He played 15 games for us and polled the equal most brownlow votes with Davey who won the award suggesting had the body held up he had an equal year to our best. Sylvia's unlucky downfall is he is an attractive player to watch both in the looks sense of being enormous and a good looking player and classy when he turns it on. For these 2 reasons it creates hype and when the hype isn't matched weekly he is railroaded.

He is a genuine walk up best 18 player on any line of our midfield or forward line, but people must taper expectations for someone for the last 2 years has just played 30 games.

Potential my ass. He is incapable of playing 100 minutes of football for more than a handful of games per season. That is his potential. What you see is what you get. He has the body for football not the mind. He doesn't and never had the potential to be anything more than he is because of this. Quite a few on this forum need to realise this.

Colin Sylvia is currently MFC's best player. He and possibly Brent Moloney are Power Players in MFC. His style of play does attribute to injuries sadly. Granted he does appear to disappear on occasions and this is because of chronic Groin problems. He will put a smile on your face this year:)

I was trying to start a movement to get Col in the starting line up for round one...suspended sentence perhaps?? Can anyone one remember a Game against PA last year in the tropics. Dees got home but would have lost for sure if it wasn't for Sylvia and Jurrah. Same goes for the Pies the other day..Put that one down to Colin Sylvia. He's a star !

Can't take back the suspension now, and probably a fair enough call in the end. But in saying that, as frustrating as he is sometimes, he is underrated on this site. Like it or loathe it, but he is in the top 3 or 4 players at the club at the moment.

I agree he's one of our top players. ..& wished a different substantial punishment was chosen. If we lose to Brisbane it might have bitten us a bit.

You repeat that he is a star.

IMVHO he is a very talented player who could be a star IF he showed the application / concentration to play consistently at or near his best. That is the frustrating point repeatedly raised by so many of us here -- he risks being remembered as being a wasted talent: a 'superstar', if you like, who wasn't because he went missing far too often.

So far he is more like a meteor or a comet than a star that shines brightly consistently.

And I also feel that many of us here hope and beleive that MN is the person who can inspire / cajole / demand that Col reaches his best, and is remembered as what you already describe him as, a star, and not the coodabeen he risks remaining as. Serving the club imposed suspension is step one in this 'rehabilitation' and must not be revoked.

Secondly, I agree re your comparison with trapper.As HT points out Sylvia doesn't seem to be able to put his best forward on the track ,however, this year is one of his better years IMO.Look for a cracker year from him.

I could be wrong but I had the impression, especially from the last couple of years, that he was a very good trainer. Last years pre-season training reports consistently had him as a standout.

There is no one on our list who has more 'potential' then Colin, and there aren't many players in the AFL who has more 'potential' then him.

He is everything you want in a footballer, hard, strong, elite hands, elite feet, explosive and reasonably quick when he needs it.

He just lacks desire. It seems to be that Colin is happy for the fame and money from AFL, but maybe lacks the desire to be the best.

Neeld needs to find what makes him tick.

I suggest he go down to Tigerland and ask them what they do to him, cause everytime he plays the tiges, he has 30 touches, 5 goals, 10 marks and about 10 tackles.

I personally think he is our MVP.

I'll be over the moon if it is his best year. For me that will be top 3 in b&f. He has work to do and I hope he manages to excel this year.

If Col is in our top three we make the finals. My reasoning for this is Col will mainly play that high HFF midfielder role it is more like the old centres role working between the 50m arcs. If he is getting enough footy to be third in our B&F that means our forwards will be getting more high quality supply.

After reading post after post regarding Colin Sylvia I final got motivated and registered to add to the discussion.

2012 will be Colin's 9th years with the Demons. In that time he has never played more than the 19 games he played last year. After finishing in the mid to lower part of the eight for the first three years, he has played in teams that have finished 12th at best over the past five years.

Injuries have led to Colin being unable to string games together consistently throughout his time at MFC. As a result his career has never gained the momentum needed to establish himself as a reliable A grade footballer. Hopefully with the new football department and fitness staff Colin will play at least 21 games this season after missing round one. If this is the case I am confident he will be meeting the expectations of even the most doubtful supporters.

Throughout the last five years at least Sylvia has been playing in a team that lacks midfield grunt (putting it nicely). I think he will benefit hugely from the new recruiting direction of strong bodied mids. While he is able to win his own ball, I see Colin creating run and spread from the contested possession won by Jones and co. This is where he will be at his most damaging and benefit to the team. Playing in struggling teams is a battle for all but the very best (Judd and Ablett) and I think Colin is a player who will reach new levels with a strong midfield surrounding him.

disagree - until Wilsons last season and a half he was very consistent, albeit a bit frustrating because at least once a game Wilson would try to get too cute and get caught.

Last year he played 19 games and kicked 25 goals for the season this year he should be kicking a minimum of 2 goals a game if he can do this I would be happy.

A bit like Kosi at St.Kilda to me Col lacks the peripheral vision, awareness and decision making skills that would take him to the elite level. He has everything else going for him and will turn it on from time to time but expectations for him are too high in my view. In a good team he could fill a role and create a lot of damage forward with an occassional run midfield a bit like Chapman does at Geelong.
