  1. Doesn't matter if you can launch the nut like an ICBM, if you're a running half-back flanker its all about accuracy. If you're turning it over with indiscriminant kicks, you get caught out of position, and your opponent cuts you up on the rebound. We have enough blokes who can thump it, but totally miss the target.
  2. Peake is 26, with only solid-good legspeed and a propensity for torching it, primarily because he can't kick that well on the run. Fair to say that for a 'running' player, this is a considerable handicap. I can think of players I'd like at the club less, but lets hope this doesn't manifest itself in trade week.
  3. I take it 'Nana' is your mother in law
  4. Does anyone else liken this to two parents fighting obsessively whilst their neglected child watches on? The only problem is, rather than looking at the child and seeing sense, the 'parents' will look at us and think what an ugly duckling we are, with no obvious signs of blossoming into the proverbial swan. We can be fairly confident that there are those in the AFL that would like to see us boned, but I doubt the MCC is any better. They will most likely come through for us this time around, but if things haven't improved dramatically in the next 12 months, and we are in a similar position next year, the situation will be a very hairy one for this club. Which is not to be taken lightly, given that the position we are currently in isn't particularly savoury. Was surprised when Schwabb said that thus far we haven't had a business plan to make us financially viable. I hope he is speaking in relative terms, otherwise previous administrations should be fustigated. And I'm not talking about your standard, bread and butter, 'win footy games and you'll build membership and make money' strategy - that is a given. I'm talking about a proper business model to support the club's 'football business'.
  5. Gourdis was Richmond's first pick in the pre-season draft last year. He was delisted at the end of the season if I'm not mistaken. Unless they are planning on redrafting him (seems unlikely) it won't be Gourdis.
  6. Can't believe it. I watched Arsenal do their best Liverpool impersonation at 'borough. Didn't think much of the result because I can't see Arsenal doing anything more than sneaking into the top 4 at this stage. Still, Wenger will probably get another roasting this week, just in time for him to get the best out of his side and pull our pants down next weekend. In theory we should have too much for them in the middle, but up front we (still) don't have anything to trouble them, and Adebayor has too much height for Carragher, and too much pace for Hyypia. Also, props to Chelsea and Man Utd for having the good graces to draw after our pants effort at Anfield on Saturday. Hull aren't a bad side, and they have some dangerous players, but after equalising what did irritated me no end was how our cutting edge evapourated. When we were trailing, it looked as though we could easily score 5. But we got level, and we probably had two genuinely close efforts for the remaining 60 minutes of the match. Bollocks!
  7. Will be denied I would have thought, though the political implications and outrage from the Cousins sympathisers (ie. 75% of the football public) may be a factor. Why do they need two picks? Who the hell are they so set on with the first one that they can't just pick him up with that?
  8. Your avatar is almost as huge as your guns Wise.
  9. I can't believe it went on this long. Must be a slow week for us all. Anyway I didn't mean to suggest you were a negative poster 45. As you say the truth is quite the opposite.
  10. It did sound a smidgeon negative mate. You were probably just countering the overly optimistic hypothesis about the photos with the obvious reverse, but still...
  11. I agree, in that people are drawing an extremely long bow if they think that photos give away anything about his footballing ability. He looks fit, and thats about all you can say. You don't need to take the negative side though either 45. God you really are a Spurs fan.
  12. I had to laugh. He complained of stiffness in his back and it isn't back-related?
  13. Of course not. In his last two years he tarnished his reputation somewhat, but he remains a champion of this club. Nobody will boo him, but it is a shame that some sportsmen can't just retire gracefully, before they fall so spectacularly from grace.
  14. I think there is a proviso or two involved, but don't the new rookie rules enable us to have one of our rookies (at any given time) playing senior footy without actually elevating them?
  15. Normal service resumed then at the top, after a few weird and not-so-wonderful weeks with some unexpected and lacklustre results. Watched Liverpool struggle at Blackburn in the first 60 minutes, and thought we about to cough up more easy points. Blackburn crumbled big time in the final quarter of the match though, and after having the lion's share of possession for the entire match, we got the win we probably just deserved, thanks in no small way to the drive of Stevie G from midfield. The biggest concern remains the lack of genuine goal threat. Kuyt is a smart player who works his backside off, but he doesn't have any real x-factor, and can't play off the shoulder ala Torres due to lack of pace. No Nando till January is going to be painful. Elsewhere, the chavs did a classic smash n grab job at Bolton, scoring 2 early goals and then playing on the counter for the rest of the match, whilst Bolton ineptly peppered their goal. Mancs out of jail thanks to Vidic at the death. Arsenal do their thang and get an early goal before making their fans sweat for 70-odd minutes. Bless. West Ham v Totty looks like points for your boys 45, but West Ham have some blokes who can definitely catch you napping.
  16. My guess is that he started to read it and thought it was genuine, then felt stupid. Either that or he was being a vindictive little...
  17. Precisely the point Bob, another quality post. It doesn't really matter whether your forwards are 180cm or 200cm; if they are getting lace out delivery from a talented midfield they are going to look good.
  18. Ah ok. Surprises me I'll admit- they seem like they're from different worlds. Not saying theres anything wrong with a bit of arrogance when you have something to crow about... Nick Davis doesn't.
  19. I wouldn't have thought Voss would touch Davis with a goal post. You'd have to think that once he hits his straps Voss will run a pretty tight ship, and there'd be no room for inexplicably arrogant vermin like Nick Davis.
