  1. My mail for those interested. 1. Ben brown is likely to be a dee, money isn’t an issue with this deal it’s agreed in principal. We’ve made our pitch now Ben brown is taking some time to consider his options but we are at the front of the que, despite less money because were a vic based finals contender. 2. We made an approach to Nathan Bassett about joining as our forwards coach but he declined. 3. the club is actively looking to get back into the top 10 of the draft. Have had a keen interest in finlay McRae as lord nev mentioned for some time 4. Clayton Oliver was unhappy. He spoke to the power brokers at the club and he’s fine for now. Wouldn’t wanna have a bad year next year though. 5. issac Smith is going to be a demon. And the hawks know it. It was 50/50 but Adam yze coming appears to have got him to favour joining Melbourne 6. We’ve also made an approach to Tom Phillips. We’d ideally like that to be a straight swap for t Mac. Not sure where that sits.

  3. I worked with David Rennick, as a representative of a corporate client using his firm's property, development and construction expertise, over a number of years in a past life. Serious Dees supporter (our relationship was during the exciting '90s!), central to growing his niche firm to major status, and/but a down to earth regular guy. I expect his worth will be considerable in the new headquarters project.

  4. Well let’s analyse your post. Mismanagement: We contracted 3 players on the back of good years that all of us were desperate to keep. All were happy at the time. All clubs that sign players who lose form are clearly then mismanagers. Deceipt: We got a free agent who has a big tank and played mainly as a wingman. Now with us he is being used in other roles. Clearly the Pies were also deceitful when they recruited their best defender as a forward, but who proved better down back. Misjudgement: Lever, now playing well and doing what he was recruited for. Yes ,a good example of misjudgement.

  5. I have a couple of friends that are close to the admin at the club and in the past I have heard some of the names that are being looked at and chatted to. This year it has been very quiet and there has not been much information to pass on. Everything I have heard is really in the public domain. Preuss and Hannan moving out are deals that MFC believe will be relatively easy to sort out and, as I understand it, will be simple deals standing alone. I have heard that we are into Brown big time but that the situation at Norf has muddied the waters. 60/40 that we get him is what I have been told. Phillips ahead of Isaac Smith is our preference, But a hard hand to pay to ensure we do not miss out on both. Big Macs on the table and not a lot of interest. Oliver is not going anywhere and nor is Brayshaw is what I have been told. As I said, really only what is out there in public. Nothing to back this up but I think there might be a surprise for the MFC with a relatively well known player wanting to come in the door. As I said, I have heard no whispers on this but over the last couple of years we have had some long term nurturing of opposition players pay off for uou and I would be surprised if we have not done a similar thing looking at this year. I hope so.

  6. From a disgruntled North Melbourne supporter: ''If Melbourne get Ben Brown for pick 23 that is such a ridiculous bargain and we are hugely losing that trade. I don't think too many people will be surprised when he comes back next year and wins the Coleman. The bloke is a top 3 full forward in the league, who had a down season in this mess of a year. I wouldn't trade him for a top ten pick but it seems inevitable that we are offloading him for a second rounder, so Melbourne (or whoever gets him) should be absolutely laughing. I've liked a lot of our offseason decisions, and nobody knows what's going on behind closed doors, but this one seems absolutely terrible from an outsiders perspective.''

  12. Even if all Brown does is take away the best defender allowing Weideman and Jackson to develop as second and third talls, it would be a good get. McDonald sadly doesn’t commend a good defender anymore. Brown will, at worse, bring ball to ground giving Pickett and hopefully another small forward that we find somewhere, more opportunities. At best he kicks 30-50 goals and makes us a potent forwardline again. Something we’ve lacked since McDonald was in form.

  15. Most of goodwins problems stem from the fact he doesn’t really have a plan. That’s why we make way too many selection changes and changes to our set up week to week. why we’ve had 3 captains in 4 years why the leadership group has changed every single year he’s been in charge why we’re continually out coached on game day.

