Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Omissions from JLT:

Weid was given 3 games to prove his readiness, which I believe he did not. We cannot afford to have Weid and Spencer in our forward line, as they both provide very little if they don't mark it. Spencer has looked better in that regard and also gives Gawn a great chop out.

Harmes struggled to have an impact in his 3 games, which means he will now have to fight back through the magoos.

Trengove for the obvious reasons.

Garland again proved to be too costly by foot, and isn't much of an improvement on Oscar in the 1on1s.

---------------

FB: Jetta - McDonald - Melk

HB: Hibbo - Oscar - Hunt

C: Lewis - N.Jones - Stretch

HF: Trac - Hogan - Kent

FF: Garlett - Spencer - Watts

R: Gawn - Salem - Viney

I: Clarry - Brayshaw - Tyson - Bugg

E: Garland (if Jetta/Hibb doesn't get through the weekend) Harmes (if Kent/Tyson doesnt get through) Weid (because hes close to 22)

If we had our pic of fit players, I would switch Melksham for Bugg and add Frost into the backline mix. But I doubt Frost will get up in time and its a risk playing three underdone players (Frost, Jetta and Hibberd) all in the same side.

yep unfortunately I think you are right. not everyone starts like a Hogan. I still want to do do more than Cameos for casey this year and become a four quarter player. He looks a natural footballer with ball in hand but is ineffective when he doesn't have it.

No time is unbeatable and st kilda are very beatable.  we need the coaching staff to breakdown st kilda's game plan and slow them up first of all.  What killed us where easy turnovers (Kicking across the ground down back and in the middle) against west coast and they strolled into goals.

We tidy our disposal up snd come to play and we will beat the Saints

Now that the JLT has come to an end, here's my 22 heading into round 1:

B            Jetta          O Mac        Hibberd

HB         Lewis          T Mac         Hunt

C          Brayshaw     Jones        Hogan/Riewoldt

HF        Petracca      Watts          Vince

FF         Garlett         Gawn         Weideman

Foll        Spencer      Oliver          Viney

Int      Stretch       Melksham      Salem       Bugg

Notes -

Hibberd and Jetta need to come in if we're any chance. They're both sure and steady with ball in hand and and play unsociable, combative and hard footy which we'll need against the Saints. As others have already mentioned, Goodwin may have other ideas re: Jetta. Something I don't agree with. I think he's an extremely important ingredient to our back six. Billings and Lonie are types that he'd suit perfectly. Generally he's a really good decision maker. Hibberd is a no-brainer providing he gets through the Casey game. He can take Membrey, provide good coverage as a third-man up and his foot is a weapon. We need him in the side.

Kent and Tyson - Can't see either cracking a game round 1. Kent has missed too much footy with this back injury and considering he's not in the most amazing shape, I think he could be a liability if he came in rusty, underdone and not up to fitness. Garlett is risky enough and we can only afford one small forward position to an underdone player. Tyson just doesn't cut it for me at this stage of the pre-season. For someone in a full-time footballing environment, you'd allow a couple of mis-kicks in a JLT game of footy without saying much. But Tyson literally gave the ball straight to the opposition on several occasions against West Coast. In awful positions. If he'd been prolific with his inside work or perhaps hit the scoreboard or played strongly in some other facet of the game, then he may be considered. But he was a liability against West Coast. Slow two-way runner, butchered it plenty and wasn't prolific enough inside. We can't afford that sort of player against a quick and slick St Kilda at Etihad. Oliver, Brayshaw and Viney are all better prepared and in better form. Unlucky for Dom.

Hogan/Roo - Posters may think I'm bat-[censored] crazy on this one, but we need to play horses for courses in this game. We're at their venue, slick deck, slick team, hard and fast runners. Our team structure needs modifications if we're going to beat them. Think David and Goliath. I just can't see us going head to head with them on that deck thinking we'll out play them at their game. We simply aren't skilled enough throughout our side and St Kilda won't not turn up to round 1.