  20. $@#($^@#*$(^*@#*(@(^@@!^@!#^!^!!@#%*&%&*!!!!!!!! Stoke... Fulham... and now West Ham. Three very ordinary sides whom we've dropped 2 points each to at home. We should at least be 5 points clear. Instead we're 1 point clear, and only 6 clear of the relentless Mancs, who have a game in hand. I suppose I should be greatful that we're on top at all. But we still haven't played Arsenal, whom like us have beaten both Man U and Chelsea, and despite their own inadequacies, have looked a hell of a lot more likely to score than we have. Its dropping easy points in games like the afore mentioned three that is going to cost us this title race in the end. I've always admired Robbie Keane as a footballer. I thought he was an excellent little player at Tottenham, and a good team man at that. But the more I see of him at Liverpool, the more I want to wring his neck. Some of his misses this season have been so inept they make you want to brick the TV. But what irritates me is the petulance he shows, both towards the referee and his team mates. The number of times he moans at wingers Kuyt or Riera for delivering poor passes or having a rip at goal themselves is inexplicable. What would you have done with it Robbie? Fresh-aired it or ballooned it over the bar? End Rant.
  21. The first point is innaccurate, as Schtacker has established. The second point I agree with, but I don't think it helps you case in this instance. I think that unless you take genuine top-10 rated talls, your chance of getting good ones is poor. With that in mind then, would you have thrown picks 17 and 19 in a highly-rated draft at average KPPs (given that the most highly rated were probably gone), just because we appear to have a deficiency in that area? Perhaps a later pick, but with respect, you are starting to get into the 'extremely optimistic' category, particularly with talls, at that stage, and it would seem very much like tokenism to take an average rated tall later in the draft. I think you, and others, have a poor concept of 'balance' in a modern football list. With the importance of ruck contests ever-dwindling, and the dominance of big forwards also diminished (notable exceptions such as Buddy notwithstanding), the majority of players on an AFL list should be short-medium runners. With the fact that we have a number of tall prospects (of variable quality, admittedly) on our list presently, I don't think the club needs to justify aiming at quick, skillful midfielders (another obvious deficiency of ours) ahead of key position types in this draft, especially with Watts at No. 1. People could argue that a ruckman would have been a good late pick, but as I think has been established, good rucks can come from absolutely anywhere, and I reckon you're just as likely to bag one from your rookie list as pick 35 or 51.
  22. Exactly. And whom, in all your wisdom, do you believe were the good key forwards available at 17 and 19, who were also clearly superior choices to Blease and Strauss? Since they are hard to find, what do you reckon the odds are of us landing a good KPF with a later pick? Minimal, I would have thought. We've got a hatful of promising young tall defenders. I concur another tall forward option would be IDEAL (if far from essential), but the last thing I want is us chucking handy picks away at a problem we are never going to be able to solve in one year, without at least a couple of top-10 picks and a serious dose of luck.
  23. I don't know alot about Lisle but I've seen Cornelius in a couple of games, good and bad, and there were reasons why he slid so far. One is his body size. At 192cm and very skinny he isn't exactly classic Key Position Forward (more a tall flanker), which is where he plays. Doesn't mean he can't play it but there are obvious question marks with regards to the AFL. Also, he seems to be what I would describe as 'mercurial', meaning he can do some great things but also has a tendency to vanish completely in patches (cough, Newton). If you don't put any weight in what I've said, then put weight in the fact that these guys obviously weren't rated that highly by ANY club, given each overlooked them at least 3 times.
  24. I had it recorded on the Foxtel IQ, but I've deleted it now unfortunately. It wasn't that great. Good if you were at work all day and couldn't get any SEN coverage or get on the net, but with 16 teams to cover in an hour there is only so much detail you can go into. What was good was that they had Jack Watts in the studio for a 5-10 minute interview, and boy oh boy, this guy is amazing for a 17 year old, in terms of his attitude and his maturity. Every time I've heard him speak I'm more and more convinced that he'll make the big time, just with his temperament alone.
  25. Pretty much agree with that. All the relics over at Demonology are moaning about how we didn't draft enough KPP or a ruckman, demonstrating how hopeless their understanding is, both of modern football and the draft. How many genuine KPP do Geelong have in their best 22? 3, probably, in Scarlett, Harley, and Mooney, only one of which you would say is a genuine star. Premiers last year. What about Hawthorn? Again, probably 3, including one they can hardly get on the park (Croad). Premiers this year. Sydney of a few years back? 3, maybe 4 if you believe that Leo Barry is a bona-fide KP type full back. Premiers 2005. And the West Coast premiership side of 2006? I wouldn't say they had more than 4, and I reckon I'm pushing it by including Hunter alongside Lynch, Glass, and Hansen. Glass is the only good player in that lot. Of all these KPPs in premiership sides, I wouldn't say more than 1 in any given team was an outright star. But wait... KPPs are the be all and end all aren't they? Apparently not. This game is won and lost IN THE MIDDLE, with hard-running, good disposal and attack on the football. All these sides had very good midfields, and that is what got them across the line. Our Key Position stocks are perfectly adequate given the nature of modern football. If Watts turns out to be a gun forward, Garland continues to improve, perhaps adding a forward dimension to his game, and one or two of Martin, Warnock, Rivers, Newton or even Miller can lock down a place in the team and play consistent football, then the KPP ingredients for a modern premiership team are satisfied. In regards to ruckman, aside from a few standouts each year, you might as well be playing pin the tail on the donkey. Good ruckman could come from anywhere (rookie drafts, PSD being just as probable as from ND selections), and as I have said previously, I'd be pretty irked if the club chose to [censored] away good picks just because such and such happens to be 200cm. What we have been sorely, sorely lacking is another dimension and some creativity in our midfield, and prima facie our picks seem to be directed at remedying that situation.
