Bailey is clearly trying to build a defence of the future. he's clearly trying to mould the players that he rates.

Seems as though he's trying to develop Garland, Frawley and Rivers as 3 key defenders.

I dont have a problem with dropping Carrol, bc if these 3 guyz are gonna develop as future key defedners, then they need to be played, moulded and developed in that position.

I like Carroll but it isn't good for anyone to feel like a fixture in an under-performing team. Nathan can now show us what he is made of. He goes back to Sandy, plays good footy for them and returns better for the experience OR he fades back into the category of fringe player that some here have always considered him to be. I think more of him than that... and what about Judy? What an opportunity. Will he get a drubbing or will he justify the coach's faith. So far I have noticed that he has pace, can take a grab and has attacking handball skills (a rare commodity in this group). Mind you, he shows all of the above in small doses. If he can show them regularly for four quarters for 20 games a year we have a full-back!

Posted

Garland's last game earned hi his spot this week. There were only a couple of under-performers 2 weeks ago, and one of them (Bell) got 3 brownlow points against the side we're coming up against.

Posted

Carroll is a player that can good when the team is travelling well, but shouldn't be relied upon to carry the backline.

I don't know a lot about Adelaide, however they never seem to have any big forwards and therefore it may be a match-up issue as much as anything.

Posted

I think it's Bailey and his match committee seeing the writing on the wall.

Back a 20 yr old 191cm defender (Garland) over a 27 yr old 191cm defender (Carroll).

When a team is 1 and 6 after finishing 5 and 17 the year before, it makes perfect sense to me.

True and garland does show some flair besides his hairstyle.seem to be a mini rivers in the way he reads the play lets hope he develops well and injury free. I always thought carroll was not a strong enough leader and he does seem so undersized against some of the big guys..bring in dutchy holland for the big guys and let garland have the rest that seams the best scenario. we seem so much better down back when wheels is playing..is it his attack on the ball or is he really the genreal down there?

Posted

When I first saw this I thought it was more a match up thing than anything else, Garland looks quicker and more athletic than Carrol, I could not think of a match up for Carrol, will they put Garland on Burton???

Bag me all you want, but Garland over Carroll is a DISCRACE! Say what you like, Carroll deserves his spot no matter what you think about him, and you know it!!

Garland has played 1 good game, and that is it. Dozer has been a lone gunman down back for us over the past few seasons, and he has done his best conisdering the insane amount of times the ball has been pumped inot our backline. Not our best backman, but does enough every week to retain his spot. He has been in average form, but has been better than Bell and is proven over garland.

Bell hasn't done much, yet he is in the side. I am all for developing younger players, but FFS do we intend to even stop adelaide scoring with this backline?? Put guys in the backline with some experience.

I think this is a sign of the youth policy which is good, if the coaching panel are to be this ruthless, I hope hte same treatmet is shown to all players who are not dominating in their position. If carroll was axed for his performance, I am guessing there will be a few more bullets in Bailz gun next week come selection time.

This is the first mve Bailz has made that has [censored] me off!!!

The fact of the matter is, Carroll's best doesn't cut it at AFL level. As hard as he tries, he just aint up to it. Garland may cop a flogging tomorrow, but i've seen qualities in his game that Carroll doesn't possess, and is worth persisting with.

The best selection decision by Bailey this season.

Leaving Carroll out of the 22 is risky at best, no insurance if the young guys fail. Bruce will pick up Burton

Good point. What happens if Garland plays like he has in every game except the last one? Still, gotta try sometime, Carroll's definitely not the future. Maybe a run with Sandy this week will re-align his priorities re:his off-field actions

Care to elaborate? Carroll is nothing special, I agree, but I think he is decent enough when things are not stacked against him (ie when the midfield is not getting mauled).

Having no Carroll in defence will give Bailey the oppurtunity to see first hand what his back six can do against a top 8 side which is something that cannot be simmulated on the training track

I think its a positive forward moving decision

Posted

Garland has had confidence issues sometimes with his attack on the ball, but looks a decent player generally.

I'm a little sad for Carroll, honestly. He's definately not a dud and he worked his way into the team the hard way.

Garland(20), Warnock(24), Frawley(19), Bell(23), Bartram(20), Rivers(23).

Definately the youngest defense in the AFL right now. Frankly it's probably the youngest defence I've ever seen. It's odd that Warnock is oldest when he's got just six games to his name.

Rivers is still only 23. Every once in a while that really blows me away.

Posted

Carroll is better than Garland, but Garland has the chance to contribute when we are pushing for a flag in a few years whereas Carroll has 1 or 2 years left.

Yes I know he is only 27 but he is too small/slow to play on the better forwards and is useless as a rebounding defender because of his skills.

At the minute I don't rate Garland but he is just 20 and that's where we are at right now, after winning 6 of our last 30 games.

Posted

Garland, like Frawley i think, needs confidence to play his proper game, i.e. the typ of game that got him drafted in the first place.

Now, getting spanked by a Crows forwardline at AAMI stadium may not do much for the confidence, but i think the more important part of this equation would be the confidence gained by the coach backing him and giving him responsibility, which is much more important in the long run

You are spot on Matey.

Garland's last game was probably his best but he was still flogged - Farmer beat him at almost every contest & could have kicked 5 on him. He squibbed a chest mark & punched instead which cost us a goal.

Bell is in terrible form & has gone backwards yet still gets picked.

Bartram is the one who has got away scott free - his form is woeful.

We have replaced the Daniher love children with the Bailey love children.

Adelaide will win by 15 goals.

It has been reported that Jared Rivers missed training today and that he might be in doubt for tomorrow so it wouldn't surprise me if Nathan Carroll came back into the side.

Kill me now

You're right there. I will be the first to admit that I hated Frawley's game last year and would really get frusturated watching him, but this year he has really put me back in my box. I am hoping that, with time, Garland will progress as Frawley has and be a player we are confident moving forward with.

But I do find it a bit weird that we're pushing him to play as a backman when he played as a forward in his junior years..

And if Rivers is injured again...:(

Posted

Fingers crossed that Rivers is alright, or at the least that it's not a serious problem.

At least we can be moderately sure it's not his OP/groin problems, given that they've just come from a week off surely the training wouldn't have been overdone enough to cause a flare up? Surely?

Carroll might come back in as the reserve 'Rivers'. I think he'd enjoy the different responsibilities. He does allright at reading the play at least.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
