basic economic theory is that the car industry doesn't work on short term plans. Or to put it another way, big companies don't do small things well. So, OPEL would likely have a long term strategy - meaning at least 10 years - to try to crack the Australian market. Hopefully they'll be very long term sponsors of the club. But we will need to work hard to maintain and strengthen this relationship.

Looks awesome - should shut up those CS baggers now. Well done MFC great job.

Dont wish to derail the thread but I dont think so.

I remember they were shirt sponsor for AC Milan about 10 years ago, who for those who don't know are one of the biggest football (soccer) clubs in the world. Let's hope to see some of this action at some stage in the future.

Too right. And we lost LG because we didn't do a good enough job in trying to keep them.

This represents a fantastic opportunity to a have a serious, well credentialled, well cashed up major brand. It's a great get and we have too work a lot harder on managing the relationships than we have in the past,

And now we have got our 2 major sponsors and the Hertz sponsorship, I am going to miss the dodgey images on the website where someone has photoshopped the logo onto existing photos.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
