  1. Yeah umm no. The last time he was involved seriously with the club, he brought Mark Neeld in. Garry is a passionate MFC supporter, but he should be nothing more or nothing less.

  2. If I had to make a prediction, I think we will 1) Smash Adelaide - we will be fuming and they are rubbish 2) There will be plenty of back slapping and comments about how that was our brand etc etc 3) Get rolled by North

  3. This is a [censored] poor post. Criticism for his coaching is warranted. Getting personal like this is weak as p iss.

  4. May was great in his interview. He said the sentence I’ve been waiting 2 years to hear... ’We know we’re not going to win the game by kicking long down the line’ Which then begs the question why do they do it so often?

  5. @Elegt correct me if i am wrong here? I don't think you entirely understand how list management works do you..

  6. We have enough talent. We don't have a decent coach. He should have resigned in shame after the Geelong game Goodwin: 'We couldn't get the ball off them' and "we'll be better prepared next time". Seriously a full time coach saying that. Disgusting.

  7. Earlier in the week I spoke with someone in an incidental work conversation who had been working for an AFL club coaching panel pre covid. He has subsequently been stood down. I don't really know him at all but he noticed that I'm a Demon fan from a top I was wearing in our online meet. He was trying to sell me stuff so he was obviously looking for an "in". We had a bit of footy chit chat and he asked me about my thoughts on the Demons. Then I asked his. He said Gawn is the best ruckman in the comp, and quite possibly the best player, but he plays with "peanuts". He said if Gawn went to a side like Geelong they'd be unbeatable. In his view our midfield fall into one or more of the following categories: double grabbers (fumblers); poor skills; poor decision makers. He said every one of them had at least one of those issues and some had more. He said Gawn gives his midfield first look way more than any other ruck in the competition but the midfield either fumble it, butcher it or pass it on to somebody in a worse position almost all of the time. I asked him about Petracca and he pointed out a very small sample size to go on to quantify his improvement, but that he appeared to have made himself a better player by working harder on both fitness and decision making i.e clearing the immediate area with possession distance. He said the way to beat Melbourne is basically concede the tap, understand where Gawn is dropping it and wait for the midfield to either fumble or turn it over. Down the line, add numbers to any contest with Gawn to neutralize his aerial impact and know that when the ball hits the deck the opposition is much better than 50-50 to scoot away with it. He said neither Gold Coast or Hawthorn covered Gawn properly when he dropped back and that's why we looked so good. Brisbane did and while Gawn had solid numbers, his actual game influence was nullified. He reckons every team playing Melbourne spends at least half their prep time on Gawn. I watched last night with this conversation in mind and it played out pretty much as above. Even Hinkley and Wines post match saying how much time they put into Gawn. He didn't offer any solutions, just pointed out the issues, which unfortunately seem to compound.

  8. I really like Garry in the media. He clearly understands and articulates our problems on field, whereas I listened to some absolute dribble from Derm today that made me think he hasn’t watched a single Melbourne game all year. But there is no chance he is coaching Melbourne.

  11. "Not everyone has to agree with your opinion" is something I see you say a lot around here Saty... And yet here you are are again trying to get everyone to conform to your views on how everything is going. If you don't like like what you are reading, then may I suggest you follow your own advise and take your sanctimonious dribble elsewhere?

  14. Seriously, had enough of this agenda against him, fair enough you didnt like the decision with Neeld, he has said he got it wrong, you dont even have to like him, but he hasnt ruined the club and to suggest otherwise is just ignorance of the highest order. This is the problem with a large portion of teh supporter base, they look for blame everywhere else in stead of teh core of the club.