  16. Folks might have inappropriate expectations of the Board and its members. Its primary role relates to strategy and governance re football performance, financial performance etc Implementation is the role of Pert and his GM's. So I wouldn't expect to see a specific impact from Green on the football department. That is what a GM Football is for. Several examples of football related board roles from other clubs (Don't know how we work). Note: this isn't an exhaustive list at those clubs. Carlton: Board/sub committee signs off on game plan/strategy and key trades. Geelong: Board/sub committe signs off on List Management strategy. It has governance protocols in place where it reviews/endorses any player contract which is: 1) > than 3 years, 2) a player > than 30 and 3) > than $2m. I would like to think that Greens' role is to review the Board governance protocols around football and other football matters and recommend improvements, if necessary. And work with GM football for regular performance reviews to report back to the Board or a sub committee. For the Board to want a football person on the board signals they think there is work to be done on connections between the football department and the Board. Otherwise it would hint of tokenism which I do not think would happen.

  19. We are paying two defenders (May/Lever) about 11-12% of our salary cap; one who is earning his keep and one who isn't. Add TMac and our salary profile is skewed. All 3 have at least 2 years on their contracts so our salary cap is burdened for a few more years. We also need to re-sign Salem, Oliver, Brayshaw, Weideman, Gawn in the next year or two so we need to keep space in the sal cap for them. And we have some expensive players who probably aren't best 22 eg Tomlinson couldn't hold down the job he was brought in to do, was dropped, came back in defence and may be out of the team again when Petty comes back. Even if Tomlinson stays in the team it is clear we have a disproportionate amount of the sal cap invested in the backline. If Brown wants 3/4 years and we don't move out TMac, they and Lever and May will take up about 20% of our salary cap for at least 2 more years. We are trading players out and will delist some but they are fringe players so probably don't give us enough sal cap space for Brown and others. In a nutshell we have too much of our sal cap invested in too few players some of whom are nowhere near our best players/earning their packages.

  24. It’s good to see GWS getting a taste of their own medicine in losing a player after only 2 years but I have to say I really hate the fact a player can move after 2 years and also nominates a club. I think it’s completely irresponsible on the clubs side who is recruiting him and also shows the character of the player.

  28. Oh without a doubt you need to pick your battles. Daniher was an idiotic move. He was always leaving. Now their bargaining chips are nothing. If Oliver said “guys I hate this place I’m leaving now or next year, make a decision” I would of course trade him while under contract and get max value. But if your best players are even a 2% chance of being swayed and are still giving you their best on the field, you gotta back yourself.

  30. They don't. They are the team that have avoided the bottom 4 the longest. I have this argument all the time with people and generally lose, but most team sports have a few dominant teams and the rest make up the numbers. There are clubs that develop talent only for the bigger clubs to pay massive salaries to bring them across and continue to rule the competition. The AFL has some rules in place to keep this in check which is good and may be as good as it gets. Some people already complain at the equalisation structures the AFL already has in place. It's not easy for the AFL to come out and say they will be continually interfering with the draft or free agency in order to make it harder for the top teams to stay at the top and to constantly look to get the bottom sides back up the ladder. It would be political suicide though, they would get undermined and voted out by the stronger clubs. Also the majority of people don't want it because the majority of people barrack for the top teams. I still maintain that its not just talent that keeps the top teams up the top but development of the talent, retention of good players, well structured playing lists on well structured pay that is equitable to talent and output. There is a myriad of ways the AFL can [censored] clubs that are successful. Lets say the top 2 can't get in top talent without at least paying some sort of penalty . So for Geelong they can get Cameron but they have to pay overs in their salary cap. ie 10% so if they pick up Cameron and pay him $700,000 a year then given they are a top team their salary cap reflects a yearly cost of $770,000. Or the opposite. If a bottom club persuades Cameron to come and play for them and has to pay him $1,000,000 a year they get a reduction of 10% only reflecting a payment of $900,000 in their salary cap. I believe the draft should be much further skewed towards the bottom teams. The top teams have great players who are very handy at developing talent both on field and as future father/sons, so arguably they don't need the ready made players. Imagine if Geelong had our recruits Jackson, Kossie and Rivers. They would be future champions of the game. It is certainly no guarantee of that happening at Melbourne. So the top two teams should be locked out of the first round and their first pick should maybe be around pick 27 or so. The bottom team might already be getting 2 picks say 1 and 16 before some of the top teams have even had a pick. This at least gives the supporters of lowly clubs some hope, as we know. But if Geelong win the premiership and then on top of that have the best off season recruiting as well I can only suggest the system even with its equalisation triggers in place, hasn't gone far enough. They can paint it any way they like, but thinking about supporters of these two teams sitting around gorging on another feast of wins and silverware, well fair dinkum, it's just not sport. Boring!

