Moloney is far and away the best choice in the mid-20s bracket. I'd be disappointed if Davey was chosen - I can't help but remember the number of times I've seen him give away a 50 for carrying on about a decision - and I don't think anyone else would be on the radar.

But its the Tom Harley model!

I'm baffled as to how the "Tom Harley model" came to be that having a defender, ideally the 3rd tall help-defender, as the captain is the way to go.

It beggars belief.

It really is a tough one. Green is my choice too but I'm not sure he'd be the choice of his team-mates. It was only two years ago that he was overlooked for a position in the large leadership group of a very young team. Moloney has been impressive but am I the only one who thinks his position in the team might be questioned within 12 months? Rivers is equally impressive but could struggle to keep his place as well. Davey has done some great things but discipline when targetted in big games is a real issue. Grimes and the younger brigade aren't ready and would upset the dynamic if given the top job too soon. Sylvia might be ready for the leadership group but needs to keep clean off the park for more than 18 months. I hope Green's stocks have risen amongst the playing group because he definitely ticks all the boxes. He's solid with the media, cleanskin off the field, is in career best form and has consistently played well when we've needed him most. He's also got the flexibility to go where the action is when we need our captain to lead through action.

I'd have Green as my skipper. Moloney as the vice captain. I'd retain Davey and Rivers in the leadership group. Promote Jamar, give Syliva added responsibility and then round out the leadership team with Grimes as the young skipper in waiting. Who's with me?

Of all of the views expressed here, I think you've summed it up best Goodvibes.

This thinking definitely has merit, although BG generally moves around more than Neita did during his captaincy. Whether it will stay that way probably opens up a forward line discussion.

Edit: wouldn't it be nice to have 3 greens!

Using this criteria then it has to be Green for Captain. He reminds me of Junior in so many ways in patticular the way he is prepared to put his body on the line. No one will forget the game when he was knocked out and then came back on. That was surely inspirational to the team. He does fire them up and there are many times when he has the boys in a group talking to them. Vice Captains I believe have to be Davey and Moloney. Moloney because of the off field work that he does especially with the younger boys and Davey just for being Aaron and the figurehead to our indigenous boys. Bruce may be popular with the players but there has not been one occasion that stands out to me that was "inspirational" or one that shouts out leader. This maybe a little controversial but I would like to see Scully and or Grimes promoted in some way to the leadership group as well.

All this obviously has no bearing on who our new captain is as Inner Demon pointed out. I go back to when Junior was voted as our next Captain and many people here including myself were wondering if he was indeed made of the necessary stuff. Well weren't we all proved wrong.

In addition to the Green situation, re: not being in the leadership group, I seem to remember we had a large injection of youth at that stage (who did not know him as a leader) and Green had been injured and therefore not present much at preseason training with the main group.

Out of mind, out of sight. And he admitted he was not as vocal then, as he is now.

I think he'd be the perfect choice for vice, with Bruce as captain.

I would hope that if Davey got the nod the extra responsibility would kick him into a more mature mindset. He also lets a hard tag get to him mentally....maybe the captaincy would help him in this area?!

Agree.

Massively.

I think his leadership is pivotal. Very vocal in the backline and seems easy to talk to.

He is in the leadership group

On another note its amazing that a number of people are quite happy to dish Cameron Bruce, our VC off to GC when he might be our next captain. I am sure all posters would respect that decision!

How's Jonathan Brown as a captain?

Craig Bolton?

Having a leadership group allows for there to be leaders all over the ground at any given time, making this point redundant.

OK..having decided to obviously not read the meaning of my post.. Neeta was a FF .. Borwn is CHF who moves infiled at times.. Bolton a CHB who also played into the midfiled.. Both these situations allow for more impact into the game, more ability to involve yourself and rope in others. As a FF or FB your to some degree at mercy of the play..