  15. I was told this by an ex assistant coach at the Dees back in 2015 when we bumped into him while we were having beers and a BBQ just before new years eve in Corowa. He comes up every year during the summer period by the Murray with his family. Melbourne sought out Ross Lyon, Michael Malthouse and also Alistair Clarkson at the time. The theme was to go for an experienced coach as the board felt the players needed a fair shake up by a good hard taskmaster. When they spoke to Ross Lyon he declined as he had already told the club that he had committed to the saints. Garry Lyon and Ross Lyon shared the same manager in Craig Kelly, and Kelly even told Lyon that Ross had verbally committed to the saints but just hadn't signed as of yet. Ross then behind everyone's back has a secret meeting with the dockers and the rest is history. Even his manager Craig Kelly was caught completely off guard. Melbourne wanted him, but Ross had bigger things going on. Clarkson was offered a huge package deal. Garry Lyon and to a degree Stynes really pushed Clarkson hard, but he was contracted at the time and knew that a dynasty was only around the corner. Lyon then spoke to Malthouse. Mick had already confirmed that he was taking time off coaching (this was in 2011 after he finished up at the pies) and instead was looking at going into the media. It was there that Malthouse Apparently gave a glowing and raving endorsement about one of his young and up and coming assistant coaches in Mark Neeld. After the Dees missed out on their targeted experience men, they then changed their direction and interviewed the likes of Brendan McCartney, Alan Richardson and Mark Neeld. The rest is history as they say. All I will say is Garry Lyon tried what every melbourne supporter wanted at the time and that was go for the experienced coach we needed. Unfortunately we just ran out of options it seems. I dont blame Garry for the Neeld [censored] up.

  16. Nothing to do with my thoughts on him as a player, all to do with your disgraceful comments about someone doing a favour for their dying mate. You go sit next to the bed of your cancer-ridden best mate and tell them "no" as they beg you to help. Stop trying to be an outraged internet person and be a grown up.

  17. You may be right but Lyon to my knowledge was not on the board or employed in the FD, he was asked to provide a consulting role to advise on coach selection. Consultants advise, management ultimately wears the decision. By the way I can’t remember all the detail but I was comfortable with the Bailey appointment, I reckon he could coach but was under resourced and undermined by Schwab and I still believe the Neeld appointment was influenced by Schwab who wanted a newby he could control. No way he would have accepted a Sheedy appointment in my opinion. In short the problem was Schwab and his interference in the FD, specifically in coaching appointments and draft selections.

  18. Garry had already said he didn't have the experience or knowledge to be involved, then his dying best mate asked him to step in. You're criticizing him for that with pretty over the top language. That's a pathetic effort IMO.

  19. FFS he was asked for advice, that may have been rubbish but the buck stops with the decision makers at the club at the time. Schwab, the Board and Jimmy have to wear those decisions. To me when looking for the root cause for that disastrous period I always end up looking at Schwab, Connelly to some extent and unfortunately Jimmy who didn’t realise Schwab was a toxic influence on recruiting and football operations.

  23. I agree with the narrative on here. I have voiced in the past that our media department has been the worst in the AFL by a mile. Ever since Benny Gibson has jumped on board its given it a whole new dynamic. So well done to you Benny and the rest of the media team. Haven't had the chance to watch the Mahoney interview. Will now.

  28. Well, there's the nail in the coffin, @Elegt. You're on the same page as the mighty O. Time to pack up shop. In terms of constructive criticism. I think Taylor's done a pretty good job, particularly with our earlier picks.

  31. Another moment to hope the players don't have the attitude of some supporters, I guess. We're less than halfway into the season, with a game in hand, and we're two games out of the eight Yet to play the entire bottom four, but have played the entire top four (and obviously don't have to play anyone twice) The Port game was a debacle, but if anyone needs reminding what a haywire and volatile season this is, aside from needing their head checked they can take a quick look at the Bulldogs, West Coast or Collingwood. Our next two games are against the bottom two teams. They are must win games but they are 'should win' games too. Then Collingwood for what is likely the proverbial 8-point game. Speaking of 8-point games, we are still to play all of Collingwood, Western Sydney, Bulldogs, Bombers and Saints. For all the misery yesterday, if you think that was the best we can deliver you're just being melodramatic. Destiny in our own hands. Far, far too early to write off the season, even if it wasn't a weird one.

