Interesting to note as reported in todays Hun that Mark Kleiman ( of Velocity Sports, Scully's manager) has quit to join 3AW.

Make of that what you will but possiblyb a different fellow in the position ( looking after Scully ) and in view of whats transpired might be sage to take a different tac..maybe.

As always time will tell. As good as Scully is and might be he is still only one....and we have many !!!!!!!! :)

Do we really think staying in Melbourne would be that much of a motivating factor for him signing with MFC. Sydney is one hour away by plane. Most of us on this site would move to the other side of the planet for that sort of money. (Or even move to Adelaide!!!)

Unless his folks are moving up with him, it will be a huge shock to the system. Especially considering his apparent closeness to his family.

He will rarely see them, even if it is only a 1 hour away.

I would think that staying in Melbourne would be one of a myriad of motivating factors for him to re-sign with MFC.

Technically, Sydney airport is 1 hour and 20 minutes by plane and add the trip from the airport to West Sydney on top of that- but for arguments sake we will say it is a one hour trip. One hour by plane/24 hours, the result is the same; home base is in a foreign land with no family/support network present.

I am sure most people on this site would move to the other side of the planet for the alleged money on offer from the GWS, heck- I would consider a move to Mosul for that cash, but what you fail to see is Scully is not like you or I, or indeed anyone on this site. He has a very particular set of skills, skills he has acquired over a very long (short) career, skills that make him a nightmare for people like you (other clubs) Basically what I am trying to say in a Liam Neeson Taken-esque kind of way is that Scully has the potential to earn massive coin and he knows it. The only way you, myself or a good majority of this board could hope to see that kind of moolah would be if we hit the lottery. In short Scully knows there will always be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for him- he doesn't have to give up his dreams at this current stage to go searching for it. He can chase the dollars after the success- as most professional people do.

my 2 cents are:

1. I hope he stays it would show the any others coming out of contract our core is unified and want be part of something special.

2. If he doesnt its not the end of the world. We have a strong list that will move than cover him. Really its up to him if he is serious about winning premierships or he is around to make as much as he can.

If he wants to make the dough thats cool but the MFC needs players who want to commit and have red and blue running through their veins.

If thats not Tom its best he goes. If it is Tom then bring on the next 10 years!!!

Sydney is one hour away by plane.

Technically yes, but Melb to Syd with drive time from the Eastern suburbs, parking at airport, delays, baggage collection, travel from other end could well be a half day journey

I flew to Syd a couple of weeks ago for work, leaving home at 5 am got to Syd CBD at 12.30 pm due to several delays at Melb airport. It would wear a bit thin after a while

Agree I travel to Sydney almost every 2 weeks.

It does wear thin and it is never less than 2hours to get from Melb to Syd by the time you leave the airport.

Not to mention the drive out to Western Syd isnt the quickest...it goes on forever...

Let alone the drive from Berwick to Tullamarine....

A few flights delayed by storms....alot of time goes by...

You also need to factor in cost of living. Sydney is way more expensive than Melbourne. If you are looking at a contract to move to Sydney that would need to be taken into account.

not any more apparently.

Posted

Now I cantr really validate how accurate this is but its a possible indication

Cost of living calculator

For a long time now its been considered far more expensive to live comparable lifestyle in Sydney as compared Melbourne.

Property mean values have inched up down here to being about 90% of Sydney's

The calculator shows Syd as being about 25% more in dollar terms than Melb. Stil a bit Id say !!

Can't see that being an issue when you are potentially earning $6M ;)

well its realative values... and after tax too

If for argument it costs 20-25% more to get teh same X value thenit goes that for 4.8 M youd enjoy the same in Melbourne

We mighnt be able to fork out 6...but maybe 4 over 5 years etc. The difference in money becomes less enticing ??

What concerns me is the names of Hodge & Daisy Thomas have been thrown around earlier last week and those two couldn't come out quick enough to declare their intensions. I would love to hera this from Toms mouth " I love it at Melbourne and I plan to play out my days here & the contracts will be worked out by my manger". So far I've heard SFA !!!

Can't compare those two to Scully.

Hodge is captain, he has to address those rumours, and Thomas is an attention wh*re.

Scully doesn't strike me as someone who will call his own press conference to talk about himself. I'm sure if a reporter asks him he would say he's happy at Melbourne.

While travelling to Adelaide, I once met the family of a Melbourne born player who had been drafted to play for the Crows. They spoke of what it cost the family to visit their son and brother during a footy season. This included travel, accommodation, time off work etc. Probably wouldn't matter when a player is earning top dollar but it still adds up and this family wasn't very happy about the situation.

He's doing a good job avoiding the reporters.

They aren't offering him 6 mil. I've been over this repeatedly.

thats why i said POTENTIALLY

Add in the third party deals, deals he could get through club sponsors, it would not be far off the $1M per year

You can add Marc Murphy to that list. Article in sun today.

GWS are able to take pot shots left right and centre. They can run amok with sensational claims in order to unsettle all and sundry. This WILL be Sheedys idea for sure...play with the minds of the opposition as thats all they can play with. Its a bit like divide and conquer stuff.

Most of the other talent so far named in GWS's sights have been a little older and quite possibly as their careers are a little more established etc they feel more comfortable within themselves to call shots and retaliate to the muck raking.

Tom is young. Yes possibly far more mature than many his age but still young. I would have no doubt more than a few discussions have and will be held within the family and the club would be remiss not to take advantage of the management situation.

A reality though is that we as a club do have more than a box load of talent. Talent alone is not sufficient until realised but on paper we have embarrassing riches compared to more than a couple of clubs. We wont be able to keep everyone.

I still have a feeling that Tom will reverse his stance on deferring contractual negotiations and this may al be resolved sooner than later. I think the original posturiing was the idea of management.

I believe if the worst happens with Tom, it will not mess about with our destiny.

It doesn't take an astrologer to see all the stars are aligning against him staying with us. Nothing has been said to indicate these rumours may be spurious.

As has been pointed out, other high profile potential GWS targets have been quick to show their allegiances. Tom has not. Supporters cling to the hope that he has some love for the club as a justification he may stay. He has not shown it as yet.

If Tom does not wan't to play with us then so be it.

We will forge ahead with our destiny. If our wealth of talent will be realised within the next few seasons then we will have make some painful sacrifices along the way. To echo the sentiments of Belzebub59. If we pay Tom close to what is rumoured by GWS, how can we hope to keep all the likes of Watts, Trengrove, Jurrah, Frawley or others if they realise their own potential? Some will have to go.

He's GAWN. It's going to be painfull to watch him go around this year. Wouldn't mind if he did a long term injury just so I don't have sit through it. Richmond manage to sign Martin, Carlton get Murphy but we can't get our man. Makes me angry to be honest. We better get something decent in return.

Having so many high draft picks that have the chance to turn into 'stars' of the game was always going to stretch our cap.

Paying over the odds for a couple was always going to happen with cashed up clubs looking to poach.

I really don't think Harrington and Schwab haven't thought this through.

It's going to be tight but we should be able to do it.

Tom will be a Demon for a while yet.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
