In all seriousness im very intrigued with Liam Hulett. Drafted on the basis of 3 Tac games in 2 years. Alot of injuries but apparently was a serious up and coming gun in the under 16s champs for Vic Country. Big solid unit who has already played senior footy for Bonbeach so maybe he could be a smokey for an early debut before the likes of Sam Weideman?

Glad my boy Mitch White is having a ripper summer. Huge upside.

I had a really good chat to Jason Taylor about him, first picked him up at under 14 level and have been keeping tabs on him, because of his physique, felt that the missing year would not be a problem, had a couple of games at the end of this season and showed no ill effects and the same attributes he showed at under 16s, so picking him up was not an issue, scares a few of the boys in the boxing ring so I am told......Roos is also a big fan

 I think Mitch White will make it. He is another one of those competitors that Roos bangs on about. Comments from his last season read for a lesson in football development. Started in the VFL 2nds, promoted to the VFL senior team and got progressively better through the year finally making an AFL debut in the last round.

That got me interested too but I think what we need is players that can identify when to play on and when to hold things up. I'm thinking/hoping the younger players will be all over this.

Yup. He and Max King remained on the rookie list from last season while Harmes and vandenBerg were promoted.

I forgot to mention that if you get the chance, you should check out the video of Melbourne's last win. It wasn't all that long ago but if memory serves me well, early in the second quarter, Jesse Hogan is lining up for an important goal against GWS on a forward flank at Etihad and there, clearly in the background, spurring him on in the sparse crowd are none other than Satyr and Mrs Satyr. The scooter is not visible.

I'm convinced that goal was the catalyst for our great victory so congrats on your role.

On checking the vision, it wasn't a goal. Hogan missed that one but it put us in front by a point (hence my euphoria) but thanks for your contribution - every bit of enthusiasm in an Etihad lowest on record crowd helps.

Just watched that quarter and found it a good reminder of how well our list is shaping up with White, Harmes and O. Mac all showing plenty. Also realised what a beast Maxxy Gawn is - could well be our most important player next to Hogan.

Another example of our improved list.

White has played an AFL game and looks to have a fair AFL career ahead of him, Michie has played games at AFL level, King has showed improvement and is a possible AFL player of the future, with some physical development and Wagner has played senior footy in a lower level competition. Smith is the longshot of the group.

Not long ago when I wrote that piece on the Weidemans, I checked out some stats and I was amazed that key forwards like Murray Weideman and Norm Smith were barely taller than 6 foot in the old scale and shorter than many of the midfielders running out there at Casey yesterday morning. Blokes of that height never had to do so much running in an entire season, let alone what they have to in January these days. And on top of the running, there's a lot of strength work to be done as well which was demonstrated by some pictures I saw from earlier in the week of young Sam contesting a mark against 20 year old Jesse Hogan. 

 

Smithy's teams were always imposing in terms of height and size, not to mention skills and discipline so it was good reading that part of DeePick's report. I did make it down to Casey Fields at this time two years ago with my grandson on a very hot summer's morning (the only other people there were from the Salem family) and I don't remember as much evidence of the height and size factor then, yet I came away wearing the same rose coloured glasses that I have at this point in every season. Perhaps, it might be justified this time around.

 

Welcome back Jack, I hope you enjoyed the Caribbean where with luck the cruise proved to soothe the nerves a little after a hectic pre Christmas period where everyone's nerves were a little on edge and some poor decisions were made.  Also we've missed your sharp insights and wonderful recollections.

I particularly liked this post and felt compelled to respond.  I'm heartened to know that you think in 50 years we've come a long way in our pre season training and I'm wondering if you can put your finger on why.  Could it be the greater professionalism of the players, the fact that pre season is significantly longer than it was in the past, the better diet of the players, the greater focus on development, the better pathways that exist, the improvements in video and other electronic advancements over the period, the greater scrutiny the players face, advances in science and medical procedures that allow players to train more and stay fitter longer or something else I've missed? Perhaps the boots are better. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

How do you think John Nichols would go in the ruck now?  Would Stuart Spencer and Ian Ridley be the exceptional players now they were then?  Did Graeme Wise start the trend of teams only playing one ruckmen?  Where do you think players like Barry Bourke got past the Norm Smith philosophy of "imposing" size?  Great memories when you start thinking about it and interesting to discuss.  I'd appreciate your insights.

Thanks Bob. There's enough there to fill three or four threads here but most of the answers are fairly obvious as touched upon by you. Times change, methods and technology change, peoples' shapes and sizes change.  Unfortunately, our club has been pretty much slow on the uptake because like many of the places we visited, we've been run like a banana republic in the past 5 decades. One thing is for certain, there's no such thing as the Norm Smith Curse - our problems have all been man made (or should I say) person made.

My optimism now stems mainly from the fact that we appear to have stability at the top these days.

And at the sides too.

Stable admin plus professional coaching setup ( with what it seems is a focus on development) - the last piece in the puzzle is for the blokes kicking the ball to continue improving.

I saw a pretty ugly 2014 as expected, a tangible improvement last year and looking for more strides forward in 2016. 

I share your optimism (albeit guarded, as I have been a jilted lover one too many times).
