This was my response to the dropping players thread and although I agree with the thread as a whole I thought this topic deserved it's own thread.

Although Sylvia's form has appeared somewhat up & down this year it should be noted that with (very) limited support from some of his teammates he is -

*1st in the league for inside 50's (massive stat considering...)

*Equal 3rd in the league for goal assists

With limited support that puts him in the elite category in my opinion.

When is he contracted to ?

I love the kid, but he's efforts at times are non existent, if he runs all day and relaly commitrs himself, he could be our Paul Chapman, but once the others get better he will also rise in class.

Could be top 15 in the AFL if he busted a gut for every contest.

hes a split personality.... live wire or lazy

annoys the sh!t out of me to tell you the truth.

Mr Inconsistency :huh:

There is always a question mark over hime for mine when he is struggling stay involved whether it is mental or physical because of the problems he has had with his body.

Hard one to gauge is our Colin. At the moment he is the most complete player on our list, just can't put it together often enough.

Firstly there is no such thing as elite without the support! If you are elite (Judd, Ablett, Pavlich) you can do it with out support.

Sylvia at the moment is a classic front runner. It's not neccessarily a horrible thing but he plays he's best footy in a side that has others around him to do some of his running.

I was hoping this year he found consistent form like late last year and went up a gear. At the moment it appears he hasn't.

Judd = 29 inside 50's & 4 goal assists

Sylvia = 35 inside 50's & 7 goal assists

Judd = 3goals, 6points

Sylvia = 4goals, 3points

When we start firing as a team, my guess is that he will hit that gear you're talking about too.

Agreed, he needs support and will get it,,,, and from some of the kids, that will progress quickly.

IMO next year after getting enough games into many, players like him will develop their leadrship qualities as others grow around them. This year I think we're still ontrack, but 2 losses in a pathetic style were troublesome and soft.

We need to kick that stuff right out the door.

Sylvia's form has been pretty good, probably one of our best.

The only thing between Sylvia and being an A grade 'elite' footballer is consistency. He has never had it on or off the field, so until he finds a way to achieve mental and physical consistency he'll never be more than a good B grader.

Interesting comparison to Judd.....although Judd seems to crank the whole side up....hopefully this aspect will come.

He's a frontrunner.

He still relies on others to get the ball into his hands.

With a body like his and the talent he has that isn't great...

The stats are surprising. He has so much ability but comes in and out of the game and that is probably due to his fitness. Maybe his off field "socialising" has something to do with it.

I saw Colin play cracker of a lone hand on the QBW against the Pies when MFC got wiped.

His problem is that he just has not delivered anywhere near the consistency that could be expected of him. Its his 8th year of AFL with over 100 games and he still has the word "potential" round his neck. He needs to deliver.

Judd = 29 inside 50's & 4 goal assists

Never have statistics been used to tell a bigger lie.

Judd is a elite, a once in a generation midfielder who does what he does with the A grade midfield around. Sylvia is at best a B grader with pretensions. The gulf is so wide between the two players.

He has done at 3 full pre seasons. Fitness should not be an issue for him as he is allegedly over his OP. Are you alleging that he is still breaching team rules? Not area to speculate in.

Yes there is that word again Potential the most used term on this forum after hind sight

The group we have have to take responsibility for their performances and no amount of whining about young ,developing light bodies ya ya ya wont change that fact

Colin would have been cleared long ago by a club that meant business and didnt just see themselves as making up the numbers and being a good social partner with every issue that comes around the AFL

Get hard demons and wear the red a blue with pride and feel all that it means

Egads...weve all just about agreed on something... Col is good but inconsistent.

It's a double edged blade. goes both ways.

Sylvia needs support to help him ahow his true wares. But also others need support to show theirs. So. they all have to pull their weight. Especially when things get tough. This is what leadership's all about.

Sylvia in now in his Mid twenties so like it or Not it's he and his peers who must pull the finger out and lead the way. He cant expect the 1st Year boys to show them how to do it. So it's the role of the 24 years plus, age group who Must lift.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Sylvia isn't Judd's little finger. Judd leaves everything he has on the field.

Col has improved out of this world last couple of years, but he is no Chris Judd.

No he hasn't.

He plays the odd great game and goes missing.

Can anyone recall Col playing to his ability for a full month in his career?

His second and third efforts are often lacking, sometimes non-existant.

As Rhino said, 100 games plus into his career and Sylvia is still talked about in terms of potential.

I couldn't disagree more.

Some of Sylvia's best games have been in a loosing side, with not much help from team mates.

Perhaps watch him before throwing out this kind of rubbish.

Give more than that you two...

Last year he started to get his own footy. But he still relies on getting hands to the outside, and being delivered the ball as he still plays a lot of his footy as a flanker.

He's in the centre more now, but I expect more from him than the decent footy he is delivering.

We should all be expecting more.

col has all the atributes to be the best player on our list (and possibly is). he like all our players have been a been up and down but that being said he has remained solid if not beter than most. he has the capacity to be a top 5% player in the comp. I believe it will happen.

    Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

    BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

    Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
