Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 21

What’s really grinding my gears is that we’ve come so far and yet we still manage to be the laughing stock of the competition.

Now I think it’s partially because the media keeps building us up as contenders when very few actually following us never said anything like it. But I’m sick of us being laughed at.

Wow - big tuff Buddy taking out one of the lightest built guys on the ground while he isn't looking.

What's as concerning is the total lack of reaction from our other blokes standing right next to it.

This is a good reminder that our game is thuggish. A disturbing reminder perhaps. But it  highlights our lack of nastiness.

I think most who see that video clip will find it disturbing how none of our teammates attacked Buddy after that.

It feels like we’ve worked our way up to finally be a Richmond (pre success).

Surely you are not talking about the Nev Jetta tackle over the  boundary line???

Buddy has tried to run through him with strength but Nev dived at him and hit his head into buddy’s shoulder (nearly from behind) during the attempted tackle.

Courergous act by Nev but buddy hasn’t done anything wrong.

Unless their is another incident dent I can’t recall??

Vent your anger here first (responsibly). We listen....sort of. Save the draft, you never know, we might still get to September.

They were 2 men down and we let them control the footy and chip it around. Our brainless leaders kept bombing it to Aliir and Heeney. We should have been controlling the footy and making them run at us - tiring them out.

We also kept turning over the footy like under 12s. When they got a run on we had no idea what to do. Its happened 6 times this year and our coaching panel are clueless on how to deal with it.

Forget the kicking, the above is the reason we will go nowhere even if we do make it. No footy IQ amongst anyone playing.

Agreed Jnr but my point is our game plan lacks smarts, it is all about us, not about playing for the situation. We are attack at all costs and depend perhaps inordinately on an average conversion rate in front of goal. We have all the deficiencies you mentioned and more but hope to cover them through total attack and scoring pressure. This is Goodwin’s blueprint I think.

It has been demonstrated to work against inferior sides but......

Anyone who thinks we lost because of our kicking for goal is clueless.

watch the second quarter. watch our defensive awareness (or lack thereof). Watch the latest All Access video on the AFL website.

The club hasn't played finals in 11 years, we continue to buy memberships...watching that [censored] is infuriating. It was round 23 all over again. They were two down on the bench ffs. We are in year 5 of a rebuild. we mark the ball at half back with 90 seconds left, and look for a short pass. How dense can you be? How much of a loser can you be?

To make finals we have to -- in two weeks -- break every stereotype that has clouded the club for 50 years. We haven't done it in 5 decades. How are we going to do it in 2 weeks?

Clueless?  According to you the reason  we lost because of something that happened 50 years ago and not because we were 4.14.

We really are a very passive club. There is no hard edge to take us to finals. We were playing 3 men down with Spargo, Garlett and Hunt as non- contributors. Goodwin needed to show some dissatisfaction with the performance, instead he let them off the hook. Pathetic really.

The clips I saw of Goodwins presser were fine. He is trying to nurture this young group and get them to focus on what they can control and try and instil belief that they can do it. Going off chop and calling players out like Neeld or Blight would not have been the right move.

I simply don't listen to them Dr. After 54 years in the wilderness all I want to hear is that we won because......

I have heard ever other bit of coach speak more than I need.

It seems a lot of people are big fans of Goodwin. I'm on the fence. If we make finals this year I'll be more convinced.

If given the choice between Goodwin next year or grabbing Clarkson, I know who I'd be throwing buckets of cash at.  There are coaches out there getting max output from inferior lists. Goodwin is not one of those coaches. In fact, I think we have under performed again this year.

My biggest issue is the lack of learning from game to game. We've had a lot of close matches this year, yet we repeat pretty much the same mistakes in each one. We are bloody lucky Betts missed that easy shot two weeks ago, or we would have lost that game as well.

If the two Cats games go in our favour have we still underperformed? We would be sitting on 14 wins and 3rd on the ladder.

What are you going to say?

We lost a game by 9 points in which we kicked 10.18.  We are 7th on the ladder with two games left.

Remember during the Crows game when Fritsch kicked a goal and Goodwin was almost in tears in the box?  The club is in good hands.  The coach loves the club and players and wants nothing more than to win.

Lets see how the last two games play out.

I don't deal in Ifs and Buts. What if Betts kicked that goal 3 weeks ago?

The facts are, we have lost too many close games and have not learnt from those. We also lost to St Kilda who are rubbish and we haven't won a single high-pressure game.

We have improved significantly, no doubt, but not making finals in 2018 is a big big failure.

In the interests of accuracy, part of what you said was " Anyone who thinks we lost because of our kicking for goal is clueless.  "

Now, it's true it might not be the only reason, but the numbers don't lie - turn 4.14 around and the discussion is academic.

I blame the inaccuracy first. Whether its root cause is lack of composure, whatever, end result, bad kicking, bad footy.

Yes I did

Quote

To make finals we have to -- in two weeks -- break every stereotype that has clouded the club for 50 years. We haven't done it in 5 decades. How are we going to do it in 2 weeks?

Nothing that happened 50 years ago has any bearing on the next 2 weeks or the path this group at the club is taking over the next few years.  Jesse Hogan didn't miss easy shots on the weekend because Simon Eishold missed in the 87 Prelim and we didn't narrowly miss the finals last year because Bobby Skilton's team did in 1976.

There is a whole new regime at the club - President and Board, CEO and staff, Coach and Football Department, playing list. - creating their own history. And I am very confident we're in the start of a very successful era.

You don't have the self-awareness or perspective to understand that the stereotype that has clouded the club for 50 years is you and supporters like you.  That the only place that there is a link between Norm Smith's sacking and what happened on Sunday is in your mind.  And the only concern I have is that you and supporters like you could actually be close enough to the club to infect it with your losing culture.

We are a young club that is learning to win big matches the hard way.  You would be well served to actually listen to what Simon Goodwin says instead of the voices of doom in your head.

I was thinking about this this morning.

What's your level of confidence for MFC to win a flag if

- Goodwin is coaching? (Mine is close to 0, and that's informed by the last two seasons, more than any feelings about yesterday's game, which I'm mostly circumspect about as I completely expected capitulation.)

- Clarkson is coaching? (Mine would be a lot higher, e.g. 100% in next 5 years).

- Choose your favourite coaching prospect or change to the coaching team (+ Caracella etc etc:

Hawks supporters were calling for Clarkson's head early in his coaching career. Food for thought.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
