I see a split happening in the event that we know a player we like is going to be available at our next selection. If not then probably not worth it. Same as when we traded up for North's pick 8 then slid to 10 with pick 28 coming back ourway in 2019. That allowed us to get Pickett, who we were always selecting anyway, and Rivers. That's why I'm for a split if the club sees a scenario like that unfolding. 9 down to 11 and one of Richmond's pick in the early 20s. Get the same player and add an extra high quality pick. Richmond would potentially be enticed to do the deal as there are a couple competitors, as highlighted, above that could swoop in and take a player they like ahead of them. 3 picks within 24 in this draft is enticing but if we take 5 and 9 to the draft I'll be equally as happy.19 points

I remember that Geelong final. He looked the real deal. Wasn't to be unfortunately. Best of luck Sam in the next stage of your life.13 points

Still has those highlights in the Geelong final which is a lot more than (I assume) we all on here have!13 points

IF... Damien Barrett wasn't a longtime hack journalist who has built up a large list of enemies within the AFL community, because of his rubbish journalism, and braindead hot take opinion pieces... Then... He may occasionally get info right, and not have to resort to, petty, childish sarcasm when a football club makes him look like a fool. Mess of a bloke.10 points

Good luck to the weid , great bloke Average footballer. One of Taylor's rare missis.9 points

Sam was always going to take time. The more time that went on the more he seemed to get in his own head which worked the other way. His first year at Casey looked great and then it all went downhill. Sam had that awesome elim final against Geelong. I'll always remember him for that mark over Blicavs in the first and the look of shock on Blicavs face. I was there that night with 95k people and reckon I've watched the highlights a minimum of 50 times This is how I will choose to remember him.8 points

like most i thought 'wow' after that first final against geelong in 2018 he never played a game like that ever again in just his 18th game: 24 disposals (10 contested) - 12 kicks, 12 handballs 7 marks (3 contested) 3 goals straight 4 tackles never came close to those sorts of numbers again8 points

I wouldn't split back, take 5 and 9 and get best available. With the Tassie picks coming soon we need the best young kids now. Another reason why not getting Houston was great. 5 & 9 could be the most important picks we have done in a long time.8 points

Collingwood can have him. I never wanted another HBF - that is one position we have covered. As for Trac: he may have had issues with the club. So? They may be justified, they may not. He might be a top bloke, he might not. I will never see him in the same light again: he apparently was prepared to go to Collingwood - to stand in the circle and sing their song with his arms over the shoulders of Brayden Maynard. I am NOT impressed with that. Any team mate of Gus's who would contemplate that loses me. And as for culture: it is noticeable that BBB stayed at Melbourne and still does. He has the score on the board as a person who speaks up when things are wrong.7 points

IF.... Damien Barrett was respect by his colleagues... THEN Then he wouldn't have that godawful but appropriate nickname.7 points

Contract for next year, so wasn't traded. Wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. He's got poor attitude and work ethic. He battled away in the VFL for most of the year despite the Pies crying out for forward targets due to injuries to Mihocek and McStay. Struggled in VFL, kicking 10+ goals less than our own youngster Jefferson. Probably best to close this thread and burn it with fire.6 points

Pathetic lack of accountability— Not ONE journo mentions how Trac is now re engaged at club and was super excited with getting pick 5/9 nah nah OR fact even Claz’s MUM called out the lies of media re him wanting to leave — it’s just downright vitriolic tripe and the lot of em well thank next year for helping motivate and galvanise our playing group. Loved Tommo this morning telling CORN that basically if you went down to club you’d be shocked at how close everyone is etc but again that was brushed off even though Tommo could easily throw us under bus after being delisted he basically said he’s unsure what all fuss is about..6 points

May have been mentioned by others (pardon the bad pun), but will never forget the ripping game he played against Geelong in early 2021 after Hawkins smashed Steve's eye socket. Winning that game was so important for our belief and early season momentum and Tommo did more than just hold up an end in May's absence. I will personally remember Tommo as a contributing member of of premiership squad, not as frindge player in our team. Having players of his calibre as depth that season was huge. As a side note, I still can't believe that Hawkins didn't get suspended for that clumsy hit on May and really does make me think that we get harder done by that other charmed clubs/players. Kossie only has to look at someone and scare them into falling over and he is garrenteed a 3 week suspension.6 points