Again Buckley's forter was to be able to actually turn games by lifitng in his ability to be at the ball and involves others. ..and again your very limited to do this at either pointy end.

Yes thats why you have leadership groups...agree.. and maybe these leaders will be able to muster their colleagues in that particular area of the ground...but they cant influence in the way a midfielder type can. Yes have KPP in leadership roles.. but maybe a more utility type can better 'captain' during a game. Hardly makes the point redundant..augments it if anything.

Just my opinion.

If they are indeed looking at a longer term proposition for the captaincy (as opposed to a Green or Bruce selection - short/med term) with the 24-25yr (26?) bracket. Moloney - Davey - Rivers fall into this category.

I agree with your thoughts on Davey. Moloney's passion for the club is unquestionable. I suppose my thoughts are that he is 26 (not old at all) and because I've heard the "24-25" mentioned, it leaves me with Rivers. I see Rivers as an integral part of the backline, the most experienced who reads the play well. 2009-10 seasons has seen him return on the field consistently. When he is up we look steady down back. He is well respected within the group. So I don't really see or agree for that matter that Moloney is as "far and away the best choice in the mid 20's bracket."

Outside of all this ^ I'll repeat, I still think Green should be captain. I just get the feeling from what has been stated to date, that it might not turn out that way.

Brown at CHF doesn't see him cross the centre.

Bolton is not a CHB, he's a FB, and doesn't leave the 50 much in any game.

Yes, at FB or FF you're not as involved in the play, but to say that excludes you from captaining is a pretty weak argument IMO. I thought Neitz was a fine captain.

Not to point people out, but WJ, what made you choose Brad Miller? A joke, or do you actually think he'd not only be a good captain, but on our list next year in the first place?

Using an iPhone and was trying to do something else. Cancelled that one and have now voted for Brad Green in what will most likely be the only vote I cast for a Green this weekend :).

I voted green seems obvious! Would prefer grimmes or Beamer but both really battle injury if that has any bearing on anything!

It's a dificult call from the outside. All the leading candidates seem to have at least one defiecency from where we sit.

It's uncertain if Green has the necessary respect of the players as far as being captain goes after being left out of the player voted leadership group at the start of 08.

Davey can spit the dummy when struggling with a hard tag.

Moloney may struggle to stay in the 22 in a few years and I can't help but think it might end in tears like Richie Vandenberg.

Bruce may not be best 22 for much longer either.

Rivers has only just been elevated to the leadership group and has only recently got back into top form after a long period out of the game.

I voted for Green but I'll back the club to make the right call. They seem to be kicking goals all over the place at the moment. We've had Leading Teams at the club for 3 years now so if it is left up to the players to vote for the captain it won't simply be a popularity contest. It'll be more of a respect contest. If the coaching panel makes the call I'm confident they'll have all the necessary inormation to make the right one. It'll be interestind to see who gets it.

On a side note, when do people think it'll be announced? Could be months off.

Not anytime before NAB cup time at earliest, in my opinion anyway. Unless the club see a need to use the new captain in any membership promotions or similar.

The people have spoken - Green by an absolute country mile, folks!

Rivers as a roughie is a great bet!! Not that I'm a member of the site, but Riv as captain would really stick it up the 'Demonology' peeps who despise the bloke with a passion.

I would think that with the exit of unior they will be looking for another relative older type with calm , sound mind on shoulders for a couple ( 2-3) years til a youngen matures into the role.

Bruce wont be around that long..( just a reality most likely ) Leaves only Green and Davey. Green likely to get the nod and thats also the view of many in the game ( media etc )

Still as the players are to get the say it might prove all of us wrong

I voted Beamer, because I think hd can take it for a couple of years while waiting for one of the younger brigade to come up.

In all honesty though I think Green will get it

Flash is not captain material. Brilliant inspiring player when on, but not captaincy material for me.

I thought there may have been a mitigating factor.

And good call WJ, this will certainly be my only vote for a Green this weekend too.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