  32. Some good points and truth in that. Our biggest strength (Gawn) is also our biggest weakness. Teams just focus on your 1 wood, remove its power and we're ordinary. Id prefer to see Jackson take centre square bounces. He won't win many, but can add as a 2nd midfielder in there. OR, why not Gawn AND Jackson in the centre square. Jackson at 200cm can cleanly take Gawns taps ABOVE oppo midfielders, and get hands away to a player outside. Where's the creativity Goodwin?

  33. Heroes wear helmets!!! Harmes needs to be played back into form and stay there. He's the best tagger in the comp. Half back, no. Wing, no. HFF, no. Take the number 1 mid every week and let's see what happens. Hell, might even win a clearance.

  34. So the topic is "so I think I worked it out". Are you saying the problem is the fans? Or there is no problem? Are you telling me not to watch MFC games? I think the obvious problem remains our forward line, the lack of connection and conversion of inside 50's to score. Give us you thoughts on this? Please don't tell me how to use my time. I'm an adult and can choose my own behaviour without your mastery.

  35. We played Port in Adelaide on a 4 day break. Calm the farm. Everyone knows it was a tres ordinaire performance. It was excruciating to watch. That said, some of you seem to think you’re the only ones who managed to detect this and are calling it out, self anointed Don Trump genius style. There were definitely some worrying signs, but I’ll reserve judgement until the next performance. We’re in unchartered waters here with this rapid fire, arcade game style hub competition at the moment. I reckon the club knows where we’re at - and it’s not as bad as many here seem to think. It’s a pity we didn’t beat the Lions - because we should have.

  36. Gee what a lot of twaddle in this topic A couple of weeks ago and up to end of Brisbane game, we were on the right track, then we put in a really poor performance Port and Brisbane are the two form sides of the comp, look what Brisbane did to the Bombers tonight It's a glitch, we have a couple of games coming up to put it right We have a few players in Fritsch, Brayshaw and Harmed who are not performing at the top, nothing whatsoever to do with contracts, just slightly off in form, with the examples of Hibberd and Jetta, they may be omitted against Adelaide The centre bounce and stoppage need to be changed up, if you think the coaches don't know this We scored one really good end to end goal against Port, to show we can play that way Both the Bulldogs and Essendon put in shockers this week, we are not alone Quite simple for all the complainers who are sick of it, the players, the coach etc if are based interstate from where the games are being played, don't watch the [censored] games

  38. Back from a weeks ban and just wanted to get two things off my chest. 1 - Team selection was diabolical and it was obvious we would get flogged as soon as the teams were named. Instead of dropping an extra inside mid (Harmes or Brayshaw or both) we bought in Tom Sparrow, on top of Nathan Jones the week before. Goodwin wont be happy until we have 22 inside mids out there. And the Tom McDonald selection was pathetic. He gave exactly what you'd expect, sweet [censored] all. 2 - The amount of posters who were happy with the Brisbane loss.... just pathetic to witness. 56 years of failure and we are into Goodwins 5th season and supporters still think losses are ok. We had the game for the taking and blew it as usual.

  42. Early in the second (I think) Shiel not only gets tackled high, he gets tackled to the ground when not in possession of the ball. The umpire was only 2 metres away right behind the action with perfect view and calls play on. FMD, as much as I loathe the peptides, pathetic umpiring riles me more.

  49. Wow that is up there with the dumbest thing I've heard, why would you want to trade high in such a compromised draft year? Clarry is still relatively young and we should be seeing the best of him in the next 2-3 seasons. He needs someone to work with him on his disposal (particularly his kicking), but he's not even close to his ceiling yet.

  50. Probably not too early to resume transmission here. A watch for tomorrow . Valley R3 No1. ABN. The fellas at work are pleased with her work leading into her return. Decent each way odds. A lot of speed on her inside is a bit of a worry but hopefully she shows the class we saw early in her first prep.