Damien Barrett really comes across as a spiteful tantrum'ing child in that latest episode...what a mess of a bloke.5 points

Some keyboard warriors taking the opportunity to land a few kicks, pathetic on your part. In the draft there was supposedly 3 of the best young talls in a while, all pundits, commentators etc agreed, Josh Schache, Aaron Francis and Sam Weideman, all 3 went top 10, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Interestingly the knock on all 3 is aggression, perhaps the game evolved too quickly for them.5 points

Doesn’t like the things he heard about Melbourne, but walks to Collingwood with De Goey, their President stepping down, the CEO accused of continuing racism (especially damning given their recent history), Bolton running out the door as quick as he could, and Leppitsch acting like a complete maniac. Also told Port fans 6 weeks ago he was staying put. I get that we’ve handled ourselves extremely poorly over the last 12 months, but Dan can’t take any higher ground here. I’m glad we didn’t trade pick 5 and a future first for him. He’s a great player, but we could help solve much bigger issues with 2 highly competitive mids in this draft.5 points

Armstrong at 5 is still too much of a reach. I don't rate him at all, I'd be disappointed if we picked him at 5.5 points

Congratulations on making it to AFL level football, Sam. And anyone good enough to play for the mighty Red and Blue deserves the highest of praise.5 points

This article from Barrett sounds like a petulant ten year old, “clap clap”? Pathetic. It’s not even accurate, the “positive spin” on our trade period is that we got pick 9 and go into a super draft with two top ten picks. You can argue we overpaid, that our first round pick next year will be higher than 9 because we’re going to have a terrible year (I disagree). But this is clearly a pathetic dummy spit that the “ last minute Geelong offer” that the club was going to “have to take” that he was banging on about in his last one of these sliding doors, never came to pass. Also that his shots at Pert haven’t landed yet, our “mess of a club” is completing its reviews, ensuring due process and going about its business. Trac called Lamb to congratulate him on pick 9, while Clayton loves the club and will come out and say so. Meanwhile Tim Lamb sat and had three sausage rolls on the last day of trade week and talked about pick swaps as Damo looks like a fool because his narrative, that Lamb was lying and Clayton was desperate to leave looks less true than, Richo, Green, Goodwin and Lambs narrative that they were never trading him and while Geelong had Clayton’s interest he was never going and was ok with that. Barrett clearly, clearly, hates our CEO personally, and hates our club and is not impartial with his reporting, remember that next time.5 points

Leaving aside the petty sledge by an AFL employee (i mean an afl employee calling a club a mess? really?), the reality is once we got pick 5 we weren't going after Houston. And nor should we. Pick 5 is gold. On his Houston sledge, it is a classic example of the eye watering lack of self awareness by the media. Media endelessly bangs on about tracc, oliver, koz and issues at the club. All stay. Petracca apparently 'desperate' to leave - but no so desperate that he ensured it was not possible by not being open to being traded to a club with top 5 draft picks to offer as part of a trade Player says Oh, my decision to come to the dees influenced by all the noise about the club. Where there's smoke. Media - we're just reporting the facts. We're neutral. What a joke.5 points

Think he is perfect for us. Our midfield being fit and healthy is: Trac, Clary, Viney, Rivers and Sparrow With sprinkles or Kossie, Salem and Kolt. This is exactly what we need in our reserves that can play at the level when called upon. DFA so wouldn't be asking for much either4 points

Always enjoyable seeing someone take a big screamer over that chick from Bend it like Beckham.4 points

Come on. Seriously. We won trade week by a country mile. The rest aren't even in the competition. At the start of trade week we'd lost three of our best players and one of our best leaders. By the end we'd recruited Petracca, Oliver, Pickett, got a replacement/upgrade for ANB who can run faster, longer and isn't a turnover king 😎, got break glass in an emergency ruck back up for Maxxy, saved ourselves from giving up this year and next year's first rounders for a half back flanker who went elsewhere for half the price, traded up to get pick 9 so by the end of the draft we'll have the next Petracca and Oliver. What's wrong with these amateurs. They have absolutely no idea. Trade week table. 1. Melbourne . . . . . 2. who cares 3. who cares4 points