Which is why I want Hogan to at least start up the field on Riewoldt. Give him a task to go head to head with a great and watch him salivate at the challenge. It allows us to play the Spencer/Gawn combo and whilst I agree Spencer hasn't done 'enough' to demand a spot, I think it's time Gawn takes that forwardline role seriously and really imposes himself on this game. He could ignite us in this game. Carlisle to Gawn, Brown to one of Watts/Weed leaves them vulnerable. Especially if Hoges can take advantage on a counter attack.

I think that if we started with a bang in the midfield, it would really [censored] with them positionally and we could start playing the game on our terms. Spencer would need to play his heart out against Hickey and we'd need to be on fire in the middle. But that can happen.

There are plenty of runners in that side, most of whom have positional versatility which we need.

People may think there's no chance we'll line up like that but it's the only way I can see us getting up against this mob.

Amost no chance to happen but I like the way you're thinking. No doubt he has the tank to run up on a wing. Do we need to be throwing our plan A out the window in round 1? Probably not but I do see how come the first bounce seeing Hogan on the wing would certinly put them straight onto the back foot. Makes Roo become super accountable and at worst case if Hogan is clunking them on the wing every time we get a rebound 50 it would force either Brown or Carlisle to come up and play as a wingman. A prospect they wouldn't really want to see.

Fun thought. I like seeing the outside the box plans that have a bit of merit.  Even if they arnt likely to happen

vince - 86% tog @ 62.5% de

Vince is one of my favourite players but this is simply not good enough for a player who's often used to distribute the ball off half back.

It's time to put him back on the ball, potentially as a tagger from time to time, with instructions to amass possessions and kick goals from the forward 50 if and when possible. He won our B&F and was nearly AA when last used in this role.

He regularly sucks when used off half back.

You may be right RB ... if we're looking at rotating 3 distributors off half-back then a trio of Lewis, Salem & Jones could work better.  Vince is at his best when used in the way that you've described.

Lewis & Salem both seem naturally suited as distributers whilst I reckon Jones can grow into the role in his latter years.  All 3 can all play midfield roles as well of course.

Vince's clearance work whilst untidy at times is also quite effective especially when we just need the ball heading our way (against the better teams)  Winning the clearances by a decent margin usually points to a win.

It's not like I was harbouring any secret inside info. And in the same circumstances I would probably look it up before I originally posted a comparison of midfield numbers.

Although it was evident that we rotated more than the Eagles and are perhaps looking to emulate the Dogs.

Pedersen in for the weid makes absolute  sense and this point , weid is the not really up to it just yet , he's a long term proposition. I just can't see why they haven't given pedo a chance during JLT to feature in rd 1. On top of this we need one of garlett or Kent to keep up the forward pressure against the saints , otherwise they'll sling shot on our zone defence and we'll all be cringing when Roo is running 25m off  tmac into an open goal .... again... surely the coaching panel have studied what went wrong both times last year !!!

Jetta and hibberd would be also welcome inclusions down back

Agree.

Vince does a lot right but I feel like those moments rarely, if ever, occur in the back half of the ground.

Your 2017 round 1 team. Jetta is in our best 22 but something is clearly not right with him so give him a week in the VFL and he'll walk straight back in when 100%.

some people here have clearly never seen Jetta play before

He's not an extreme possesion getter. He doesn't take on 5 players with 3 bounces. He doesn't take speccies. He doesn't put forward and kick goals. He's not an elite kick.

We know what we are going to get from him. He is going to lock down the oppositions best small forward and make sure he has a tough game. He's also going be a leader and the anchor in the backline and direct some of the more inexperienced players. Structurally he is VERY important

He had an early injury niggle. The fact that people are saying there was some sort of "issue" is just dumb

Feel free to disagree with me, but he is a super important player and a great example of a player who plays his role to perfection, without being a hero

He will play round 1

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