  32. A proven quality wingman from a successful club on I suggest a moderate wage but longer than preferred contract at no draft or player cost. To fill a significant gap in our list for year one, year two whilst unknown options compete for the position and I suggest develop our youth at Casey our provides good depth in year 3. This or a 2 year deal that he doesn’t take with us banking on Baker becoming an ok wingman in 2021 or us trading for a suitable player (cant think of any other OOC or FA) at a a higher cost.

  33. All this talk about not being able to fit Weeds, Brown, LJ and Fritsch into our side works in our favour. Lets face it Blokes have been gifted games for far too long on average form. Let them fight for a spot in the side for a change and see who wants it more. The actual bloke most under pressure from all this would be Melksham!! Hnmm fight for a spot, immediately makes us better , much much better!!

  34. Still not sure why Green is on the board. Does he have business accumen? Has he worked in management? What exactly does the board role of 'football' mean? Needs to be explained what skills he brings to the board outside of being an ex MFC player and assistant coach, which are FD roles Not sure being an assistant coach cuts it as experience for a board position. Or perhaps he is there to work on our forwards set shot routines at training Loved him as a player and captain, just unsure of what he brings to the board

  41. Surprised some are so against this decision. Green aside, surely it's a good move to have a former footballer on the board of a football club? Will only help to facilitate the connect between the board and the footy department and help to give the board even more clarity around how their decisions effect the playing group and coaches.

  42. That was my wording based on what was implied in the press release. May have misinterpreted it. An earlier report suggests it would be as 'Director of Football'. Other clubs that have a similar role are: North (Archer), Carlton (Judd), GWS (Bartell) and their may be others. From what I can tell about their roles they generally work with the GM Football on stuff.

  44. I think we have to be in the ball park salary wise. We’re a good option from a footy perspective especially compared to the bombers and Freo but he has a wife and family and it’s a short career. IF we’re competitive with our offer then he should come to us. If his decision is solely based on money then we’re better off without him. I really hope that’s not the case because imv he could make a huge difference for us.

  48. With GWS losing a large amount of players this offseason, we may be able to use this to our advantage to trade up in the draft. GWS will look to receive Pick 9 for Williams (1st round compensation) Possibly pick 11 and 13 for Cameron (forced trade with Geelong with 2 X first rounders likely) Pick 28 for Corr (2nd round compensation) Caldwell and Hately are both former first round draft picks and would likely command at least a 2nd round pick each. Langdon won't be a throw away pick either. Some of these trades may involve players or future picks which makes things interesting. Given how this draft is shaping as one of the most compromised in history, and with GWS perhaps feeling burnt by young kids leaving so soon into their careers, it may make sense for them to invest these picks into a mix of established best 22 players and draftees. With some mooted interest in McDonald and established intention to recruit Preuss, this could present as a significant chance to move up into the first round rather than accumulate token picks in the 30's/40's.

  49. In that article it says we offered a two year deal but the Dogs trumped us with a three year deal. Feels like the Dean Kent trade from a few years ago. I'm happy that we didn't offer three years as I don't believe his last few seasons warranted such an offer.

  50. 2 years ago we beat this team in a final with all bar the highlighted players playing in the GF. They have been replaced with Dahlaus, Rohan, Miers, Simpson and Stanley. We have the foundations, sure we need to alter a few things, have a bit of luck, players to prove but things can change quickly.