Sam. He was one of the nicest young blokes. Always very generous with his time for a chat and a photos with my kids. Honestly he had the talent but like others have said, lacked the sheer aggression to be that contested marking key forward. His kicking was fine then seemed to worsen and his confidence went. Hope he moves on to the next stage in life. Will remain a Demon and we will have the 2018 finals to look back on. Good luck Sam.4 points

It should be noted Wade Dersken wasn't involved with the "Whacky Wednesday" antics. Probably another reason he wanted to leave GWS! Just a shame it never worked out during this year's trade period.4 points

Sadly, Sam Weideman just didn't have the aggression and determination to be an AFL forward. He lacked mongrel. Same as Josh Schache. Both were "powder puff princesses" when it came to hardness at the ball. Maybe Collingwood might take a punt getting the Grandson of Murray Weideman over to the Club? Anyway, I know Sam is a "nice bloke" but when it comes to playing as a forward at AFL level you gotta make an impact. The Demons lost patience with him and I guess so did the Bombers now too...4 points

Yes we watched that with great interest last night sounds like Ch9 have a Very Toxic group leading their Culture, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. AFL haven’t covered themselves in glory either standing idly by watching the media personalities piling on to Dees and ignoring much worse cultural issues at other clubs. Grrrrrrrr…!!4 points

JVR 'one grab' depends on whether you have a gorilla hanging all over you. Jefferson....I have see a bunch of twigs with more meat on them than when Jefferson was drafted, they needed to build him up, now man size and I know for a fact he was told to start using it, hence the better end to the season. Turner and Petty, swing players, some teams only have one who can maybe do that, we are blessed with two, 3 if you count Tommy Mc Fullarton no regular AFL football, needs to improve, which he knows, has already seen what happened to Schache. Kentfield big and aggressive, just needs a full preseason, his progress, junior football, WAFL, VFL in less than a year, each a step up,4 points

Of the opinion we keep picks 5 & 9 and get the best kids we can with them, no downgrading please.4 points
-
Soooo...... If Petty and Turner are forwards...... And May gets injured next year...... Who plays on big forwards? Tomo was far from perfect but sometimes you just need a body to temporarily fill a role. And we've shown no interest in Denver Granger-Barras or any other defenders?3 points
-
Far too injury prone for my liking. Would rather the Demons take a chance on Denver Grainger-Barras from Hawthorn. He was pick #6 in the 2020 AFL National Draft and still has a lot of talent and potential. Would rather we snap him away from Carlton too!3 points

Finn O’Sullivan could go pick 1 or up to pick 3. Lalor could go pick 1 or up to 7. Smith could go pick 1 or up to 6. Langford could go pick 1 or up to 9. Tauru could go pick 2 or up to 9. Trainor could go pick 3 or up to 13. Smillie could go pick 4 or up to 11. Reid could go pick 6 or up to 13. Lindsay could go pick 6 or up to 16. Hotton could go pick 9 or up to 18. It’s such an even diverse group3 points

Trade period Report Card Damien Barrett - E - continued to spew the same rubbish year after year and doesn't understand that his opinion is of no relevance Sam McClure - F - damaged his reputation even further making up stories and embellishing others citing sources that cant be revealed due to the sensitive nature of the topic. Tom Morris F (see above)3 points

I don’t care what the media personalities think, definitely a B+ first off - We held our three guns despite media wanting them out to embarrass the club and teach us a lesson??? We got lucky with pick 5, and then Tim Lamb showed us what he is best at and traded in Pick 9. He then bought in the fastest gun from the North, Harry should play R1. He bought in Campbell early to provide ruck relief for Max, Tom won Sandringham’s B&F, so will elevate Casey immediately. He also moved a number of players out of the club to open up spaces for 4-6 players to help the continued rejuvenation of the club. He was handicapped last year as most players were contracted. Personally I feel much happier about 2025 than I did three weeks ago. If that makes me a “Happy Clapper” count me in.3 points
